FALL BREAK IS OCTOBER 17-28
|
|
Learning never retires – but sometimes it hits pause. There will be no classes during the fall break, October 17-28. OLLI staff and volunteers will use this time to build the new spring schedule and catch up on other administrative tasks.
This will, however, be the last two-week break of its kind. Beginning in spring, OLLI will return to the traditional one-week, mid-term break, with plans to eliminate mid-term breaks all together starting next fall. Learn more about plans to expand learning time at the OLLI Town Hall meeting later this month.
Keep up with holidays and other important dates on the OLLI Calendar or at the end of this email.

INTERNATIONAL PRONOUN DAY IS OCTOBER 19
|
|
International Pronouns Day seeks to make respecting, sharing, and educating about personal pronouns commonplace.
We often think we can determine a person’s gender, and therefore what pronouns to use for them, based on their name or appearance. But human beings are so much more varied and complex than that! Many people have names that can be used for people of more than one gender. And they may dress in ways that aren’t traditionally associated with their gender. Even when our guesses are correct, the fact that we guess means we’re assigning a category to someone without letting them tell us who they are.
Being referred to by the wrong pronouns particularly affects transgender and gender nonconforming people. Every time someone uses the wrong pronouns for a transgender, nonbinary, or intersex person, it reinforces the idea that they are not welcome in the world unless they hide the fullness of who they are.
Learn more about pronouns – what they are, how to use them, and how to communicate them – at Pronouns.org. If you feel comfortable sharing your pronouns, consider putting them in your display name on Zoom or in your email signature. Starting in Spring ’23, OLLI will offer instructors the option to list their pronouns in the catalog and on the website.
Want to learn more? Watch Chico State faculty member Gail Walton's four-part series Development of Gender and Sexuality. These recordings are from the summer class she led for OLLI in June.

Local artist and Chico State Professor Emerita Dolores Mitchell knows all about art and artists. "Watching Dolores talk about Monet's life, work, and contemporaries is a quality art class," said Brenda Crotts, OLLI member and retired librarian. "She speaks with knowledge and passion about Monet and his journey in art. We also learn history, culture, and artists of the era. It's an amazing art history and appreciation experience."
In her five-week fall course, "Claude Monet: Observation and Calculated Design," Dolores focused on the artist's color choices at specific times of the day. She has led OLLI classes about the impressionists and the golden age of seventeenth-century Dutch Art, among many others. Dolores will be leading a new OLLI class in the spring called "Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, Symbolism, and Related Movements."

Stay Connected to the Local Art Scene with Dolores Mitchell
For a decade, Dolores Mitchell and Maria Phillips, artists, art historians, and founders of Avenue 9 Gallery, collaborated on publicity for the gallery's lectures and exhibitions. In 2015, after Phillips' death and closure of Avenue 9, Dolores began sending a monthly email on local creativity to the Avenue 9 mailing list. Since then, "Art Talk" subscriptions have grown from 600 to 2,000. Her goal for "Art Talk" is to nourish feelings of community between artists, art organizations, and art lovers. Subscribe to stay connected to our arts community!
