August 10, 2022 — Monthly Meeting
9:30am - Curtiss Hall Banquet Rooms
Bottled Goodbyes
Presented by Ric Mixter
Bottled messages have been discovered on shore nearly as long as glass containers have been invented. They bring tidings from ocean voyagers, invitations for penpals, tragic attempts for rescue and floating farewells from long lost souls. Based on Ric Mixter’s new book, Bottled Goodbyes, which chronicles the most famous messages ever recovered, including three bottles found after the Titanic disaster. One of those messages was allegedly from a White House aide who served two U.S. presidents. Ric also investigated five messages that floated ashore from the Great Storm of 1913 and shares in-depth information on the barge Plymouth and Lightship 82 notes. Both ships, including the entire crews, were lost; so, the messages recovered made national headlines. Of particular interest are the near crashes of balloonist Washington Donaldson in lakes Ontario and Michigan and the final flight that took his life off the Michigan coast in 1875. Ric also investigates the development of radio on the Great Lakes and how that led to a decrease in bottles recovered. Ric Mixter will give another exciting lecture; look for his course in the class listings:

(48) The Soo Locks
Participants will get a chance at an insider’s view of what goes on year-round at the world famous, engineering marvel, Soo Locks. Michelle Briggs, chief park ranger at the Soo Locks, will use photos to illustrate virtually how the locks operate, the work that goes into keeping them working and the massive ships that rely on their operation. After a chance to ask questions and learn more about the locks, participants will enjoy lunch at Goetz’s Lockview Restaurant before loading a boat to see the Locks up close. Following this floating tour, participants will visit Sault Ste. Marie’s historic Museum Ship—Valley Camp. This ship was built in Lorain, Ohio for the Producers Steamship Company and originally was named Louis W. Hill in 1917. Just a little later it was under new ownership and renamed Valley Camp in honor of the Valley Camp Coal Company. Valley Camp offers more than just a tour of her deck. Her massive cargo holds a 20,000 square foot museum with over 100 exhibits! In addition to the museum exhibits, Valley Camp displays four 1,200-gallon aquariums stocked with various species of fish from the Great Lakes region. Before heading home, we’ll stop at Antler’s Restaurant for a hand-dipped ice cream cone. This trip package includes motorcoach transportation to Sault Ste. Marie, lunch at Goetz’s Lockview Restaurant, floating tour of the Soo Locks, entrance to the Museum Ship—Valley Camp, and ice cream at Antler’s Restaurant.

(49) Buried in Detroit: The Historic Cemetery Tour
From our French founding in 1701 through British rule, from America’s fight for independence through the great boom of post-Civil War era, and the ups, downs, and all around of this last century, Detroit has filled its cemeteries with the industrial tycoons, labor leaders, political powerhouses, and entertainment legends who built the town. Join Detroit History Tours as we explore the city’s historic cemeteries in a respectful, historical, adventure into our past. You’ll walk the quiet paths and tree canopied hallows of Detroit’s world of the dead. With over thirty cemeteries in Detroit, Highland Park, and Hamtramck, we’ll hop aboard our luxury motor coach to traverse the tombstones, mausoleums, grottos, memorials, and one of our most famous spots worldwide— Woodlawn Cemetery. Along our travels you may encounter the final resting place of sports stars, music icons, brilliant inventors, captains of industry, and the soldiers, sailors, and airmen who faithfully served our country. All the while, you will explore the architecture, design, landscape choices, and history of the cemetery. As a special treat for our SVSU VIP’s we will visit the iconic Whitney Restaurant, the former mansion of David Whitney Jr. located on Woodward Ave. You’ll arrive to be greeted with coffee, cookies, and a private ghost tour of the house turned restaurant. Ability to walk up to two miles on uneven terrain (many stairs) and stand for extended periods of time required for this trip. Comfortable shoes recommended. This trip package includes a guided tour of Detroit’s Woodlawn Cemetery, a box lunch from Milano Bakery, and The Whitney ghost tour with refreshments.

A Note From Advisory Board Chair Roger Spann
| |
Alexander Graham Bell once said: "When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us. As I pondered on those words, I had to ask myself if Mr. Bell could see into the future and realized that many of us would be doing that exact same thing in the year 2022. During the past three years many doors have closed for all of us in every aspect of life. We can choose to continue to look at just those closed doors and miss all the wonderful new doors that have opened and continue to open for us. This is so true of our SVSU-OLLI program. Yes, many things have changed over the past years, but we have the opportunity today to look at all the new doors that we can go through as we look forward to a fantastic fall and new year with OLLI. It will be different. But let’s vow to walk through the new doors to a fantastic time as we go forth with all the wonderful new experiences that await all of us. A great beginning will be to make sure you have renewed or opened your new membership. All memberships expire August 31. Be sure your membership is active September 1 so you can participate in all that is going to be offered for you as we go through the new doors that are opening for us. Join us September 14 for our fall kick off monthly membership meeting. Look through the fall catalog and select your adventures for the next few months. Don't let the doors that have closed behind us stop you from the best season ever. And here we go!
