Dear OLMC Parents,

Good afternoon! For the last few days, we have had teachers back in the building participating in in-services, and our time together has been grace-filled. It has been so good to be in-person and see everyone face-to-face again (behind masks, of course!) This year, OLMC School will be focusing on the theological virtue of hope, trusting in God and His loving plan for us. Our school motto for the year is taken from St. Paul’s letter to the Romans, “Rejoice in hope, be steadfast in trial, persevere in prayer.” (Rom 12:12) This call to be persistent in prayer and to find our joy in hope is so timely! We are surrendering our anxieties and concerns to the loving care of Christ who promises to take care of us always. 

Thankfully, we are ready to move forward with our Reopening Plan and open up our school doors to children next Wednesday. Before the first day of school, I wanted to send out some reminders:

  • Signing the Family Policy Guide Acknowledgement: If you have not yet gotten a chance to sign off on the Family Policy Guide, please do so sometime before August 12. This family form is due by 7 am Wednesday. Only one form per family is required.


Parent Reminders:
  • Family Contingency Plan for Childcare: In the event that your child needs to be picked up and/or immediately quarantined, you will need to have a plan for an assigned person to pick up the child. If that person is not already listed as an emergency contact in Powerschool, please email the office so that the person will be added.

  • Covid-19 Precautions:
  • Pre-screen children each day for Covid-19 symptoms. Please do not send children to school if they are sick or waiting for Covid-19 test results to be released. Of course, children should not be sent to school if a household member has Covid-19 or if the child has been identified as a close contact of an infected person.
  • Follow CDC recommendations regarding travel.
  • Contact the school if you have a child who tests positive.
  • Students have to wait 72 hours to return to school after having a fever (without using fever-reducing medication) regardless of whether or not they tested positive for Covid-19.

  • Practical Items: 
  • Please send your child to school each day with:
  • 2 masks with students’ names on them (no sayings on them)
  • A lunch, water bottle (not glass), napkins, utensils, cups, etc.

  • Optional items:
  • Personal hand sanitizer
  • Sunscreen. The children will most likely be outside more than they ever have been before. If you would like your child to wear sunscreen, please apply it before he/she comes to school.

The Indiana State Department of Health is continually updating their Back to School Parent Resources page. Recently, updated information has been posted on family guidance for isolation/quarantine and a Covid-19 screening tool that parents can easily use: https://www.coronavirus.in.gov/2400.htm

Also, just a quick reminder that we are limiting visitors to the building, and so we won’t be having any parents walk their children to their classrooms on the first day of school. Every teacher in our building will be “on duty” for the first 2 weeks of school and are more than happy to direct the children to their classrooms.

**please keep in mind that the effects of the pandemic shifts rapidly which make planning for certain events challenging. All dates and times are subject to change. We will communicate details as soon as possible.


Recess Helpers Needed:
Recess is a very important part of the day at an elementary school. We desperately need 1 additional parent (in addition to the classroom teachers that are assigned recess duty) on both Tuesdays & Fridays. The children do go outside every day unless it is raining or temps are below 15 degrees so it is not recommended that younger siblings tag along. The hours are from 11:00am to 12:25pm each day paid at $15.00 per day.

1st Day of School:
  • In an effort to limit the number of people in our building to maintain safe social distancing as best we can, parents will not be allowed to walk students to class the first day.
  • All teachers & staff will be outside or in the hallways assisting children with finding their way to class.

What you can do to prepare for the first day:
  • Pray as a family for all students/families/teachers/staff during these first few weeks of school. Refer to the prayer at the head of this newsletter.
  • Teach your child the name of their teacher & homeroom so they can tell us if they are asked.
  • Have a positive attitude about the return to school.
  • Have your child wear their mask for short periods at home.

Before & After School Care:
If your child will be riding a bus from a local before/after school care provider, please email your child's teacher and the school office (olmcschool@olmc1.org) and let us know which bus they are supposed to riding and which days.

7:15-7:45am Morning carpool dropoff. Click here to see carpool maps.
  • Have patience, it is a virtue!
  • Keep your phone/devices put away so your attention is on what is happening around you.
  • Pull all the way forward (do not stop short by KG rooms/Parish Hall)
  • Parents are to remain in your vehicle
  • Students should exit the vehicle to the left whenever possible.
  • If students exit vehicle on the right side, they should cross in front of your vehicle.
  • Do not pull around vehicles in front of you, wait for them to proceed forward.

10:45 Morning Kindergarten carpool pickup will be in front of school.
  • Remain in your vehicles, teachers will bring your children to you.

3:00pm. Parents should be in carpool for afternoon dismissal.
3:05pm. Late gate is locked.
  • If you arrive after the late gate is locked, please remain in your car until the late gate monitor unlocks the gate to allow you through.
3:05-3:15pm. Students dismissed.
3:20pm carpool dismissed & late gate opened.

Pre-ordered supply kits are available for pickup now in the school atrium. Doors are unlocked from 9am-3pm M-F until school starts on Aug 12.

Due to the current circumstances with Covid, in lieu of the traditional parent breakfast, OLMC is going to have a small treat for each family that will be available for pick up in the sports parking lot after each family drops off their child/children.

School lunch:
  • We will not have a hot lunch program (Campus Cuisine) for 1st and 2nd quarter.
  • Students will need to bring their own lunch and beverage to school each day. No beverages will be available for purchase.
  • Napkins/utensils are not provided. Please pack everything your child needs to eat their lunch.
  • Students will physically spread out more while they are eating lunch.
  • Students will have assigned seats in the cafeteria.

Safe & Sacred Protocol :
Safe & Sacred/Protocol Training: Everyone who works with young people and/or vulnerable adults shares the responsibility of creating safe environments. We are all charged with treating life with the respect and dignity given to each of us by our God.

Our policy at OLMC Parish & School, is for any adult working with children in any capacity at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School before, during or after the school day (including driving of the students to sporting events, girl scouts, boy scouts, etc.) is required to first complete both:

  1. The "Protecting Children in the 21st Century" Course and
  2. The Background check portion in the Safe & Sacred website.
