Covenant Corner: Keep OM Clean and Green!

The do’s and don’ts of keeping Oakland Mills clean and green!

DO:

  • Keep your sidewalk and driveway apron area clean! Grass clippings can be slippery. And those Sweet Gum Tree Balls can be tricky to navigate.
  • Did you know the grass strip between your sidewalk and the street is your responsibility too? This includes but is not limited to mowing, seeding, and removal of grass clippings and general yard debris.
  • Prune your trees and bushes for you and your neighbors.
  • Trim branches that overhang the sidewalk.
  • Keeping bushes and trees trimmed away from your house and windows helps to prevent mildew growth and wear on your siding. Keeping them trimmed can also help prevent pests and wildlife from getting into and/or damaging your house, roof, downspouts, and more.
  • Yard waste should be put out for curbside collection. Don’t know your pick-up day? You can find it here https://www.howardcountymd.gov/curbsidecollections
  • Store your trash, recycling, and compost containers out of sight. Howard County code states items must be placed out after 6 p.m. the day before collection or before 6 a.m. the day of collection.

DON’T:

  • Blow your yard debris into the street.
  • Use Open Space (or your own wooded yard) for collecting yard debris.
  • Make changes to the exterior of your house (color, siding, decks, patios, etc.) without checking to see if an Exterior Alterations Application is needed. *Hint, it probably is, and we are more than happy to help you with it!

Gateway Master Plan Public Draft: Provide Your Feedback!

Gateway’s Master Plan Draft is Ready for Review

The Department of Planning & Zoning (DPZ) has released the transformational Gateway Master Plan Public Draft for review.

Building on the bold direction of the County’s General Plan, HoCo By Design, this initiative charts an ambitious path to reimagine Gateway as a leading innovation district. The Gateway Master Plan Public Draft layouts out a clear, action-focused strategy to spark research, support startups, and drive inclusive economic growth.

See how the plan has evolved and give us your feedback about what you would like or suggest what could be improved.

The public comment period is open now thru Tuesday, July 8th at 11:59pm. Share your feedback via the comment form on DPZ's website!

Community EV Charging Grants

Townhome or condo communities can now apply for financial support to add electric vehicle (EV) charging to community parking lots. Howard County’s Office of Community Sustainability (OCS) has launched “Community Charging Connections,” a new pilot program that will reimburse selected non-profit townhome or condo community associations up to $10,000 for costs associated with EV charger installations.

The program aims to address barriers to EV charging faced by townhome and condo communities that lack private garages and/or driveways. Program participants will be asked to provide feedback about the County’s permitting and approval process so that improvements can be made.

To learn more about the program and apply, please visit the Community Charging Connections webpage. Applications are due by July 31, 2025.

Beware of Door-to-door Sales Scams

Spring brings sales directly to your door. Always be wary of storm chasers, contractors with “extra” supplies, and solicitors who are “doing work in your neighborhood.” Everyone who knocks on your door to sell something should have a registration ID issued by the Office of Consumer Protection (OCP). If they can’t show you that license, contact the OCP immediately. To see what the license looks like, visit OCP’s “Peddling & Soliciting” website. Also see this info sheet on safely planning and executing your next home improvement project.

Governor Moore announced expanded access to more affordable prescription drugs through an innovative partnership with SIRUM and Good Pill Pharmacy. Most prescriptions from Good Pill are available for $2 per month. To access the Good Pill pharmacy, Marylanders simply need to check the list of available medications, complete a one-time registration, and ask their health care provider to send their prescription to Good Pill. Prescriptions are typically available in 90 day supplies and are delivered to the patient’s home within 5-7 days". To read the complete press release from the Governor, click HERE.
