Winter
All Are Welcome: A Note from Laurie Bailey,
Winter Curriculum Committee Chair

Hi, I am Laurie Bailey, Winter Curriculum Chair.  I am new to OLLI, and up until now have only participated in the activities.

I was asked to take on the role of the Winter Curriculum Chair. But I knew nothing about how this organization works. So, I attended a trip planning meeting, a study group planning meeting, and the Fall curriculum planning meeting to see how things are run.

I found out that the people in the meetings were very welcoming.  Before I went, I thought that if I shared an idea, I had to be the one to develop it.  I was wrong!! What I saw was, if a suggestion was made, other people sometimes knew someone who could develop the idea.  I felt relieved!!!

Maybe you have the same misconception that I had.  Come and find out for yourself what goes on during the planning meetings.  You will find a welcoming group with a stress-free environment in which to share your ideas.  OLLI is always wanting and needing new ideas from us.

Planning for the Winter Curriculum is Wednesday, August 16 at 9:00 in the Michel Student Center in the Executive Suite.  Please consider attending and bring a friend.  The more ideas the better!

Parking Assistance Needed for Luncheon and
Class Mornings

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to serve as parking coordinators this fall!

We are still in need of some volunteers to help before and after the Fall Kick-Off Luncheon on  September 20, and some to assist with the Shea park-and-ride before classes on  October 4, 11, 18, and 25.

If you would like to give us an hour or two of your morning or afternoon on one (or more) of those five dates, we'll provide a handy-dandy reflective parking vest, sign, and very short training session.

More than 400 people volunteer for OLLI each year - we'd love to add you to this growing number of fantastic people within our lifelong learning community. Sign up using the link below and we'll be in touch with more information!

If you have any questions, please email Michelle Riggio, Associate Director, Continuing Education, at  [email protected].

Art Institute of Chicago with Donna Carr Roberts (Activity Level 2)
Wednesday, September 13
6:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Get acquainted - or reacquainted - with the Art Institute of Chicago when we spend a day admiring the collection of the second largest art museum in the United States.  We'll explore the Modern Wing, a 264,000 square-foot addition designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano, and its amazing selection of contemporary art.  In addition, participants will enjoy a keynote lecture in Rubloff Auditorium, experience docent-led presentations in front of many of the museum's masterpieces, and watch artist demonstrations throughout the museum.  Donna Carr Roberts, Bradley University's Slane College Artist-in-Residence, will join us to enhance our experience by sharing her artistic insights.

$109 - includes museum admissions, presentations, lunch, gratuities, snacks, and charter coach transportation

Funks Grove and DESTIHL Brewery (Activity Level 3)
Friday, September 22
7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Spend a day with OLLI as we explore the hidden gems (literally) in the small McLean County town of Funks Grove.  Bill and Emma Funk will provide a private tour of the Funk Prairie Home and its adjoining Gem Museum, the largest one-owner gem and mineral collection in the world.  We'll partake in a lunch buffet at the Dixie Trucker's Home, a Route 66 historic site in nearby McLean.  In the afternoon, we'll enjoy a private tour of the new DESTIHL brewery to learn about its history, why the brewmasters boycott bland beer, and get a glimpse (or taste) of what they'll soon be brewing.

$89 - includes admission fees, tours, lunch, gratuities, snacks, and charter coach transportation

A Big Thank You from WOW Students

The gifted and talented students who participated in World of Wonder (WOW) in August enjoyed learning more about the various forms of technology that was lent to them by OLLI members.  Each child chose a piece of technology to research, so included below are photos of students with their chosen technologies - you may see yours there!

If you lent a piece of technology and would like to pick it up, please stop by the Continuing Education office between 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday.  All pieces are in Elly's office.

Thank you for sharing a bit of history with our young learners!

Legacy
Seeking Legacy Speech Volunteers

Laura Bruns, a lecturer in the Department of Communication at Bradley, is seeking OLLI volunteers to serve as subjects for her students' "Legacy Speeches" this fall.

You will be paired with a student who will interview you and write a speech in your honor for their class assignment. This volunteer opportunity would only require that you let the student interview you in person or by phone during the month of September 2017. You will be invited to watch the classroom speech and will be given a copy of the speech to keep!

If you are interested, please sign up by  clicking here.

Hate Crime Forum with Southern Poverty Law Center

Southern Poverty Law Center Forum on Hate Crime
Tuesday, August 29
7:00 p.m.
Michel Student Center Ballrooms, Bradley University
Cost: FREE!

The Southern Poverty Law Center will participate in a panel discussion at Bradley regarding hate crimes.  The Centers' Outreach Director, Lecia Brooks, will join several local representatives to discuss national and local trends in the rise of hate groups and hate crime.  The free public forum will take place in the Michel Student Center Ballroom on Bradley's campus on August 29th beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Ms. Brooks will share thoughts from the Center on what people can do to combat hate crimes in their own communities.  Local panelists will include Rev. Marvin Hightower , Peoria Chapter NAACP; Imam Kamil Mufti, Islamic Foundation of Peoria; Rebecca Carlson, Jewish Federation of Peoria; and Sonny Garcia, Illinois People's Action. It will be moderated by Garry Moore.

The program is sponsored by Bradley University's Department of Sociology, Criminology, & Social Work; African American Studies Program; and the Community Word.
NASA, Caterpillar, & Bradley Offer Unparalleled Opportunity to the Community

Bradley University invites OLLI to attend the NASA 3D-Printed Habitat Challenge
Community Day on August 26 from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the Caterpillar Edwards
Demonstration and Learning Center. Watch teams as they print and test components
that could one day be used to build a habitat on Mars.

Using 3D printing technologies and mission recycled materials, as well as local
indigenous materials, teams will build a miniature dome that will be tested to see how it withstands certain loads and pressure that are found on Mars.

Additionally, visitors can experience interactive displays, meet an astronaut, see an
actual moon rock, and participate in a new video game that's "out of this world."
Because Bradley is hosting the event, Bradley students are not eligible to compete, but
teams from around the world will participate in this incredible event that unites highly
trained scientists from three world class organizations: NASA, Caterpillar, and Bradley
University.

Registration is required, and the event has a limited capacity. Safety  requirements will be strictly enforced.
