Trivia
#TBT 1950s: The Hula Hoop

#ThrowBackTo... 1950s Hula Hooping Fad!

From its humble beginnings as part of Chinese acrobatic routines, the hula hoop was popularized in 1958 when Wham-O toys began mass-producing and marketing it to teens and children.  It quickly caught on, with over 25 million hoops sold within months.  Today, hula hooping has spun back around in popularity, as more people have turned to hooping as a fun way to stay in shape.  Hoop fitness classes and even personal hula hoop trainers can ensure that you get a good workout!

Peoria Reads & Community Coalition Against Heroin

The heroin epidemic is not just on the rise nationally, but is a growing problem in our own area.  Peoria is considered a geographic area of concern for the state of Illinois.

Peoria Reads is encouraging our community to read Dreamland: The True Tale of America's Opiate Epidemic.  Written by Sam Quinones, this book is described as "an explosive and shocking account of addiction in the heartland of America."  This story of how heroin addiction became an epidemic in small-town America was awarded the National Book Critics Circle Award in Nonfiction in March.  For more information about Dreamland, click here.

Copies of Dreamland are available for checkout and additional copies are available for pick-up at all Peoria Public Library locations.  To reserve a copy, contact Roberta Koscielski at robertakoscielski@ppl.peoria.lib.il.us or at 309-497-2186.

Coming soon: Information regarding an upcoming Skype conversation with author Sam Quinones!
