On Tuesday, CSUC faculty member Gail Walton led the first of a four-part series on the development of gender and sexuality. The class, which also included OLLI members from the University of Arizona, is designed for people seeking a broader and deeper understanding of children's gender and sexuality development.
One attendee shared, "These issues are very important to my grandchild, and I've been looking for ways to participate in conversations with them about the 'gender spectrum.' The problem was, I didn't know what that meant! This first class has already helped me better understand the issues, as well as where to find helpful resources." The class meets three more Tuesdays, 10am-12pm, on Zoom. Click here to register.

YEAR-END PARK POTLUCK IS A HIT!
|
|
OLLI's "Better Together" theme was realized in a recent outdoor meetup at Wildwood Park. Thirty members brought food and good cheer, with personal spray bottles and chilled drinks taking the the edge off a hot May afternoon.
"I have been looking forward to reconnecting with people after two years of isolation," said Robin Dizard, pictured next to her homemade Tyropitakia. "The OLLI picnic invitation immediately caught my eye, and I'm having the best time!" Sharing food, swapping pandemic survival stories, and two raucous games of Bingo were highlights from the outing. OLLI student Melissa Friefeld planned the outing and tagged it "Better Together." Her tagline continues to inspire us and will show up more frequently as part of our commitment to inclusion and belonging. Information about the next picnic will be coming soon!

Chico Art Center is offering artists a "second chance" to show their work, given the dampening effect of COVID-19 on many studios last fall.
Local art historian and prolific artist Dolores Mitchell, who is offering an OLLI class on Claude Monet in the fall, is one of the artists featured in the Open Studio in the Garden on Saturday, June 11, 12-5pm. The event will take place at 373 E. 4th Avenue in Chico.

ANNUAL BUSINESS & TOWN HALL MEETING
|
|
Perhaps not as much fun as the OLLI picnic, the Annual Business & Town Hall Meeting is a great time to learn more about how OLLI operates. Did you know, for example, that membership fees cover just 61% of OLLI expenses? Do you know that actual cost per member for running OLLI is $350? Are you aware that OLLI volunteers alone have provided more than 2,500 service hours so far this year? Knowing where we're going, and gaining member input along the way, helps ensure OLLI can deliver the type of stimulating programming that keeps you coming back. We look forward to sharing our plans with you, and we're especially eager to hear your thoughts and wishes.

In History and Function of the Ford Model A Car, the 25+ members enrolled were treated to this 1916 Ford Model T, the precursor of the Model A. In week 4, members will get to ride in at least one of the models on display. It's not too late to join us this summer!

NOTICE ANYTHING DIFFERENT?
|
|
For those taking online classes this summer, you may have noticed something a little different about how to access live-online Zoom links and class recordings. Starting June 1, OLLI members receive links for live-online classes via email, prior to the start of each class. A link for class recordings is also emailed directly to class participants. In addition to saving members the extra steps involved in retrieving Zoom links themselves, office staff no longer has to build the weekly Zoom calendars.
"Learning the nuances of the new registration system has been a goal of ours from the start," explained OLLI Operations Coordinator Michele Desmond. "It's a robust system, with lots of good features, but the learning curve is steep." Michele gives credit for automating link emails to Ruth Alderson, OLLI's new program manager. "Ruth is determined to help us streamline administrative processes by more fully using the technology available to us," Michele said.
Ruth is also using her background in advertising to help OLLI navigate copyright restrictions. Notices on these automated emails requesting that links not be shared are a result of stricter enforcement of copyright rules. We are also following through on requests from some instructors to keep their recordings private. "At the start of the pandemic, it was something of a free-for-all," explained Ann Nikolai, program director. "We were basically allowed, even encouraged, to do what ever had to be done to deliver content."
Over the next few months, OLLI will be developing and implementing a copyright policy to better reflect the expectations of the times we are now living in. We will also be providing more tools and resources to help instructors comply, including training and access to resources, like Creative Commons. Creative Commons is a non-profit organization and network devoted to expanding the range of creative works available for others to build upon legally and to share. Working together to become savvier about images and videos we are showing in class will make us better digital citizens and freer to, once again, share more widely.
