OLLI members joined OLLI staff at a town hall-style conversation about proposed changes to OLLI's fee and term structures. Our goal is to make OLLI enjoyable, affordable, and sustainable, with more than one option for members to choose.

Your feedback over the past few years has helped position us to make constructive changes. Now we'd like to show you how our response is taking shape.

Watch the recording, view the handout, and find out what we had to share.
DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS NOVEMBER 1-2

Día de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday where families welcome back the souls of – and celebrate – their deceased family members. One Día de los Muertos tradition is the creation of ofrendas, or altars, dedicated to the deceased and filled with the deceased’s favorite foods, candles, and cempasúchil, the Aztec name of the marigold native to Mexico. Día de los Muertos is also a time to visit loved ones’ graves. Día de los Muertos is a day for celebrating the dead, and many of its traditions are joyful: telling stories about the deceased, eating festive meals together, and enjoying music and dancing.

Register now to join OLLI and Chico Performances for a special lecture about Día de los Muertos on Tuesday, November 8 and get 20% off two tickets to Las Cafeteras presents Hasta La Muerte, A Day of the Dead Celebration, with special guest Lupita Infante at Laxson Auditorium on November 9.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
Being prepared can reduce fear, anxiety, and losses that accompany disasters. In Emergency Preparedness, OLLI instructor Richard Utter, pictured, will draw on his experience and expertise in the public and private sectors to help OLLI members review their own personal situations, then take steps to improve their resiliency and responsiveness to whatever comes their way.

“Unexpected things will happen,” said Richard in a recent conversation with OLLI Director Ann Nikolai. “There are things we can do to be better prepared and more resilient when they do happen.” It’s not too late to enroll – Emergency Preparedness starts next week. Expand your emergency preparedness toolkit this fall!
OVERHEARD AT OLLI

My Neighbor’s Voice (MNV) is committed to encouraging respectful conversations about the things that matter most. Using MNV Listening Cards and a moderated format, instructors Mary Anne Inglis and Victoria Chance, pictured, provide a safe and hospitable space in which everyone is invited to share their personal stories, thoughts, and opinions about how to best live together.

OLLI member Kendall Moalem came away from the class deeply valuing its place in the OLLI schedule. “Just wanted to let you know how wonderful this class is! I was touched by the process, and the initiative as a whole as I learned more about it: its roots, inception, non-profit status, and how they're 'deploying' it. I found myself both doing internal exploration and feeling connected to the participants. So valuable!”

If you missed “My Neighbor's Voice: Building Community Through Deep Listening” this time around, you’ll have another chance to join them in the spring term.
NOVEMBER IS NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH
Native American Heritage Month celebrates the culture, heritage, and current lives of Native Americans and Alaska Natives. One way to learn about a variety of Native people and cultures is to visit PBS’s 30 Stories for 30 Days of Native American and Alaska Native Heritage Month celebration that highlighted Native individuals and groups carrying on Indigenous traditions in the modern world.
For information about the land we live on here In Chico, visit the Mechoopda Indian Tribe of Chico Rancheria’s history.

In partnership with the Mechoopda, Chico State offers a formal land acknowledgment on its website and in other publications:

We acknowledge and are mindful that Chico State stands on lands that were originally occupied by the first people of this area, the Mechoopda, and we recognize their distinctive spiritual relationship with this land, the flora, the fauna, and the waters that run through campus.

We are humbled that our campus resides upon sacred lands that since time immemorial have sustained the Mechoopda people and continue to do so today.
ELECTION DAY IS NOVEMBER 8
A roll of I Voted stickers next to a sign that says Voting Day
Election Day is right around the corner, on Tuesday, November 8. Voting is an important way to participate in the democratic process.

California sends vote-by-mail ballots to every registered voter. Butte County ballots were mailed on October 10. You can find more information about where to drop off your ballot, how to get a replacement ballot, and where to visit voter assistance centers at the Butte County elections website.

The League of Women Voters of Butte County’s website has nonpartisan voting information about what’s on the ballot, and you can watch recordings of their local candidate forums.

And while you’re there, check out the recording of Homing in on Homelessness: Part 2, the second in a three-part series on homelessness in Butte County.
VOICES OF THE GOLDEN GHOSTS
Voices of the Golden Ghosts, the performance collective from Shasta and Siskiyou Counties will perform historical vignettes based on the experiences of African Americans in the California Gold Rush. Creator Mark Oliver says, "By 1852, over 2,000 men of African American descent were in the California goldfields. However, today little is ever mentioned about the free and enslaved Black men who lived in the northern California wilderness by pick and shovel."

The performance will be followed by a presentation of the collective's new book and a Q&A with the actors and authors. Find out more on the monca website.
