Registration for Summer 2017 Events

Hello, summer!   Hopefully by now you have received your summer brochure and have taken a look at our offerings.  The brochure can also be viewed online by clicking here.

Please take a moment to read about this week's registration, beginning with the Registration Open House on Wednesday, May 3.

Attend the OLLI Registration Open House on Wednesday, May 3, from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. in the Michel Student Center Ballrooms.

Free park-and-ride shuttle service from Westminster Presbyterian Church on Moss Avenue will be provided starting at 8:00 a.m.  Doors will open and numbers for the queue will be handed out at 8:40 a.m.  We highly encourage you not to arrive before 8:15 a.m.

During the Registration Open House, you'll have the chance to interact one-on-one with staff, learn more about OLLI programming, provide ideas for future classes, trips, and study groups, and have the chance to take home brochures to distribute to area businesses.  Most of all, feel free to enjoy snacks and refreshments, and spend some time with your friends (or meet some new ones).  Registration forms received at this event will be processed first.

On Thursday, May 4, starting at 9:00 a.m., mail and telephone registration opens.  Please note: you may mail your form at any time after receiving the brochure (which is also available online).  Forms will be queued in the order received and processed on this date.

A NOTE ABOUT ONLINE REGISTRATION: Continuing Education staff continues to work behind-the-scenes to try and solve the problems with OLLI's online registration system.  We will keep you updated via email and the OLLI website (www.bradley.edu/olli) regarding the availability of online registration.  We appreciate your continued patience and flexibility!

If you would like to speak with a staff member about your registration, please call (309) 677-3900.

Wrapup
Review Spring Classes at Wrap-Up

On Wednesday, May 10, we will meet for our first Curriculum Committee meeting of the season, at which we will review the evaluation results from our recent spring class session.

All are invited to attend!  Even if you just come for the scones and socialization, that's okay too -- although we'll bet you just might enjoy hearing about some of the other amazing classes that went on this spring, too!

We will meet in the Michel Student Center Ballrooms on Wednesday, May 10, at 9:00 a.m.  We hope to see you there!

mugs
Thank You for Your Donated Mugs!

We asked for old mugs to donate to the Cullom-Davis Library, and you delivered!  As finals week approaches, the library provides students with coffee and hot cocoa in donated mugs to fuel their studies.  During OLLI classes, we collected around 100 mugs to give toward this effort!

Thank you to everyone who donated a mug to brighten a student's day!

WOW
Recyclable Items Needed for World of Wonder

** Thank you to everyone who brought in items during classes!  We will update this list each week on the items we are still seeking.  We greatly appreciate your overwhelming assistance in collecting supplies!**

World of Wonder, a summer camp for gifted and talented students run by Continuing Education, needs your recyclable items!  Our teachers are coming up with creative activities to challenge students' higher order thinking processes, and below is a list of recyclable supplies they would love to have.

- Kleenex boxes
- egg cartons
- empty tubes from toilet paper and paper towels
- shoeboxes
- cereal boxes
- rinsed soda cans
- rinsed soup cans
- empty water bottles
- take-out pizza boxes (a little grease is okay)

(We have all the newspaper and plastic grocery bags we need!  Thank you to all who donated!)

If you are able to collect any of the above items, we will take them!  You may bring them to the Continuing Education building (corner of Main and University streets) any time between 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday.

Thank you for supporting World of Wonder 2017!

Join OLLI for Dinner and a Movie

Enjoy a relaxing day in Kewanee with OLLI as we view Some Like It Hot, followed by a discussion and lunch.

Dinner and a Movie at Wanee Cinemas: Some Like It Hot
Monday, May 22
8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Join us for a day in Kewanee to view a private screening of  Some Like It Hot at the recently renovated Wanee Cinemas.  Winner of the 1960 Academy Award for Best Costume Design and nine additional awards, this lighthearted comedy features an all-star cast of Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon.  The story follows two Chicago musicians who, after witnessing the St. Valentine's Day massacre, are looking to get out of town and away from mobster Spats Columbo.  They disguise themselves as Josaphine (Curtis) and Daphne (Lemmon) in order to join an all-girl band heading to Florida, and find that hiding their true identities will be more difficult than they imagined when romance and mobsters in Florida interrupt their plan.

On our visit, we will learn about the history of the Wanee theater, view the film, enjoy a moderated discussion, and dine at Cerno's Bar and Grill for lunch, originally built by Pabst Blue Ribbon in 1898.

Shuttle transportation is available, or you are welcome to drive yourself to meet us in Kewanee.

$55 - includes film screening, moderated discussion, dinner, gratuities, and shuttle transportation if desired.

To register, call Gwen at ( 309) 677-3900.

Enjoy a Lighthearted Film on the Giant Screen

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Tuesday, May 30
10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Peoria Riverfront Museum Giant Screen Theater

In collaboration with the Hult Center for Healthy Living's Encore program, 50 Plus News & Views magazine, and the Fondulac Park District, OLLI will host a special presentation of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers on the 7-story Giant Screen Theater in the Peoria Riverfront Museum.  The 1954 comedic musical follows the playful story of a backwoodsman who brings his new wife back to his Oregon cabin, where she is surprised to fins his six brothers who want to get married, too.  Nominated for Best Pictures in 1954, it is known for its outstanding dance sequences.

Following the film, we will reflect on the choreography and theatrical quality of the musical in a moderated discussion with Robin Hunt, member of the EastLight Theatre group.

$5 - includes film screening and moderated discussion.  Transportation is not provided; meet us at the museum!

Call us today to reserve your seat in advance! (309) 677-3900

Discover Geological Wonders with OLLI

Learn in-depth about four fascinating geological wonders of the world in this discussion-based study group.

Great Geological Wonders
Thursdays, May 11 - June 1
3:00 - 4:45 p.m.
Peoria NEXT Innovation Center

Planet Earth is covered with a vast diversity of geological phenomena that have, for millennia, inspired people with their majesty, beauty, and sometimes, their strangeness.  In this study group, join fellow OLLI members in a lively discussion of four such eye-popping locations.  With the use of readings, slides, and film clips, Ed Stermer will first talk about Yellowstone and Devil's Tower.  Kurt Butterfield will follow with a consideration of the Amazon Basin and the Dead Sea.  Reading materials will be made available via email; internet and email access is recommended.

$45 - facilitated by Ed Stermer, ICC Earth Science Professor and OLLI trip moderator and Kurt Butterfield, retired Caterpillar civil engineer.

To register, call Bonnie at (309) 677-3900.
