MEMBER BENEFIT: LUNCH AT THE SOCIAL

The Social cafeteria

OLLI members get a special discounted lunch price at The Social Chico's main cafeteria when you buy a 10-meal card from the cashier for $87.40. Single meals for everyone, including OLLI members, are $14.96.

The cafeteria is located in the central building at The Social Chico, near the main lobby. To get there from OLLI classrooms, you'll enter the back of the building near the pool. You can refer to the pdf map of The Social to help you find it..

The OLLI lunch hour, 11:30am-12:30pm, Monday-Friday is a great opportunity to spend time with other members and get something to eat between classes without having to go anywhere. And these prices still beat most downtown eateries!

Debit/credit cards only. The Social Chico cannot accept cash.

NO CLASSES SEPTEMBER 21 FOR YOM KIPPUR

Apples honey and a shofar

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, together known as the High Holidays, are the two most important holidays in Judaism. This year, the High Holidays begin at sundown on September 11 and end at sundown on September 21.

Rosh Hashanah marks the Jewish new year. Many people eat apples with honey and round challah with raisins or honey to symbolize a sweet new year. Yom Kippur ten days later is also known as the Day of Atonement. It is a more solemn holiday marked with fasting and communal prayer services. Both holidays, along with the month of Elul before them, include blowing the shofar.

OLLI does not hold classes on Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur so our Jewish members do not have to choose between their OLLI classes and their most important religious holidays. There will be no classes on Monday, September 21 in observance of Yom Kippur; Rosh Hashanah is on a Saturday this year.

OLLI SPONSORS BRING REAL-WORLD KNOWLEDGE TO CLASS

Steve Cliadakis

Steve and Miste Cliadakis have been active OLLI members for over a decade. They've also been active sponsors through their firm, Altum Wealth Advisors. Altum was OLLI's very first business sponsor – and was voted Best Financial Planner in last year's Best of Chico contest.

In addition to supporting OLLI financially, Steve and Miste bring their real-world expertise as professional financial advisors to the OLLI classroom. This month, they're both teaching in-person OLLI classes.

Steve's class, Navigating Retirement Investing in a Changing Economic Landscape, explores how shifts in inflation, interest rates, fiscal policy, and geopolitical tensions can affect portfolios. Steve will review various investment options, such as CDs, Treasurys, index funds, ETFs, and others, so you can learn how to allocate them within diversified portfolios. His class includes insights from leading economists and key principles of portfolio construction and risk management, providing practical guidance to help align investments with personal retirement goals.

Miste Cliadakis

Miste's class, Women & Money: Pause Before You Pay to Spot Scams Early, is an informative and supportive class specifically for women. In the class, Miste will help women recognize and avoid common scams. She'll bring up-to-date information on current scams including artificial intelligence (AI) scams, how to recognize them, and steps to take to feel safer.

Steve and Miste's support helps OLLI stay financially strong, and their classes help OLLI members be informed and knowledgeable about the latest in financial trends.

VOLUNTEER AT THE OLLI ANNEX

Margaret Rader and Nancy McCartney at the OLLI Annex

Join in on a fun opportunity to meet some new friends while supporting OLLI. Paul Coots is actively recruiting volunteers to help staff the Annex Office. The Annex Office is located next to Bradley 2 classroom at The Social Chico, where the majority of in-person classes are held.

Volunteers help answer members' questions, typically related to class dates, times, and locations, as well as where to park. If you are already attending a class at The Social please consider extending your day there by arriving 30 minutes early. We could really use your support and will provide the little bit of training needed before you start. We have returning volunteers, but we are looking for more.

Please contact Paul at cootspaul@gmail.com with "OLLI Office" in the subject line if you are interested. Thank you!

OVERHEARD AT OLLI

Two of Jessica Beattie's acrylic paintings hanging in the OLLI Art Gallery

Among the artists in the OLLI Art Gallery fall Treasures of Northern California exhibit is OLLI member Jessica Beattie, who contributed two acrylic paintings, Lavender Field and Mountain Creek, that were created in Christine McShane's "Acrylic Painting: Beginning" class. Jessica credits several OLLI instructors with helping her grow as an artist.

"I started taking classes with Cris Guenter to learn the basics. Christine McShane has really helped me with learning acrylics. Two of the pieces I have in the gallery I created in her class. Marvey Mueller has really helped me with watercolor. Every one of them has contributed to my growth as an artist and they are all great instructors."

For Jessica, the encouragement she found in OLLI helped make art feel accessible. "I was a beginner, and I want people to know that if you are intimidated to start making art, in OLLI classes you can be a beginner and create things that you’re proud of."

MEET A MEMBER: MARGARET RADER

Margaret Rader

You might encounter Margaret Rader, pictured, at any number of locations. At the Annex in The Social's Bradley 2 lobby, helping OLLI members find their way to a new class. At a farmers' market or an OLLI Class Preview, recruiting new members. Perhaps greeting you as she acts as host for an in-person class.

"I love to tell people how wonderful OLLI is!" she explains. In almost two decades with OLLI, she's taken classes in a myriad of subjects – geology, physics, classic films, and birding among them. Her front garden, planted with advice from OLLI members who are Master Gardeners, is a drought-tolerant haven for birds and pollinators.

She used to grow veggies in her backyard, in planters built by one of her sons. But with so many local sources for fresh vegetables, her back garden is given over to mature trees and flowers that attract a variety of birds to watch, which "is great fun."

An active member of the OLLI Art Gallery Team, Margaret helps organize periodic exhibits of artwork by OLLI members at The Social. She's enjoyed participating in "Arts & Eats" and this fall is planning on learning about the vestibular system and the power of words.

Margaret is making the most of her OLLI experience, happy to participate in OLLI's "great community!"

HIV/AIDS & AGING AWARENESS DAY IS SEPTEMBER 18

National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day logo

September 18 is National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day. In California, 45.5% of people with HIV are 55 and older. Improved treatments mean that people with HIV can live longer, and older adults can contract HIV or receive a new diagnosis.

Health care professionals are less likely to ask older adults about sexual activity and intravenous drug use than they are to have those conversations with younger people. Older adults are also less likely than other age groups to have ever been tested for HIV.

You can find information about local testing sites from the Butte County Public Health Department. The only way to know your HIV status is to get tested. Knowing your status is information you can use to keep yourself and any partners you may have healthy.
