Monthly Meeting

October 12, 2022 – Michigan’s Haunted Lighthouses

Presented by Dianna Stampfler

What is it about lighthouses that attract ghostly spirits? Maybe it’s simply a passion that will not go away. Lighthouse keepers were known to be extremely dedicated to their profession and it seems many were never able to give it up — even after death. More than 30 lighthouses in Michigan are rumored to be haunted. From the smell of cigar smoke at Seul Choix Point Light to the mysterious housekeeping at White River Light Station and the antics at Waugoshance Shoal, these stories will entertain all ages. This popular program is coming from the pages of Michigan’s Haunted Lighthouses — a book by Dianna Stampfler, published in spring 2019 by The History Press.

Dianna will also be instructing a class this same date:

(143) Death and Lighthouses on the Great Lakes

You can find more information about this class on Page 7 of the Fall Catalog or click the link above to register. The fee for the class is $20 per member.

Tiny Beautiful Things Synopsis:

Play Dates & Times:

Wed., Oct. 5 - Sat., Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m.

Sun., Oct. 9 at 3:00 p.m.

Based on the best-selling book by Cheryl Strayed and adapted for the stage by Nia Vardalos, Tiny Beautiful Things personifies the questions and answers that “Sugar” was publishing online from 2010-2012. When the struggling writer was asked to take over the unpaid, anonymous position of advice columnist, Strayed used empathy and her personal experiences to help those seeking guidance for obstacles both large and small. Tiny Beautiful Things is a play about reaching when you’re stuck, healing when you’re broken, and finding the courage to take on the questions which have no answers. “Tiny Beautiful Things is about the endangered art of listening to – and really hearing and responding to – other people…it works beautifully as a sustained theatrical exercise in empathy” – The New York Times

Due to some adult themes and language, recommended age is 13+.

Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds Synopsis:

Play Dates & Times:

Wed., Nov. 16 - Sat., Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Sun., Nov. 20 at 3:00 p.m.

Supporting herself and her two daughters by taking in a decrepit old boarder, acid-tongued Beatrice Hunsdorfer wreaks a petty vengeance on everyone around her. Her older daughter, Ruth, is a pretty but highly strung girl subject to convulsions, while her younger girl, Tillie, plain and almost pathologically shy, demonstrates an intuitive gift for science. Encouraged by her teacher, Tillie conducts a botanical experiment, winning a prize at her high school. Proud but jealous, too filled with her own hurt to accept her daughter's success, Beatrice can only maim when she needs to love and deride when she intends to praise. Yet, as Tillie's experiment proves, something beautiful and full of promise can emerge from even the most barren, afflicted soil.

Due to some use of strong language, recommended age is 13+.

Halloween Fun Facts

  • Every civilization has some form of a belief or ritual honoring those who have passed away. These acts are based on individual ideas on what happens to those when they die; where their souls go; how those still living may honor them; or how to answer to spirits that are still around. Halloween has become a modern day celebration of this.

A Note From Advisory Board Chair Roger Spann

The new calendar year for our SVSU-OLLI has begun. Our year runs from September 1 to August 31. And what a beginning it has been. OLLI has returned to international travel with trips to England, Scotland, and Wales as well as two trips to the Canadian Rockies. Comments regarding day trips have been extremely positive. I was a part of the 43 members on the Everything Ford day trip which received outstanding reviews. Our interest groups are showing a new and exciting interest in many activities. Classes with many new and interesting topics are bringing a new meaning to lifelong learning. And well, what do I say about our first monthly meeting of our new year. The almost 250 people in attendance had an indescribable time on September 14 as they enjoyed the Dueling Pianos who helped us kick off 2022/2023. There is so much happening. Keep your catalog close by. Check your email daily for updates. No one can do it all, but pick and choose from over 100 activities and become a part of our fantastic organization. There's no doubt about it--our OLLI IS BACK. Our membership is growing, but we still need anyone who has not renewed or joined to do so. The larger our membership, the more we can do. Please double check to make sure you are an official member for this year. It is a real privilege for me to serve as your Advisory Board president for the coming year. See you all soon at one of many OLLI events.
