A Christ-centered community,
provides excellence in education
to meet the needs of the whole child.
September 2, 2020
Dear OLMC Families,

Good afternoon! Our blessings continue to flow in abundance this week as we move forward with our in-person learning. We recognize that every day we are able to learn in the classroom is a gift to the OLMC family. Both the teachers and the students are thoroughly enjoying the time they can be outside as they engage in their classes or eat their snacks. Fresh air and sunshine in a more relaxed environment is healthy for adults and children alike, and sometimes I ask myself, “Why didn’t we think about these practices before?” My eyes have been opened to more and more “silver linings” of the pandemic as the days pass. Our school’s motto for this year is “Rejoice in hope, be steadfast in trial, persevere in prayer” (Rm 12:12). Our hope is sustained by Christ’s promise that He will never leave us. Our Lord has shown His mercy and faithfulness in myriad ways, and at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, His goodness is manifested through the smiles of our children who come to school each day. They are happy to be back learning together with their friends and their teachers. What a gift we have been given to be able to maintain this community-based learning environment; we are grateful!

As of today, OLMC School has received zero reports of students and staff members with Covid-19. So many families have been taking extra precautions, and I am so thankful! We have noticed that the new policy that was released last Tuesday by the Indiana State Department of Health is increasing our number of student absences. More students are remaining out of school because a parent or sibling is exhibiting symptoms of Covid-19, and all household members of a symptomatic person are requested to quarantine unless he/she receives negative results from a Covid test or an alternate diagnosis from a medical provider. Thankfully, all of the Covid tests the students have taken have been negative. Students also seem to be suffering from allergies and colds at this time, and those symptoms can sometimes cross-over with Covid-19 symptoms. Just a reminder that the ISDH recently removed the runny/stuffy nose as a Covid symptom from the pre-screening list. More information about pre-screening and updates from the Indiana State Department of Health can be found on our school website; the complete list of Back-to-School Resources can be found on the ISDH website.

OLMC School staff is committed to providing asymptomatic and healthy quarantined students with the opportunity to complete schoolwork they missed that day. If you have any quarantined children at home, please reach out to their teachers to arrange for them to complete assignments through Google Classroom. Healthy students in quarantine are expected to keep up with their school work as if they were present at school; students who are sick in any way are expected to rest and fully recover. Sick students receive an excused absence and will have time to make-up missed work. Please see p.11 of our Family Policy Guide for more details. The school will work out a way with families for students to get the materials they need to work; please just call us and we will figure out a plan. If your entire family is being quarantined, we can be flexible and creative in developing a plan to get necessary materials to your children.

Lastly, on Friday we will be celebrating our 64th birthday as a school. This is yet another blessing for which to be thankful. In a spirit of celebration, the entire school will be having a Spirit Day in which students can come to school in school colors or Spirit Wear shirts and wear jeans or khaki pants. During lunch, students will receive a festive cupcake to enjoy. We look forward to celebrating our birthday together in style!

May the Lord continue to cultivate the virtue of hope in your hearts and the hearts of your children. “Let us hold unwaveringly to our confession that gives us hope, for he who made the promise is faithful” (Heb 10:23).

Blessings on your week!
Sister Maria Benedicta, O.P.

New Information from last week:
You can access updated resources on our Covid-19 Update page located on our school website. I ask that all parents read through these guidelines thoroughly to help you understand how the school is discerning particular cases at this time. There are many changes delineated in these documents, but here are just a few:

Pre-screening for Covid-19 Symptoms: Having a runny or stuffy nose is no longer considered to be one of the main symptoms to look for when pre-screening. Here is a new symptom list: Covid-19 Screening for Parents New!
  • Temperature 100.4 degrees F or higher when taken by mouth (OLMC policy is 100.0 degrees)
  • Sore throat
  • New uncontrolled cough that causes difficulty breathing (for students with chronic allergic/asthmatic cough, a change in their cough from baseline)
  • Diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal pain
  • New onset of severe headache, especially with a fever
  • Loss of taste or smell

When a student can return to school: New as of last Wednesday.
  • If a child exhibits Covid-19 symptoms, then the entire household should quarantine and none of the children should attend school. This is a significant change from our former guidelines that allowed non-symptomatic siblings to attend school. With these new guidelines, the other siblings must stay home from school as well, regardless of whether they attend OLMC or a different school.
  • If a child gets sick during school and exhibits Covid-19 symptoms, all of the siblings must also go home with the child. The symptomatic child and siblings must remain at home until test results come back.
  • If a child gets tested and receives a negative test result, siblings can return to school right away as long as they are not symptomatic and have not been exposed to a person infected with Covid-19. The symptomatic child with a negative test result can return to school as long as he/she has been fever-free for 72 hours without fever-reducing medication, symptoms have improved, and he/she has not been recently exposed to a person infected with Covid-19.
  • Of course, if a child gets tested and receives a positive result, the policy has always been in place that the infected child needs to isolate for at least 10 days and the other household members must quarantine for 14 days. This is just general information; please read through the resources on our school page for exact details on isolation and quarantine directives.
OLMC Sports is Back!
