If you have not yet experienced Toraason Glass with OLLI, now is your chance to take one of the most popular trips we offer!  Next week we will offer an extra learning trip to visit Hiram Toraason's glass blowing workshop, where he and his apprentices transform hot molten glass into works of art.  Learn more about this fast-paced process as Hiram performs a live demonstration with commentary.  Afterwards we will enjoy lunch at Childer's Eatery.   Register today by calling Gwen at 309-677-3900!

Deere
Visit Historical Homes in the Quad Cities

Take this regional trip to the Quad Cities with OLLI to visit two historic homes in addition to learning about the John Deere Classic golf tournament, named Tournament of the Year in 2017 by the PGA Tour.

John Deere: From Golf Classic to Historical Homes  (Activity Level 3)

On this Deere-inspired trip, not only will we visit the TPC Deere Run golf course to learn about the logistics involved in hosting one of the most successful golf tournaments, but we will also visit the beautiful historic sites at the Butterworth Center and the Deere-Wiman House.

We'll enjoy lunch at the TPC Deere Run Clubhouse, which features spectacular views of the 18th hole and the picturesque Rock River.  Then we will tour  the historic Butterworth Center and Deere-Winman House, where we will learn about their unique features including pipe organs, libraries, Victorian architecture, acres of formal gardens, and much more!

Study the American Home Front Effort in World War II

Over Here: Winning World War II on the Home Front

The United States Services Organization (USO) was yet another way that folks n the American home front supported our military personnel throughout World War II.  Take a look at this short clip of Bob Hope and Frances Langford singing "Thanks for the Memories" for troops stations at Bougainville in the Solomon Islands in 1944.  Join participants in the OLLI study group, "Over Here: Winning World War II on the Home Front" to learn about the vital role US citizens played in the war effort.  Call our office at 309-677-3900 to register!

East Peoria's new City Hall officially opened in November 2015.  The $2 million building, located in the Levee District, was constructed at no cost to taxpayers and shares its space with the new Fondulac District Library.  We'll meet with Mayor Dave Mingus and City Administrator Jeffrey Elder for a private tour of the facility, including the city council chambers and civic plaza, and learn more about the functions from the various department directors located within the East Peoria City Hall.

WOW Thanks You for Your Recyclables

World of Wonder (WOW), a summer camp for gifted and talented students run by Continuing Education, has been collecting recyclable items for teachers to use in creative, hands-on projects.  We would like to thank everyone who made a contribution toward our collection efforts.  Thanks to the generosity of our OLLI members, we have collected all the recyclable items requested by our teachers!

Technology Seminar Invites OLLI to Attend!

OLLI members are invited to join Taming Technology, a conference at Bradley University June 19 - 21. Sessions will offer K - 12 teachers opportunities to investigate new technologies and how they can be integrated in both the classroom and in personal life. Featuring beginner and advanced tracks, the conference will explore contemporary tools such as phones and tablets as well as apps and online resources. Professional development credit is also available.

The full conference registration fee is $65 with discounts available for early career educators with up to 5 years' experience. The single day fee is $41. Attendees can choose to stay in area hotels or in campus housing.

Preview Bradley Alumni Chorale's Touring Performance

Bradley Alumni Chorale Bon Voyage Concert

The Bradley Alumni Chorale, an ensemble of 21 singers spanning five decades of membership in the Bradley Chorale, will present a preview of the concert they will perform in and around Barcelona, Spain, June 19 through 27.  Included in the program is a short Mozart Mass; Randall Thompson's "Alleluia;" "Papa nou" (Our Father) by Emile Desamours, and other choral favorites.  The group will perform in different locations, notably in the Barcelona Cathedral, and the Basilica de Santa Maria in Igaulada while touring in Spain.

Hindu Temple of Central Illinois, 4224 W Prairie Ln, Peoria

The Hindu Temple of Central Illinois and Gita Vichara Group of Peoria Area invite OLLI members to participate in discourses and interactive sessions in English, featuring selected verses from Chapter 3 of Bhagavad Gita by Swami Viditatmananda Saraswati.   All three sessions are free and open to all who wish to attend.  

Sri Swami Viditatmananda, the principal disciple of Sri Swami Dayananda Saraswati, of Arsha Vidya Gurukulam in Salyorsburg, PA.  He expounds Vedanta with a simplicity and directness that make it easy to assimilate.  Having lived and worked in the United States as an engineer prior to becoming a renunciate, Swami Viditatmananda is familiar with the lifestyles in India and the West.  With his insight into both cultures, he reaches our to everyone with equal ease.

Swami Viditatmananda is the founder of Tattvatirtha Ashram in Ahmedabad in Gujarat.  Swamiji conducts vedantic retreats and gives talks in Gujarat and has authored several books and CDs.  Swamiji visits Arsha Vidya Gurukulam every summer to conduct classes and family retreats in USA.

Commercially licensed drone pilot Dean Poignant will share how to get started with flying drones. Learn about selecting a drone, federal and local regulations, safety while flying, and what unlicensed, recreational drone pilots may legally do. Q & A session and a flying demonstration (weather-permitting) to follow.

Learn how to recognize and avoid a variety of scams and prevent identity theft in this free program by Chillicothe's own Chief of Police, Scott Mettille. The program is offered twice to fit your schedule.

Join our book club for adults as we discuss  H Is for Hawk , by Helen McDonald, and enjoy tea and refreshments. Copies of the book are available to check out at the front desk.
