Then, cruise southward through the Norwegian fjords by coastal ship for five nights near the top of the world, stopping along the way to explore cities, towns, and villages that dot the shore. Once you disembark your ship, you'll visit Bergen, a maritime city of charming restaurants, gift shops, and museums. Then, wind down your explorations with two nights in Oslo, Norway's capital, a nature-lover's dream of 40 islands and more than 300 lakes. As you travel down the country by ship, train, coach, ferry, and plane, you’ll experience Nordic cultures with enduring ties to nature’s majesty.

A Note From Advisory Board Chair Roger Spann

Some of you know about my love of pigs which began when I trained Wilbur, a pot bellied pig who lived at the Saginaw Children's Zoo, to exercise with me. That was instrumental in my starting a pig collection. Presently there are about 200 pigs throughout my home. Using some thoughts from the book "It's the Little Things," let me share a few things I have learned from my pig friends.

As E.B. White taught us in Charlotte's Web, one should never underestimate the brilliance of a pig. And we humans have a lot to learn from them. In an effort to be our best selves, we often reach so high that we forget to connect with the simple pleasures in life that truly make it worth living. But life on the farm is different. The slower pace, the routine, the fresh air, and the community of creatures big and small offer a perspective shift. From the pigs we can learn that sometimes the littlest moments can harbor the greatest happiness.

What does this all mean to OLLI and all my wonderful OLLI friends and to me? As we begin this new year called 2023, I am going to look for more joy in the simple pleasures of life that truly make it worth living. My pig friends take care of each other, they value a calm, tidy space (despite rumors to the contrary), and they relish the opportunity to learn something new every day. May we, with OLLI's help, strive to meet every opportunity--big and small--with as much wonder, intelligence, and grace as my loveable, wonderful pig friends. Remember, it's the little things that really count. I promise you that SVSU--OLLI is here to help all of us have the best year of our lives in 2023. As we go forth in this new year, please let me know about your special adventures with OLLI that bring you new joy and happiness, big or small, in 2023.
