Seeking Legacy Speech Volunteers

Laura Bruns, a lecturer in the Department of Communication at Bradley, is seeking OLLI volunteers to serve as subjects for her students' "Legacy Speeches" this fall.

You will be paired with a student who will interview you and write a speech in your honor for their class assignment. This volunteer opportunity would only require that you let the student interview you in person or by phone during the month of September 2017. You will be invited to watch the classroom speech and will be given a copy of the speech to keep!

Share Your Bradley Memories: Freshman Hats

Hail Red and White!

OLLI's Third Annual Trivia Fundraiser is a month away, and this year's theme is Hail Red and White, Bradley University's official song. To get us in the school spirit, we'd love to see photos or hear memories from your days at Bradley!

This week's memory comes from OLLI members Ed and Melody Hartman:

"In 1964, my soon-to-be wife Melody Athey (Hartman) had to wear a Freshman beanie until Homecoming.  Today, that would be classified as harassment!  Back then, it was what Freshmen had to do.  When I transferred to B.U. (as a Sophomore in 1966) I was an upperclassman and wasn't humiliated with the beanie.  That was one tradition that wouldn't "fly" today.

You also could not have females in your off-campus housing and men were forbidden in the dormitory rooms or hallways of all female dorms .  You would be expelled if you violated any of these rules.  A lot has changed in 43 years.

Regards,

Ed Hartman

PS:  Melody still has her beanie!"

What do you remember from your early days on the Hilltop?  Send your photos and stories to Elly at [email protected] or share them with us on Facebook!

Volunteer for OLLI:  Parking Coordinators Needed

OLLI is looking for some amazing volunteers to assist members at our park-and-ride lots before and after the Fall Kick-Off Luncheon and Fall Classes.

If you would like to give us an hour or two of your morning or afternoon on one (or more) of those five dates, we'll provide a handy-dandy reflective parking vest, sign, and very short training session.

More than 400 people volunteer for OLLI each year - we'd love to add you to this growing number of fantastic people within our lifelong learning community. Sign up using the link below and we'll be in touch with more information!

If you have any questions, please email Michelle Riggio, Associate Director, Continuing Education, at [email protected].

NASA, Caterpillar, & Bradley Offer Unparalleled Opportunity to the Community

Bradley University invites OLLI to attend the NASA 3D-Printed Habitat Challenge
Community Day on August 26 from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.at the Caterpillar Edwards
Demonstration and Learning Center. Watch teams as they print and test components
that could one day be used to build a habitat on Mars.

Using 3D printing technologies and mission recycled materials, as well as local
indigenous materials, teams will build a miniature dome that will be tested to see how it withstands certain loads and pressure that are found on Mars.

Additionally, visitors can experience interactive displays, meet an astronaut, see an
actual moon rock, and participate in a new video game that's "out of this world."
Because Bradley is hosting the event, Bradley students are not eligible to compete, but
teams from around the world will participate in this incredible event that unites highly
trained scientists from three world class organizations: NASA, Caterpillar, and Bradley
University.

Registration is required, and the event has a limited capacity. Safety  requirements will be strictly enforced.
