On Thursday, April 27th, OLLI members and their friends started very early to depart for their second day trip since the Covid shutdowns. How exciting it was to join others again for a trip to Boston to admire glass work at two different locations.
In the morning we visited the Mary Baker Eddy Library, part of the Christian Science Publishing Society headquarters in Boston. Mary Baker Eddy, a woman ahead of her times, was the founder of the church of Christian Scientists and also the publisher of the Christian Science Monitor. One of the outstanding sights in the publishing headquarters is a giant stained glass globe called the Mapparium. It is unique in that it is three stories high and you walk through it via a bridge. Standing inside, you view the countries of the world in 1935, when it was made. It was wonderful being surrounded by the world.
After an enjoyable lunch at Maggiano's, our group then proceeded to the Harvard Museum of Natural History to see the Ware Collection of Glass Flowers.
In 1886 Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka, a father and son team of Czech glass artists, were commissioned by the director of the Botanical Museum to make extremely lifelike glass models of flowers to help in University's instruction. Over fifty years, up to 1936, the Blaschkas made 4,300 glass models of 780 plant species. It was amazing to see the lifelike details of these intricate models. It is a one of a kind display.
It was definitely was a day to be treasured, full of information and the beauty of glass.

Special Offer for OLLI Members!
On Wednesday, May 24th at 7 PM, recently retired registered nurse Patty Walcott Henderson will share the inspiring story of how she turned her life around in her second act. This event is made possible through the ongoing support of Rourke Insurance Agency, Timothy W. & Mary Ellen Rourke, and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UConn Waterbury.
| |
Walcott Henderson, a Wolcott, CT native who graduated with the Wolcott High School class of 1973 and St. Francis School of Nursing, relocated to Washington state forty years ago. A mother of four and a grandmother, she’s always been fit and led an active and healthy lifestyle. However, after suffering broken bones and an osteoporosis diagnosis, she felt “like a marshmallow,” apathetic and sloth-like. At the urging of one of her daughters, she decided to give weightlifting a try to improve her bone health, and the rest is history. Patty is now a National Physique Committee bikini competitor with Team Boss Bodies and feels fabulous.
Patty has a personal connection with OLLI through her sister, Linda Higginson. So, OLLI members will receive $5 off tickets with the code: HEALTH
