A Christ-centered community,
provides excellence in education
to meet the needs of the whole child.
March 3, 2021
Dear OLMC Parents,

In this second week of Lent, we are grateful for the opportunity for our students to receive the Sacrament of Penance tomorrow.  This is the perfect time to examine our consciences and cleanse our souls from any sins that are drawing away from Our Lord so that we will be spiritually ready to rejoice with the Risen Christ at Easter.

Gratefully, our school is still faring well regarding Covid cases.  I am especially pleased to announce that as of today, our county is now in the blue category, the lowest color it could be assigned according to the county metrics.  Thank you for partnering with us for the last 8 months in following our safety protocols.  I hope and pray the number of positive Covid cases continues to decline in the following weeks.  The Hamilton County Health Department has been an immense support to me as a principal; this department faithfully sends me weekly updates and has always been available to answer my questions.  Recently, representatives of the health department have met with administrators and requested that we ask our school community to carefully consider their travel plans for Spring Break.  There is a chance that the number of Covid cases might increase significantly after Spring Break due to the prevalence of family travel.  Unfortunately, a surge of Covid positive cases could adversely affect the school’s plans for the spring, and I do not want to be placed in a position where I would have to cancel or postpone traditional spring events that are beloved by students, parents, and teachers alike.  If families are planning to get away for break, please keep in mind that local travel is definitely safer at this time than international travel.  Last year, I was so disheartened when we had so many iconic events and celebrations that needed to be either canceled or drastically modified; I pray that our celebrations this year will proceed as planned.  Thank you so much for your support in this area.  I appreciate it!

Hats off to all twenty-eight OLMC entrants who competed at the CYO Music Contest.
The CYO Music Contest was held on February 13th at Bishop Chatard High School. The contest was open to students in grades 4-12. All OLMC students who entered received a gold medal for their performance. Congratulations to the six OLMC students and one OLMC alumni student who not only received a gold medal but won the Most Outstanding Performance Awards in their categories.

The Most Outstanding Performance Award winners are:
Weston Twilla - 3rd Grade guitar solo
Katherine Kibler - 4th Grade piano solo
Luke Shrift - 5th Grade piano solo

Jeremiah Richardson and Luke Shrift - 5th Grade instrument duet
Kathryn Tiplick (alumni) - 9th Grade flute solo

What a delightful high note for the OLMC music students to begin 2021!
Reminders:
Masks: Please make sure your children have 2 masks with them at school each day. We have many children coming to the school nurse & office each morning because they have forgotten their masks at home. Every child should have a 2nd mask in their book bag in case the one they are wearing gets dirty or lost.

Outside recess: The weather in Indiana can change very quickly. All grades go outside for recess every day as long as the temperature is 15 degrees or warmer. Please make sure your children dress appropriately for the weather each day.
State of the School Address
Thank you to everyone for your input for our first State of School Parent Meeting on February 25.

Feel free to contact Sr. Maria Benedicta O.P. or Mr. Fletcher if you have any questions about the presentation.

COVID-19 Updates:
We have only had 1 new reported cases of Covid in the school community.

You are always welcome to check our school numbers on the Indiana Covid-19 Dashboard and Map. Click on the school tab. OLMC School updates our numbers each week.

Other important COVID-19 resources may be found on the Indiana Department of Health website.
Nurses Notes:
Allergy season is upon us now. If your child takes Claritin or Zyrtec, I would recommend starting now. God is giving us some great weather as we proceed through Lent.

We do still have the common cold and stomach bugs. Please remember that if your child has a fever (100 degrees or higher) or vomiting/diarrhea
our current school policy is for students to remain home from school until they are 72 hours symptom free.
Uniform Updates:
As many of you learned during the virtual parent meeting last Thursday, the administration has granted 1 more year of amnesty for the old logo on the school uniform.

The retired logo may be worn one final year during the 2021-2022 school year.

Our Spring Book Fair is going VIRTUAL this year.
We are partnering with Blue Ribbon Book Fair Company to offer excellent STEM and fiction books. The Book Fair begins on Monday, March 8 but you can preview the collection at:  https://read-ola.com/OLMC.

Thank you for supporting our book fair and helping us grow our school library!

Used Game and Book Drive:
We will be collecting gently used games and books Thursday March 11-Wednesday March 17. The OLMC teachers will have an opportunity to look through the items for use in their classrooms. On March 18 all books and games will be delivered to the Catholic Center for distribution to Indianapolis Catholic schools for use in classrooms and after school programs. There will be a collection box in the school atrium. (Please tape games shut so we don’t loose pieces in transit.). Contact Megan O’Connor with any questions, [email protected].
Lost & Found:
Spring brings fluctuating temperatures which leads to an increase in sweatshirts and jackets in the lost & found. The Lost & Found table is located in the Parish Hall and parents are welcome to come check it for lost items, just check in at the school office when you come.

Unclaimed items will be donated to the Merciful H.E.L.P. Center on March 31. We do look for names on items before donating them.
Smaller lost items are kept in the school office. If anything in this picture looks familiar, please come claim it!
GET READY FOR STATE TESTING:
ILEARN (grades 3-8) April 19- May 14
ILEARN is the State of Indiana’s standardized assessment that measures student achievement and growth according to Indiana Academic Standards for grades 3 – 8. The assessments will be the weeks of April 19 – May 14.  Your child’s teacher will let you know the days/dates your child will be testing. Attendance during these days is very important. Please make every attempt to schedule doctor and dentist appointments around the test dates.
Here are just a few tips for a good testing day:
  • Make sure students get a good night’s sleep. This is important every night!!!!
  • A good morning at home makes for a good morning at school.
  • Make sure your children eat a good healthy breakfast.
  • Talk to your children about the test. Remind them to give their best effort. This test is important, but too much stress can be a problem also.
  • Encourage your child to listen to the teacher for directions.
  • Encourage your child to think positively – they can do this!!!!
  • Smile and tell a funny joke – laughing is good for everyone.

IREAD3 (3rd Grade) March 8 - March 12:
The Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination (IREAD-3) assessment measures foundational reading standards to grade 3 students each spring. Based on the Indiana Academic Standards, IREAD-3 is a summative assessment that was developed in accordance with House Enrolled Act 1367. This assessment will be administered March 8 – March 12. Your child’ teacher will let you know the times your child will be testing. Attendance during these days is very important. Please make every attempt to schedule doctor and dentist appointments around these test dates.
