Dear OLMC Parents,

Now that the Christmas season has concluded, we have entered into the first week of Ordinary Time.  We look forward to all of the graces the Lord will send us during this season as we strive to grow in the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love.  Our next significant event at OLMC School will be Catholic Schools Week, and it is fast approaching.  This festive week will take place the first week of February, and members of the PTO and Catholic Identity Committee are working diligently to finalize this schedule.  I am happy to share that Friday, February 5 will be designated as Teacher Appreciation Day, and OLMC School will be having a planned 2-hour delay that morning to give teachers more time to catch up on their work. Teaching during a pandemic year has been quite a challenge for our educators, and this 2 hour delay will provide our devoted teachers with more time to plan, grade, and take care of our students in quarantine who are learning virtually. Please mark your calendars for this planned 2-hour late start on February 5.  More details about this celebratory week will be forthcoming,

Last Friday marked the end of the second quarter, and report cards will be sent home on Wednesday, January 20.  The students are finishing up the winter NWEA MAP tests at this time; these assessments are formative and mark the growth of students since the first quarter. 2nd quarter report cards will be sent home on Wednesday. MAP scores will be sent home at a later date.

Reflecting back on this current year, there have been many school events/activities that needed to take a pause due to the current pandemic.  The lunch program, field trips, and socials first come to mind.  OLMC School, however, will never postpone activities that touch the very heart of our school mission.  Sacramental opportunities are still available to our children.  Gratefully, the second grade will be receiving the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation for the first time on Saturday, January 23.  Students in grades 1-8 are still participating in an 8 am Mass once a week and faithfully adoring the Lord on each first Friday of the month.  I am thankful that our school is still able to fulfill Christ’s tender request to “Let the children come to me.” (Mt 19:14)

Each year, our teachers and School Council collaborate with the administration to create a School Improvement Plan.  Our 2020-21 plan is well underway, and I am delighted to say that COVID-19 has not paused its development!  Thanks to the generous assistance of our School Council, our OLMC strategic plan is currently being finalized.  Even in a pandemic, we remain committed to finding ways to continue to improve so we can better live out our school mission on a daily basis.  The administration is planning to schedule a time in February to present our plan to you, our parents, so we can share with you our future goals and vision for Our Lady of Mount Carmel School.  These are exciting times, and we are always moving forward in God’s grace and wisdom.  More details will be released regarding our strategic plan and goal-setting in the future.

I hope and pray that you enjoy this long weekend as a family.  May we continue to pray that the peace of Christ permeate the hearts of us all.  God bless you!

In His Peace,
Sister Maria Benedicta, O.P.

COVID Precautions:
We are grateful for everything that families are doing to help keep our school population healthy. Every family dynamic is unique so everyone's patience and cooperation is much appreciated as we navigate each situation. This really is a team effort between parents, students, teachers, nurse & the school office!

A few reminders we would like to highlight:
  • The best way for us to control the spread, is to keep all of your children home if anyone (parent, sibling, grandparent that lives with you, etc) in your household is symptomatic and there is reasonable concern that he/she might have Covid-19, Similarly, if a household member is being tested because he/she is symptomatic (not just for travel purposes, etc.), please keep your children home.

  • Healthy children who are quarantined because they are close contacts are expected to complete their work and submit it on a daily basis. Please contact the teachers to determine their expectations and due dates for student work.

  • If your quarantined child becomes symptomatic and is too sick to complete their work, please notify the teacher(s) and the school office so assignment due dates and attendance codes can be adjusted.

Other Reminders:
  • As always, we ask that your family monitors for symptoms each morning before you send your students to school. Here is a link to a screening tool for parents: https://www.coronavirus.in.gov/files/20_Parent%20screening%2010-22-20.pdf
  • If a student has a fever or has diarrhea/vomiting, he/she has to wait to return to school until the child is fever-free for 72 hours without fever-reducing medication or has not had diarrhea/vomiting for 72 hours.
  • Please call or email the administration or front office if you need guidance of whether or not to send your children to school.
  • OLMC School will continue to maintain 14-day quarantines for close contacts. We will not be using the shortened quarantined guidelines allowed by the CDC. A negative result on a Covid-19 test will not decrease the period of quarantine for a close contact.
  • If you have any children who have been identified as close contacts while on break and will need to be absent from school next week, please notify the office at attendance@olmc1.org. Thank you!
