Enjoy door-to-door shuttle service on class days by parking at one of these two locations:

Shea Stadium, 1523 W Nebraska Ave, Peoria

Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1420 W Moss Ave, Peoria

Beginning at 7:30 a.m. on class days, Peoria Charter buses will transport you from Shea Stadium and OLLI Shuttles will transport you from Westminster Church to the Student Center at Bradley.  Parking attendants will be on-site to assist you.

Wednesday, 4/26 - I Volunteer Day

In honor of National Volunteer Week, help spread awareness by sharing your passion with pride.

On this day, you can pick up a #ivolunteer signboard at the OLLI registration desk, and customize is with what inspires or motivates you, what causes you're most passionate about, or what volunteering means to you.  We'll take a photo of you holding the sign and share it on social media using #ivolunteer.

What's a hashtag, you ask?  A hashtag is a keyword phrase, spelled without spaces, with a pound sign (#) in front of it.  For example, #OLLIatBradley and #RiseOfTheRed are both hashtags.  You can put these hashtags anywhere in your social media posts: in the beginning, at the end, or anywhere in between.  They tie public conversations from all different users into a single stream, which you can find by searching for a hashtag or clicking on one.

The Pianist and the Holocaust

Peoria Public Library North Branch

The Pianist, directed by Roman Polanski and released in 2002, is an adaptation of Wladyslaw Szpilman's memoir of survival in Nazi-occupied Poland during the Holocaust.  Beginning with the German Blitzkrieg against Poland in September 1939, it follows Szpliman as he and his family are confined to the Warsaw Ghetto.  Ultimately, he is the lone survivor, aided by a secret Polish organization dedicated to hiding Jews, and finally by the German army officer Wilm Hosenfeld.  This film was awarded the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, the BAFTA for Best Picture, and three Academy Awards for Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay.  

At its first meeting, the group will watch the film.  During the two sessions that follow, we will discuss David Engel's The Holocaust: The Third Reich and the Jews, available from local or online retailers or libraries.

East Bluff Community Center (Activity Level 2)

Thursday, April 27

8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Based in the former St. Bernard's Catholic School, the East Bluff Community Center has partnered with 25 not-for-profit organizations in just the last two years to provide direct services to hundreds of East Bluff residents.  We'll take a private tour with Molly Bishop, host of the radio show Tales from the Whiskey City, who will give us an overview of the facility and programs, including the history of the building and neighborhood.  Among the services provided are a food pantry, after-school tutoring, athletic programs, computer skill classes, and more.  We will get the opportunity to visit WAZU 90.7 FM, a community-based radio station on the second floor.

Excel Foundry and Machine (Activity Level 4)

On this day, we'll visit Excel Foundry and Machine, the "replacement parts superstore" to the mineral processing and aggregate industries.  We'll discover how this global, full-line crusher replacement parts company provides nearly any part needed to operate crushing or large-scale open-pit mining equipment.  We will also learn about the warehousing and processing center, foundry addition, and corporate office facility, each consisting of several thousand square feet of space.

Dinner and a Movie at Wanee Cinemas: Some Like It Hot

Join us for a day in Kewanee to view a private screening of Some Like It Hot at the recently renovated Wanee Cinemas.  Winner of the 1960 Academy Award for Best Costume Design and nine additional awards, this lighthearted comedy features an all-star cast of Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon.  The story follows two Chicago musicians who, after witnessing the St. Valentine's Day massacre, are looking to get out of town and away from mobster Spats Columbo.  They disguise themselves as Josaphine (Curtis) and Daphne (Lemmon) in order to join an all-girl band heading to Florida, and find that hiding their true identities will be more difficult than they imagined when romance and mobsters in Florida interrupt their plan.  

On our visit, we will learn about the history of the Wanee theater, view the film, enjoy a moderated discussion, and dine at Cerno's Bar and Grill for lunch.  Shuttle transportation is available, or you are welcome to drive yourself to meet us in Kewanee.

International Humanitarian Law: A View of Refugee Rights

The Peoria Area World Affairs Council (PAWAC) and Bradley University's International Affairs Organization and the Institute of International Studies presents "International Humanitarian Law: A View of Refugee Rights" on Thursday, April 13, 2017.  The lecture will begin at 6:00 p.m. in room 126 of the Caterpillar Global Communications Building on the Bradley University campus.

Bradley University students will discuss what countries are obligated to do for refugees under International Humanitarian Law, primarily established by the Geneva Conventions, as well as the stipulations and difficulty of the refugee process.  The information conveyed throughout the presentation will then be applied to the Syrian refugee crisis.  The program is expected to last approximately one hour.  This program is free and open to the pubic.

Cyberwar and the Internet of Things

The Peoria Area World Affairs Council (PAWAC) and Bradley University's Institute of International Studies present "Cyberwar and the Internet of Things" on Thursday, April 20, 2017.  The event will begin at 6:00 p.m. in room 116 of Westlake Hall on the Bradley University campus.

Recent high profile events show how the "connected" devices of our daily lives have become "soldiers" in a cyberwar of espionage and attacks by nations and non-state actors.  The internet is a type of global commons essential for innovation, research, and development.  With this importance, cyberwar and security is rising as one of the most important topics in international affairs.  Security Researcher Cody Kretsinger of CIAN, a leading cyber security firm, will provide background on the latest developments in the cyber security arena and discuss just how easy it is for a hacker to invade the devices that we rely on daily.

Tickets are $10.00 for PAWAC members; $15.00 for the general public.  All students may attend the lecture for free with their student ID.  Tickets can be purchased in advance via the PAWAC website: www.pawac.org. Tickets will also be available at the door as long as the event is not sold out.
