A Christ-centered community,

to meet the needs of the whole child.
August 26, 2020
Dear OLMC Families,

I am so grateful to God for providing us with the ability to attend school in-person for 2 weeks now.  This pandemic has helped me to grow in gratitude and open my eyes more to the many blessings I had taken for granted in the past.  Our Lord has graciously provided us with beautiful weather during the school day which has allowed the children to be outside more.  As of today, we have had zero reported cases of Covid-19 among our students and staff for the last 2 weeks.  Thanks be to God!  If our status changes, we will communicate to parents any modifications we would make to our mode of learning.  I just want to remind you of our policy: If one student tests positive, we will call the Department of Health and assist with contact tracing.  In-person learning will continue in that situation, but those students who are identified as close contacts will be quarantined in their own homes and given classwork and homework to complete outside of school.  If the school becomes aware of a situation in which 2 students in the same grade test positive, we will again consult with the ISDH to assist in contact tracing and the entire grade-level that was affected will move to e-Learning for 2 weeks.

We did receive a few questions regarding Guerin Catholic’s decision to move to e-Learning through Labor Day.  Because we have no positive cases at this time, OLMC School will continue with our in-person learning.  However, any OLMC student who has a sibling who tests positive, regardless of the school he/she attends,  will be quarantined for 14 days per the directives of the Indiana State Department of Health.

Yesterday, the Indiana State Department of Health released new guidelines that affected 2 specific areas: (1) pre-screening for symptoms and (2) when a student can return to school.

You can access these updated resources on our Covid-19 Update page located on our school website.  I ask that all parents read through these guidelines thoroughly to help you understand how the school is discerning particular cases at this time.  There are many changes delineated in these documents, but here are just a few:

Pre-screening for Covid-19 Symptoms: Having a runny or stuffy nose is no longer considered to be one of the main symptoms to look for when pre-screening.  Here is a new symptom list: Covid-19 Screening for Parents  New!
  • Temperature 100.4 degrees F or higher when taken by mouth (OLMC policy is 100.0 degrees)
  • Sore throat
  • New uncontrolled cough that causes difficulty breathing (for students with chronic allergic/asthmatic cough, a change in their cough from baseline)
  • Diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal pain
  • New onset of severe headache, especially with a fever
  • Loss of taste or smell

When a student can return to school: New!
  • If a child exhibits Covid-19 symptoms, then the entire household should quarantine and none of the children should attend school.  This is a significant change from our former guidelines that allowed non-symptomatic siblings to attend school.  With these new guidelines, the other siblings must stay home from school as well, regardless of whether they attend OLMC or a different school.
  • If a child gets sick during school and exhibits Covid-19 symptoms, all of the siblings must also go home with the child.  The symptomatic child and siblings must remain at home until test results come back.
  • If a child gets tested and receives a negative test result, siblings can return to school right away as long as they are not symptomatic and have not been exposed to a person infected with Covid-19.  The symptomatic child with a negative test result can return to school as long as he/she has been fever-free for 72 hours without fever-reducing medication, symptoms have improved, and he/she has not been recently exposed to a person infected with Covid-19.
  • Of course, if a child gets tested and receives a positive result, the policy has always been in place that the infected child needs to isolate for at least 10 days and the other household members must quarantine for 14 days.  This is just general information; please read through the resources on our school page for exact details on isolation and quarantine directives.

Thank you to all of the OLMC parents who have emailed and asked us for guidance regarding their individual family situation.  We appreciate that you are keeping your children home until you receive some direction.  OLMC School’s discernment of cases is based on the updates we receive from the Hamilton County Department of Health.  When we are not certain of how to respond to a family’s individual health situation, we contact the Dept. of Health and will get back to you when we have received a definite decision.  I am grateful for all of the precautions you are taking to keep your family and our community at large safe and healthy.  Please continue to practice the good habits delineated by the CDC and the ISDH so we can keep our doors open throughout the year.  All of the OLMC staff wants our children to be able to benefit from as much in-person learning in a loving, Christ-centered community.

In Christ, our hope,
Sister Maria Benedicta, O.P.

Farewell & Good Luck:
Please read the message below from Kristen Gater. We appreciate all of her hard work and dedication to our school, especially with the extra contributions to our re-opening plan. Her presence in the office will be missed!

Dear OLMC School community,
I am so grateful to have been part of the OLMC School community for the past year! It has brought me such joy to be part of the school and to work with all of you. Due to the nature of COVID-19 and increasing responsibilities to help my Grandparents, God has called me to take time off work to focus on helping them without putting them at increased risk. It is with sadness I will be be leaving, but I trust that this is where God is asking me to be at this time. I will miss all of you!!

In Christ,
Kristen Gater

Picture Day Is Tomorrow!
New date!! Due to scheduling conflicts our date has been moved up to tomorrow.

Don't panic...Students should come to school dressed in the school uniform as we have done in the past. So no shopping for a special outfit! Easy, peasy!

We are using Inter-State Studio & Publishing again this year. All orders and viewing of proofs will be done electronically this year. Proof copies of your child's picture will be emailed to you about 14 days after picture day. We will be providing a list of parent emails to Inter-State Studio & Publishing for this purpose. They do not sell or share their contact lists outside of their company.

You can order online at https://inter-state.com/order before Picture Day or after your proofs are received via email. Our picture day code is 52009VA. Click here for the picture day flyer.

Class composites are not being offered at this time. There may be an opportunity to purchase later in the spring.

Picture re-take day will be Oct 15 if your child happens to be sick or otherwise absent on this day.
Reminders from the Administration:
Attendance:
  • email: attendance@olmc1.org
  • or call 317-846-1118
  • When calling or emailing, please provide specific symptoms so we can safely determine the best course of action for each specific instance. Simply stating your child is "not well" will prompt additional communication and extra work for everyone.

Afternoon Carpool:
  • Please remain in or near your car while waiting for your child(ren). We continue to follow social distancing guidelines of 6 feet of distance from others as best we can.
  • Please keep vehicle doors closed (sliding doors may be open). Doors that swing open interfere with line of sight of children searching for cars in line.
  • Turn vehicles off. Everyone can benefit from not breathing in the extra exhaust fumes.

Directory Spot - School Directory:
Directory Spot is the program for our electronic school family directory.

You should be receiving an email from Directory Spot with instructions on how to access the online directory tomorrow.

In the meantime, you can find teacher/staff emails on the school website here: https://school.olmc1.org/directory-1
Library Corner:
  • Our Reader's Wall is starting to take shape. Thank you for those who have sent in their pictures of their kids reading. We want YOUR students to be on it so please continue to send in your 4x6 picture of your student reading a book.

  • Our annual Birthday Club is in full swing. Happy Birthday to Nora Armie, Liza Clark, Faye Dorsel, Madeline Doyle, Brigg Jaynes, Crosby Lemberger, Henry Lohman, Caius Mahan, Rocco Sansone, and Gianna Senger! Thank you for your donation to our library! Your name will be placed inside of a new book for everyone to read.

  • Notices have gone home if you still have a book checked out from last year. Please return the book(s) as soon as possible. If you no longer have the book, please contact Jane Ann at gaskillj@olmc1.org.
OLMC Volunteer Spotlight:
Our spotlight this week is on Sarah Galvin. Click here to learn about Sarah.

We are blessed to have so many caring volunteers who dedicate their time each day to help our school and community be the amazing faith-filled place it is! We would like to spend some time highlighting our volunteers as a small way to say THANK YOU to all that they do!

We are asking for your help to nominate the volunteers who give their time and talents to our school and community. Here is the link to the nomination form: https://forms.gle/a9behPhxsezrQxVt6

SCRIP from Kroger, Marsh and Aldi will also be available for sale, and make excellent gifts for the Sisters.

If your last name starts with:

Meals Sign Up for the Sisters:
We are pleased to share that Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School families will be “hosting" Wednesday Meals for the Sisters during the school year again this year. To help show our support, love and appreciation for all that the Sisters do for our school community, children and families, we have created a sign up genius for families to volunteer to prepare a meal to bring to the Sisters at the Convent each Wednesday throughout the school year.

There are 6 Sisters residing at the convent and there are NO food allergies. Meals should be brought warm and ready to eat and should be delivered to the Convent between 4:30 and 4:45 each Wednesday.

Please click on the link below if you would like to volunteer to provide a meal. We ask that you start with only one or two volunteer slots to allow many of our new families the opportunity to sign up. If, after a few weeks, there are additional spots still open, please then feel free to sign up for more spots.

If you have any questions, please contact Maria Bedford at mariabedford11@gmail.com or 317-691-6544. Wendy Pottratz at w.pottratz@gmail.com or 317-508-1725.

Thank you so much for your generosity!

God bless you,
Maria and Wendy
