OVERHEARD AT OLLI
students practice tai chi with Lenora Wong who is on the right
Lenora Wong, pictured, right, says, "I keep returning to OLLI because of the family-like connection we make in class. When I miss a day, I don't feel right. The loose, flexible structure of OLLI enables me to do what I love, with friends, and without the hassle of taking roll or posting grades."

Lenora started practicing tai chi more than 40 years ago, but didn't become fully devoted to a daily practice until losing her home in the Camp Fire. She loves meeting people who really enjoy learning, and she pledges to continue teaching tai chi to anyone who is interested, regardless of their experience level. Lenora will lead two tai chi classes for OLLI this fall - for beginning and intermediate students - Tuesday and Friday mornings at the Center for Spiritual Living in Chico.

Image of COVID from the CDC
COVID-19 continues to be an evolving situation, and OLLI continues to follow Chico State policies. We will keep you updated as changes occur. Here is our current policy:

  • Proof of vaccination is required for all in-person classes. Register your vaccine here.
  • Masks are strongly recommended in inside classrooms. Masks are always welcome.
  • There are HEPA air purifiers in all four of our main classrooms at The Social Chico.
  • If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or any other communicable illnesses, such as a cold or the flu, please stay home.
ARTS OF ISLAM
image of Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque showing a building with a blue entryway framed by beige stone and and a large dome rising above it
The Arts of Islam introduces the architecture and arts of the western Islamic world dating from the seventh through the seventeenth centuries. We invite you to join retired art history professor Katherine Harper this fall for a ten-week online journey through ten centuries of Islamic art.

Katherine says, "I have from a very young age been mesmerized by the arts of Islam. The various art forms represent a synthesis of multiple antique artistic traditions, both western and eastern, that merge and re-form into extraordinarily powerful lyrical visual creations. Whether architecture, calligraphy, painting, pottery, metal wares, or fabric decoration, the colorful rhythmic patterns result in an arresting beauty. Even more so, there is in Islam's architecture and arts an overriding sense order that suggests a profound higher spiritual wisdom."

Join OLLI now and register for Arts of Islam when registration opens on August 25.
ART SHOW OPENING

In 2017, former "Poetry for Pleasure" instructor Jim Kirks (1938-2021) made a
donation to launch the OLLI Art Gallery in the Bradley 2 classroom at The
Social Chico. Jim wanted to see a space held for the perpetual celebration of the many talented artists in OLLI. Jim was honored with flowers and a plaque at the very first gallery opening and attended several thereafter.

Following a two-year break due to COVID, we are delighted to resume
exhibitions in Bradley 2, starting with Classroom to Gallery: OLLI Artists
2021-22, a showcase of OLLI student works from Fall '21 and Spring '22 art classes. We hope you will join us for the Gallery Reception on Sunday, August 21, 4-6pm, in Bradley 2. Proof of vaccination is required to attend. Register your vaccine here.

This special event is made possible by OLLI art instructor and volunteer Debbie Vermette. Debbie and a small team of volunteers, including Jerry and Carla Dunham, Myron Flindt, Margaret Rader, and OLLI instructors Cris Guenter, Marvey Mueller, and Susan Levine, have been planning the show for several months. These instructors, along with Janet Lombardi Blixt, are busy gathering artwork from their students.
AUGUST IS FAT LIBERATION MONTH
two smiling women photo by Michael Poley for AllGo
The National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA) is celebrating Fat Liberation Month all through August to show the world how fat people are thriving despite society’s biases and prejudices.

Here are just a few ways to celebrate Fat Liberation Month and learn more about fat people's lives, anti-fat bias, and fat justice:
  • Attend one of NAAFA's Fat Liberation Month events. NAAFA's calendar includes videos about fat history, a creepy-campy fat drag show, a recorded lecture from an attorney about fat justice, and many more educational and celebratory events.
  • Listen to - or read a transcript of - Maintenance Phase, a podcast that debunks and decodes wellness and weight loss topics of all kinds. From taste testing celery juice to diving into the science and history of calories, hosts Aubrey Gordon and Michael Hobbes take on weight, nutrition, and wellness science with a combination of facts and humor.
  • Read a book about fat justice, such as Fearing the Black Body: The Racial Origins of Fat Phobia by Sabrina Strings, What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Fat by Aubrey Gordon, or Fat Activism: A Radical Social Movement by Charlotte Cooper.
  • Watch a TV show or movie made by fat writers and actors, such as Shrill, Dumplin', or Dietland.
  • Search for #FatLiberationMonth on your favorite social media site and check out other what other people are doing to celebrate!
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Volunteer Printed on a Red Shirt
Looking for a way to support your OLLI program and stay connected to others? OLLI member Paul Coots is the schedule coordinator for the OLLI satellite office, The OLLI Annex. The Annex is located next to the Bradley 2 classroom at The Social Chico, where the majority of our in-person classes are held. Volunteers help answer members' questions, typically related to class dates, times, and locations, and general issues such as where to park.

If you are already attending classes at The Social Chico and would consider extending your day there by another hour or two, we could really use your support. We have many returning volunteers, and are looking for a couple more. We have two slots open: Tuesday mornings 9:15-11:15 and Thursday afternoons 12:15-2:15. Please contact Paul at cootspaul@gmail.com with "OLLI Office" in the subject line if you're interested, and include the days and times you are available. Thank you!
IN REMEMBRANCE
Elizabeth Bernstein died July 10, 2022. She was 93. Fellow OLLI member Susan Levine remembers her warmly. "She was an intelligent woman you could always recognize by her lovely accent. She was an active participant of the writer's group for many years and endeared herself to other members. Her insight is missed."
