Trivia Night A Success

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Trivia Night Fundraiser last Friday!

We had a swell time "at the hop," testing our trivia knowledge, enjoying good company and food, winning fabulous raffle prizes, and even hula hooping!

Congratulations to the highest-scoring team, "Good Golly, Miss OLLI," and the lowest-scoring team, "The Great Pretenders--" because if you had fun, you won!

We would also like to thank our signature sponsor, Cypress Asset Managem ent, and our supporting sponsors for their generous contributions to the event.

Farm
Visit Fair Oaks Farm!

Fair Oaks Farm (Activity Level 3)
Wednesday, September 28
7:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Witness how four million glasses of milk are produced daily by 32,000 cows when we travel to the amazing 25,000 acre Fair Oaks Farm, located in northwestern Indiana. We'll learn how approximately 80 or more calves are born on the farm daily, and (if we are lucky) will have an opportunity to witness one of the real and extraordinary
events in the Birthing Barn while the dairy midwife assists. We'll also get to see the nursery where newborns are hand-fed, tour the milking parlor, and more. This tour also includes The Pig Experience, where we can see piglets in the growing barn and maybe even another chance to witness the miracle of life in the farrowing barn.

$109 - includes admission fees, tours, presentations, lunch, gratuities, snacks, and charter coach transportation

Help Plan OLLI Winter Classes

More than 500 volunteers create and deliver the OLLI experience each year - including volunteers who teach classes, guide our tours on our learning trips, moderate our cinema events, assist in the park-and-ride lots during classes, decorate tables for our kick-off luncheons, serve as hosts during classes, facilitate our study groups, develop our curriculum, and more.

We invite you to attend the following OLLI Winter Curriculum Committee meeting to provide insight about your past class experiences and to help us create a slate of courses for the upcoming season.  Each of our volunteers - like you - brings a unique personal network of people and organizations that can help create the activities that OLLI offers its members.

WHEN:
* Wednesday, September 7, at 9:00 a.m.
* P arking is available in the Visitor's Lot

WHERE:

Peoria Disposal Company and Peoria County Landfill (Activity Level 3)
Friday, September 9
9:45 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Join OLLI's very own Les Bergsten, Chairman of the Peoria City/County Landfill Committee, for a visit to the Peoria Disposal Company (PDC) offices and a tour of
the landfill. As the City of Peoria's waste and recycling collection service contractor, PDC handles hazardous and non-hazardous waste collection and disposal, waste
treatment, waste transportation and brokerage, laboratory analysis, and more.

Wheels O' Time featuring the Silver Streak (Activity Level 2)
Wednesday, September 14
11:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
In 1979, two Peoria-area men needed storage space for a number of collector cars. They bought a five-acre tract of land, erected a building, and asked other hobbyists to
join them. The result of their effort is Wheels O' Time, a museum near Dunlap that features a multitude of interactive exhibits that describe what life was like in Peoria between 50 and 100 years ago. During this private, guided tour of the museum, we'll visit three spacious buildings that house an eclectic collection of antique autos (including a Ford Model T, Packard, Austin Healey and more), Caterpillar machinery, clocks, toys, tools, coin-operated machines, visitor-activated train layouts, and a calliope. We will also have a unique opportunity to see the featured exhibit "Silver Streak," a 1926 Ford Model T owned by John Butte, w hich is the subject of his book  Darlene's Silver Streak and the Bradford Model T Girls.

$30 - includes lunch, gratuities, tour, fees, and shuttle transportation

CSE Software and Simformotion (Activity Level 2)
Monday, September 19
8:45 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Headquartered in Peoria, CSE Software is a privately held company founded in 1990 by President Ken Pflederer. Partners Lara Aaron and Renee Gorrell joined the
business in 1992. Sister company Simformotion LLC was established by the three owners as a separate company in 2008 to handle the design, manufacturing, and sales of simulators. In 2009 CSE Software was awarded the license for CAT heavy equipment simulators by Caterpillar. CSE manufacturers 13 models sold on a global scale, with more in development. Join us for a behind-the-scenes tour at this innovative company where we'll learn how they "make magic."

$25 - includes lunch, gratuities, tour, and shuttle transportation

9:30 - 11:30 a.m.
Peoria NEXT Innovation Center
Register by August 30

This study group will bring together a community of curious OLLI souls for five sessions to engage with ideas and each other.  We will watch and listen to several of the TED talks at our leisure during the week and then come together to critically discuss our thoughts and observations about the ideas presented in the talks.  The talks selected by the facilitator will include ideas about life, art, and global issues and will be different from those discussed in previous TED study groups.  Remote attendance will be available (maximum remote 2).  Contact the facilitator for details.

$45 - facilitated by Greg Peine, OLLI member and frequent study group facilitator.

Arguments for and Against the 'Promise of Artificial Intelligence'
Tuesdays, September 13 - October 11
1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Peoria NEXT Innovation Center
Register by August 30

As technology rapidly progresses, some proponents of artificial intelligence (AI) believe that it will help solve complex social challenges and offer immortality via virtual humans.  AI's critics say that we should proceed with caution - that its rewards may be overpromised, and that the pursuit of superintelligence and autonomous machines may result in unintended consequences.  Is this the stuff of science fiction?  Should we fear AI, or will these fears prevent the next technological revolution?  In this study group we will take a close look at the arguments presented by both proponents and critics of "the promise of AI."  Regardless  of the side you favor at the beginning of the discussions, be prepared to discover good reasons to switch.  Remote attendance is available (maximum remote 2).  Contact the facilitator for details.  During our meetings we will view additional video snippets and engage in a facilitated discussion focused on questions from a study guide provided by the facilitator.

$45 - facilitated by Greg Peine, OLLI member and frequent study group facilitator.

OLLI's Reader's Theatre: Spoon River Anthology
Thursdays, September 15 - October 20
10:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
Humana Guidance Center

Spoon River Anthology, Edgar Lee Masters' collection of epitaphs of people who lived
in a small-town in Illinois, remains a reader's favorite to this day. Enrollees in this group will rehearse and then perform the play in a reader's theatre format. All participants will be included in all aspects of the production process. As part of the
preparation for their four performances, participants will also visit Lewistown, Illinois, the fictional site of the play. Scripts are included in the fee.

$45 - facilitated by Dr. Bettsey Barhorst, President-Emeritus, Madison Area Technical College, Illinois Central College administrator, and speech professor.

Help a Bradley Speech Student

Last spring, Laura Bruns, a Bradley University  Speech Communication Lecturer, brought her students to OLLI class breaks so they could meet OLLI members and practice their conversational skills.

We will repeat this activity during Fall Class breaks, but are working to further develop the relationship between OLLI members and undergraduate students.

As such, we would like to offer you the chance to be paired with an honors Communication 103 student who will write a "tribute  speech" about you.

Tribute  speeches are short talks about a person's life, accomplishments, and advice.  Once you've been matched, an honors student would meet with you at a mutually convenient time, talk about your career, hobbies, family, goals, etc., then write a  speechabout what they've learned about you. You will be invited to attend class with the student and listen to his or her completed  speech, but attendance is not required.

If you would like to participate in this great inter-generational activity, please fill out an online form by clicking here.

Thank you in advance for helping our Bradley students further develop their communication skills!
