Monthly Meeting

November 9, 2022 – Who are the Ukrainians Ukraine vs Russia – The History of Relationships between Neighboring Countries

Presented by Olga Liskiwsky

Ukraine is a highly traditional country where the observance of certain customs and practices plays a central role in its culture. Younger generations gladly adopt and follow these rituals. This lecture will give us an inside look at Ukrainian life and history. It will also touch on the relationship between Ukraine and Russian populations and the turmoil the Ukrainians are living with because of the Russian invasion. Also included is a brief overview of the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum, and its 64-year history of documenting and sharing Ukrainian culture and the story of the immigration of Ukrainians to Southeast Michigan.

Supporting herself and her two daughters by taking in a decrepit old boarder, acid-tongued Beatrice Hunsdorfer wreaks a petty vengeance on everyone around her. Her older daughter, Ruth, is a pretty but highly strung girl subject to convulsions, while her younger girl, Tillie, plain and almost pathologically shy, demonstrates an intuitive gift for science. Encouraged by her teacher, Tillie conducts a botanical experiment, winning a prize at her high school. Proud but jealous, too filled with her own hurt to accept her daughter's success, Beatrice can only maim when she needs to love and deride when she intends to praise. Yet, as Tillie's experiment proves, something beautiful and full of promise can emerge from even the most barren, afflicted soil.

Due to some use of strong language, recommended age is 13+.

A Note From Advisory Board Chair Roger Spann

I love calendars. I have them hanging in almost every room in my home. I love the pictures and I love the sayings. I recently found my first 2023 calendar which is called "The Great Outdoors." It is pictures of (I bet you figured it out) the outdoors with a saying by a well-known person. As I read through the twelve months I couldn't help but think of OLLI and the people of OLLI. Let me share just a few and see what you think.

THE EARTH HAS MUSIC FOR THOSE WHO LISTEN. Wm. Shakespeare   I am making one of my goals for the coming year to open my ears and hear the music that the earth offers me, if I will only listen.

LIVE THE LIFE YOU'VE DREAMED.  Henry David Thoreau   I have had so many dreams, but the time has come to live the life I have only dreamed about so far.

TO WALK IN NATURE IS TO WITNESS A THOUSAND MIRACLES.  Mary Davis   I have walked on many trails in the Palm Springs and Joshua Tree National Park area and have witnessed many of the miracles that Mary mentions.

AFTER A DAY'S WALK, EVERYTHING HAS TWICE ITS USUAL VALUE.  G.M. Trevelyan  I have found this to be so true.

IN ALL THINGS OF NATURE THERE IS SOMETHING OF THE MARVELOUS.  Aristotle   All we have to do is look around us and the marvelous is there.

Let me share just one more which I believe is what happens to OLLI members. RETURNING HOME IS THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF LONG-DISTANCE HIKING. YOU HAVE GROWN OUTSIDE THE PUZZLE AND YOUR PIECE NO LONGER FITS.  John Burroughs   SVSU-OLLI members, those of us who are 50 and better, are always learning and growing and changing and making our lives better. Isn't it great that we have this wonderful organization to help guide us as we explore the world around us. See you soon.
