Thursday, September 20, 2018
6:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Fair Oaks, Indiana
Level 2 Learning Trip

Escape to the country when OLLI visits Fair Oaks Farms.  With nearly 37,000 cows and 2,700 pigs (plus 3 to 5 barn cats), Fair Oaks is a 33,000 acre family-owned farm where you can connect learning with the outdoors.

On our daylong agricultural adventure to northwest Indiana, we'll see the dairy enterprise including the birthing barn, the nursery, and the milking parlor.  If we're lucky, we may even witness the arrival of a new calf!  We'll also visit the pork side of the operation as we visit the farrowing barn to watch piglets being born before touring the facility where they grow up.

In total, our visit will provide insights about modern farming efforts that consider not only the care of animals but also protecting the environment.

$119 - includes admissions, tours, lunch, gratuities, snacks, and charter coach transportation.

Register online, or call Gwen or Bonnie at (309) 677-3900.

Chillicothe  Public Library to Feature
Programs on Weather, Mental Health

Decoding the Weather Machine
Screening and Discussion of
NOVA Documentary
Thursday, September 13 (Full documentary)
5:45 p.m.

Disastrous hurricanes. Widespread droughts and wildfires.  Withering heat.  Extreme rainfall.  It is hard not to conclude that something's up with the weather.  Why do scientists overwhelmingly agree that our climate is changing, and that human activity is causing it?  How and when will it affect us through the weather we experience?  And what will it take to bend the trajectory of planetary warming toward more benign outcomes?

Chillicothe Public Library will host a screening of PBS' NOVA documentary with each part followed by a discussion facilitated by National Weather Service meteorologists Heather Stanley and Ed Shimon.  Join scientists around the world on a quest to better understand the workings of the weather and the climate machine we call Earth, and discover how we can be resilient - even thrive - in the face of enormous change.

Nurturing Mental Health
Monday, September 17
6:00 p.m.

Attendees will learn ways to improve mental wellness and combat stress and negative influences.  A panel of licensed clinicians from TrueNorth Solutions, an affiliate of Human Service Center, will also discuss insulating and resiliency factors and how to know when it's time to get help. There will be a time for Q & A.   This program is intended for adults but is open to all ages.

This event is one of several suicide prevention programs intended to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and provide access to resources for those at risk, their families, and the community.  The final program of the series is October 23.

For more information about either of these free programs, visit    chillipld.org  or call  (309) 274-2719.
