OMEA All State Elementary Choir Returns!
All State Elementary Choir is back for 2023! This honor ensemble will rehearse and perform all on January 14th, the Saturday of the All State and Conference weekend.

There is no audition for the elementary choir - simply a nomination by the teacher. Teachers nominate only students with "unchanged treble voices"
Teachers may nominate up to 15 students per school, we can not guarantee that all will be placed but in recent history we have placed 4-5 singers per school. When you complete your students' applications through Opus, you must designate a ranking/order for your students to indicate your first, second, etc. nominations.

All students and their families must agree that, if selected, they will commit to the event, be able to pay the registration fee by the November deadline.
Parents will be allowed access to Opus to complete the Registration and payment process (Teachers can choose to complete this step if preferred)

Please reach out to ensemble managers John Hillan-Payne or Allison Hedgepeth if you have any questions regarding this ensemble.

Dear Middle and High School Choral Directors,

Our Fall Workshop is upon us. You do not want to miss it! It is being held this year on our state wide in service day, Friday, October 14th from 9AM-4PM at Lakeridge High School in Lake Oswego. There are engaging opportunities for all!

Middle School Honor Choir

Nominate middle school students who are ready for a one-day Honor Choir experience. Students will be led by the amazing Sandy Babb (OSU) for a day of choral singing and community building. Students who attend the ACDA Honor Choir are encouraged to return as vocal leaders in their home school choirs. Please plan to attend or send a group chaperone if you are sending students, especially if that number is more than 5 from your school(s).

Middle school educators will have the opportunity to meet after lunch for a middle school focus session born out of the ideas of our fabulous members at the ACDA Summer Workshop. We will be sharing ideas and a few select pieces which focus on introducing harmony to your choirs of varying skill levels.

High School Choral Leadership Workshop directed by Wallace Long

Nominate your section leaders, an SATB quartet or octet for this fantastic opportunity! These singers will learn three pieces and gain more confidence to lead by example. Teachers are strongly encouraged to attend and sing with their students. These students will perform at the end of the day concert.

High School Skill Building Sight-reading Choir directed by Anna Rikki, Southridge High School and Kristen Caldwell, Jesuit High School

Nominate students that will benefit from learning strategies to begin sight reading. Students will gain more confidence with using solfège syllables and a counting system after engaging activities led by the clinicians. These students will perform at the end of the day concert.

NAfME Divisive Concepts Town Hall Meeting
In this town hall, National Executive Board member Karen Salvador will briefly present information on divisive concepts laws and describe a proposed format for reporting information on divisive concepts laws to MEAs and members. The report structure will be sectioned out to include information on the laws and how other professional organizations are responding, and information and resources from NAfME member experts regarding culturally responsive pedagogy, repertoire diversity, social and emotional learning in music, teacher recruitment and retention, and navigating local and state policies.

After this brief presentation, Karen, NAfME President Scott Sheehan, NAfME Immediate Past President and Chair of the Equity Committee Mackie Spradley, and NAfME Executive Director Chris Woodside will open the floor to listen to member responses regarding this report. The intent of this NAfME Town Hall on Divisive Concepts Laws is aimed at identifying and communicating facts and views surrounding these concepts. We will try to answer questions, and we invite stories of experiences.
