Our travel providers for each of these travel previews will join us in a Zoom session to discuss the itinerary and travel logistics for each of these destinations. We will meet in a seminar room next to the OLLI office for each session.

Stop by the OLLI office, 2nd floor Curtiss Hall, C 201 during regular business hours - 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with your completed registration form.

Complete the registration form and mail it to the address on the form. Mail-in registrations will be processed AFTER registration opens on an as-possible basis.
*Because we value your membership and support of OLLI, due to the current situation of COVID in our region, we will handle requests for motorchach day trip cancellations on a case by case basis for the winter session.

In Honor of MLK Day, here are some fascinating facts about the
“I Have A Dream” speech and march.
The speech was delivered to an estimated 250,000 people who came to Washington, D.C., on August 28, 1963 to march for civil rights.
· The official event was called the “March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.” On June 11, 1963, President John F. Kennedy made a nationally televised address calling for a drive for more civil rights.
· The March was not universally supported by activists. Prominent objectors included Malcolm X and Strom Thurmond. The organizers didn’t agree on all the issues, either, but they did agree that blacks and whites should march together at the event.
· Almost no one could clearly hear Dr. King’s speech. An expensive sound system was installed for the event, but it was sabotaged right before it. Attorney General Robert Kennedy enlisted the Army Corps of Engineers to fix the system.
· Dr. King almost didn’t give the “I Have a Dream” part of the speech. Singer Mahalia Jackson urged Dr. King to tell the audience “about the dream,” and Dr. King went into an improvised section of the speech.
· The person who wound up with the typewritten speech given by Dr. King is retired college basketball coach George Raveling. A college basketball player at Villanova, organizers saw Raveling in the crowd and asked him to be a bodyguard on stage. He stood next to Dr. King on stage and decided to ask him for the paper copy of the speech. Dr. King obliged and Raveling has the speech locked away in a safe place, with no intention of selling it.

A well-known religious leader summed up his philosophy of happiness as follows: "Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared." How true that is. One of the best parts of being chair of our OLLI Advisory Board is the number of people that call or email me, or stop and chat with me at one of our monthly meetings, or come up to me out in public and share with me their experiences with OLLI. I hear about all the fun times that our members are having on day trips and local adventures, members share the new and exciting things they have learned in one or more of the many exciting OLLI classes, and now that our special interest groups are reforming, I get to hear about all the exciting things that happen when members with similar interests get together for a wonderful time. Members are also sharing a new excitement as our leadership is developing the OLLI of 2022 and beyond. It is great to hear that so many are being uplifted by the programming that is being offered to the 50 and better age group right here in the Great Lakes Bay Region thanks to our SVSU-OLLI. Will all of you join me in continuing to spread the good news of OLLI to people you meet, especially to those might not know about OLLI. Stress the importance of OLLI membership. Our community can continue to join OLLI and be included in this membership year until August 1, 2022. Keep talking. Keep sharing. Keep showing your excitement with all areas of our programming. Offer your suggestions to our staff. Volunteer to serve on a Board or committee. Attend our monthly meetings. 2022 is here and so is OLLI. Get on board. Your suggestions to make OLLI even better are always welcome. Your happiness with OLLI will never decrease when you share it. The more you share, the more your happiness will be spread.
