Learn How To Become a       
Weed Warrior
Help keep Columbia beautiful by learning how to become a Weed Warrior, removing non-native
invasive plant species in our community.

CA and HCC will host two Weed Warrior Program Certified Leader training sessions in July.  The two-class course will be held on Sun. July 8, a classroom session in HCC's Health Science Building, room 100, and Sun. July 29, a field session meeting at HCC's Arboretum, next to the Athletic & Fitness Center.  Both classes will be held from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

You must complete both sessions to receive certification.  If you can only attend one of these sessions, you can complete the certification process
the during the next available session.

OM's BIG Parade
TOMORROW!
Wednesday July 4th,
10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

Join your neighbors in a fun parade to celebrate the 4th of July! Meet up at the Oakland Mills Village Center at 9:45 am. Bring your stroller, your wagon or just yourself and walk along the sidewalks and paths. Most importantly, decorate whatever you are bringing to celebrate all who make up the village of Oakland Mills.
 
Watermelon and cookies at the Other Barn for all who participate!

Bike with a Cop
Thursday, August 16th, 5:00 p.m.

Meet in front of the police trailer

Kids ages 5-11 and their parents are invited to bike the pathways of Oakland Mills with officers from HCPD's Pathway Patrol Section. A brief bicycle safety lesson will be given prior to the ride.  Children ages 9 and under MUST be accompanied by an adult and helmets MUST be worn.

Oakland Mills Middle School, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Weekend Warrior Snack Packs offers youth ages 18 and younger a FREE bag of snacks to provide nutrition over the weekend during the summer months. Student must be present in order to receive snack pack. Snack Packs available while supplies last.
Adv Summer Mobile Rec Program with Howard County Police 
Two convenient local locations!
  • Talbott Springs Community Center, Tuesdays, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. through July 31.
  • Blandair Park, Fridays, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. through August 3.
School Resource Officers will be on location, ready  to play basketball, baseball, flag football, Xbox or just hang. No need to register. Kids can drop in any time and must be able to be on their own.  Attendees should bring their own food and beverage.  
 
On Tuesdays at Talbott Springs, the program includes a free swim at the Talbott Springs Pool from 12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Only those attending the program can participate in the free swim. Make sure to bring a swimsuit and towel!

100 Deadliest Days for Teen Drivers  
The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is known as the 100 deadliest days for teen drivers. During this time in 2016, more than 1,050 people were killed in crashes involving teen drivers.

HC DrugFree encourages you to talk with the inexperienced drivers in your life about safe driving habits including not driving or riding with others after any substance use.

Naloxone is a prescription medication that reverses an opioid overdose by restoring breathing. With naloxone on hand, you will be equipped to respond and prevent death from an overdose. Obtain free naloxone medication and learn to save a life through Howard County Health Department's Overdose Response Program. Community Companion Program
Howard County General Hospital's Member Care Support Network (MCSN) offers free non-medical support services to enrolled individuals who are experiencing a health need such as a hospitalization. Members of this network may be paired with volunteer Community Companions, who can provide support services as transportation, assistance with light housekeeping and companionship.

To participate in the Member Care Support Network individuals must:
- Be 18 years or older
- Live or worship in Howard County, MD
- Have temporary non-medical support needs
- Complete a MCSN registration form

Exploring Columbia on Foot 
Columbia Association's (CA) series of outdoor walks explores the lakes, streams, woodlands and wildlife of Columbia. Each walk is about two miles long, with four to five stops along the way. Registration is not required.

The walks are led by award-winning environmental author Ned Tillman, who guides discussions on the nature, history and future of these wonderful outdoor settings, including the plans for them and challenges they may face in the near future. 
 
All walks begin at 10 a.m. The schedule includes:

Free Soil Analysis
Columbia Association will provide a FREE soil analysis for residents. A soil analysis can indicate what levels of chemicals and minerals are present in your lawn, and what type of nutrients may need to be added. Soil collection bags are available at The Other Barn and can be returned there. The samples are then analyzed and the results are sent to you by email.

Both parties will be held at the Locust Park Pool in the village of Long Reach ( 8995 Lambkin Lane). Registration is required for this free event.
