February is National Snack Food Month!
|
Yay for snacks! They can satisfy cravings, help you watch your weight, boost your metabolism, and even help you deal with sadness. Whatever your mood, there is a snack for you. So, let’s take advantage of National Snack Month in February. Hoard your favorite snacks and munch away. Snacking doesn’t always have to be unhealthy. In fact, it can be a great way to eat more proteins, fiber, and fruits — thereby helping your body stay in shape. Happy snacking!

1941
Candy goes to war
Hershey's invented M&M's so that it could send some heat-resistant chocolates to soldiers in World War II.
1930
The accidental cookie
When Ruth Graves, a restaurant owner in Massachusetts, added pieces of chocolates to her cookie mix, hoping they would melt, little did she know that her failed experiment would produce the world's most- loved cookie!
1880
Candy goes corny
The Wunderlee Candy Company produced candy corn . It is interesting to remember that in those days candies were made by hand.
50,000 BC
Ancient trail mix
Evidence of wild date seeds, pine nuts, walnuts, acorns, and chestnuts can be found in the Shanidar Cave located in Northern Iraq. Cave dwellers loved to snack too!

A Note from OLLI Advisory Board Chair Roger Spann
|
|
To those OLLI members and friends who love the winter snows and below zero temps, this is your time of the year. To those who enjoy the warmth of the summertime sun, spring and summer are on their way and happiness will be yours. If you were able to attend the January monthly meeting you were able to participate in our health and wellness fair. Our vendors, along with a large number of SVSU health and medical students, shared with us many ideas to help keep our bodies and minds in great shape, even through these difficult times. I picked up many of the flyers that were available to us. If you know me, you know that I love being a happy person and love being around those that are happy in what they do. One of the flyers I brought home with me was titled "Things Happy People Do Differently." As I read it over I did a self-evaluation to see if I actually do things differently to stay happy. Let me share with you just a few of the ideas that were included.
1. Express Gratitude
2. Cultivate optimism
3. Avoid over-thinking and social comparison
4. Practice acts of kindness
5. Nurture social relationships
6. Develop strategies for coping
7. Learn to forgive
8. Savor life's joys
9. Commit to your goals
10.Take care of your body
Let me add one more suggestion to this list provided by Child and Family Services of Saginaw. 11. Participate in as many OLLI activities as possible. In talking with many of our members, the one comment that is repeated over and over is how much happiness OLLI brings to our 50 and better group. Whether it be a monthly meeting, a special class, one of our many day trips or local activities, or participating with an interest group, OLLI provides a wealth of ways to maintain our happiness. Join us in the days ahead and share your happiness with others.
