This week
,
Friday, October 5th, 2018 at 12:15pm - 1:30 pm, Rooms 113-119
.
attend "Ancient America's History: Fifty Archaeological Sites to See for Yourself" presented by Professor Kenneth Feder.
Professor Feder will explore America’s ancient past - a history spanning 13,000 years that is more diverse and more technologically and artistically sophisticated than most people appreciate. Dr. Feder has visited all 50 archaeological sites highlighted in his latest book,
Ancient America: Fifty Archaeological Sites to See For Yourself.
Professor Feder will share the wonders of America’s first peoples, among them cliff dwellers, mound builders, and rock artists. His primary research interests include the archaeology of the native peoples of New England and the analysis of public perceptions about the human past. He is the author of several books. On the topic of human antiquity, one producer described him as being “a beacon of sanity in a sea of madness,” which, in Feder’s words, “is a very scary thought.”
All OLLI members with up-to-date, current memberships
are welcome to attend OLLI Cafe presentations.

Upcoming UConn Event:
Gaza Girls
|
|
Gaza Girls
with Monique Jacques on Tuesday, October 9, 2018
@ 12:30 - 1:30 pm, WREC 203 (Rectory building)
OLLI members welcome!
Monique Jaques is an American photojournalist based in Istanbul, Turkey. She holds a BFA degree from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Her work focuses on the representation of women through documentary photography and video. Her multi-award-winning approach to journalism reframes prevailing narratives and examines modern-day issues misrepresented in the media. Five years ago Monique traveled to Gaza to cover an eight-day war between Israel defense forces and Hamas. Since then, she has returned several times, driven, she says, “to document the strength, creativity and vibrancy of Palestinian girls and young women. I am awed and haunted by their tremendous resilience, even in the face of unimaginable adversity. I also see so much similarity between these teenaged girls and the teenaged girl I once was, despite our different circumstances.” Her major body of work ‘Gaza Girls: Growing up in the Gaza Strip” challenges mainstream notions of this complicated place and explores issues of identity and religion. Monique will speak about her experiences in preparing this book, accompanying her talk with her many vibrant photographs.

- PR-421 Dante's Inferno: To Hell and Back with Doug Welsh will now be held in Room 224 (on the second floor) for the rest of the semester.
- There will be a make-up class for LW-475 African American Poets with Deirdre Wright on Friday, November 16th at 1:45 pm - 3:45 pm in Room 203.
|
|
- Where/when is my class? Remember to double-check your course dates, times, and room assignments before you arrive to campus! Our online course catalog has the most up-to-date information. Any unforeseen, last-minute changes will be listed on our Room Assignments chart in the main lobby or on the bulletin board outside the OLLI Office (Room 103). Thank you!
- "Sitting in" on OLLI Classes: With the semester beginning this week, please remember that you are not permitted to sit in on an OLLI class if you are not officially registered for the class. There are three main reasons why this is not permitted: 1) Classrooms on campus have strict capacity limits (even if a classroom looks like it can fit more students, there are rules related to fire hazards and other university safety standards). 2) Most presenters have a preferred class size (again, even if a classroom looks like it can fit more students, the presenter might not feel comfortable teaching a large group that exceeds their size preference). 3) It is simply unfair for a person who has not paid for a class to sit alongside students who have paid to be in the class. Even if a presenter has told you that it is okay for you to sit in, please refrain from doing so. Thank you for your cooperation.
- Participating in an OLLI Club or Committee: Please be reminded that you are not permitted to be part of an OLLI Club or Committee unless you have a valid, up-to-date membership.
- Classroom space: OLLI Staff and Instructors thank you for being mindful of the other classes using the classroom. Please leave in a timely manner in order to give each incoming instructor ample time and space to set up for his/her class.
- Is it too late to sign up for classes? A handful of OLLI classes don't begin until October, so there is still time to sign up! If you'd like a Fall 2018 course catalog mailed to you, call 203-236-9924 or email osher@uconn.edu.
- Civility: OLLI is proud to offer courses that cover diverse and challenging subjects. Discussion of ideas is a core part of learning. Please remember that respect, and a civil exchange of views, are key to understanding each other.
- Consideration for others: As always, please be considerate of your fellow students in the classroom, especially with regard to leaving and entering the classroom quietly, and also to those who may be allergic or sensitive to strong perfumes, fabric softeners, etc.

OLLI members
with University-issued parking decals
may park in the following locations on the following days:
- Fridays, any time: UConn's attached ramp garage (entrance on North Elm St.) or Scovill Street Garage (33 Scovill Street)
- Monday - Thursday, morning - 5:00pm: Scovill Street Garage
- Monday - Thursday, 5:00pm or later: UConn's attached ramp garage or Scovill Street Garage
HAVEN'T RECEIVED YOUR PERMIT YET?
Permits are not mailed out until Parking Services receives payment. Call Parking Services directly (860-486-4930) to check on your payment status.
Please note:
UConn offers permits at a significant discount to OLLI members. The reason OLLI members may not park in the attached garage before 5:00pm Monday through Thursday is due to the significant number of UConn undergraduate classes on these days. The University has a responsibility to ensure there are parking spaces available for UConn students attending classes, both in the attached garage and in the Scovill Street garage.
We appreciate this is not always ideal for OLLI members attending day-time classes Monday through Thursday, but we do the best we can to accommodate members within the responsibilities and requirements of the University.
