Band & Orchestra Adjudication Workshop
|
|
This workshop offers training in the use of the OBDA/OSAA Band and Orchestra Evaluation System, with the expressed purpose of recertifying adjudicators that hold or have held OBDA certification. This workshop is not the entry level workshop that includes explanation of the forms and system of the adjudication process and is not intended for participants that have not attended a previous workshop.
Attendees will spend time focusing on analysis, giving instructional comments, and calibrating scores to the rubric prior to taking the assessment to obtain certification.
Participation is open to any interested band/orchestra teacher or director that is seeking to renew their certification or desires to add an additional endorsement (i.e., a certified band director wishing to become certified as an orchestra adjudicator).
If room allows, participation may be granted to attendees that wish to change the level of their current endorsement or who have attended a previous workshop but have yet to acquire certification.
Contact OBDA Committee Chairs with further questions.

Oregon, Idaho and Washington choral educators:
Registration is now open for the Oregon Adjudication Workshop. Whether you are interested in gaining certification as an OSAA/OMEA/ACDA adjudicator, needing to re-certify (Oregon rules required recertification every 5 years), or would just like to audit the workshop to learn more about Oregon’s unique rubric and judging process, you are welcome to join us on Thursday, January 12, 2023, 9:00am-4:00pm at the Graduate Hotel, Eugene, Oregon. The address for “The Graduate Hotel” is 66 E. 6th Ave., Eugene, OR 97401.

Anyone who needs to renew their certification and does NOT attend this meeting will be removed from the certified adjudicator list.
Two more important notes…

Recruiting a Teacher Leader from the Northwest Division for NAfME's Connected Arts Network Grant Project
|
|
NAfME is currently actively recruiting a PreK-12 teacher from one of the Northwest Division states to be part of a small group of teacher leaders for this national project.
Selected teacher leaders receive a modest stipend and ongoing national-level training and support on leadership, facilitating professional learning communities (PLCs), standards-based teaching/learning, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access (DEIA), the core themes of the grant. Starting later next year, the teacher leader who is selected will lead their own PLC, each with ten teachers.
We are looking for PreK-12 public school teachers with proven leadership qualities and strong knowledge, skills, and/or experience in the areas of PLCs, SEL, DEIA, teacher leadership, and standards-based music education.
Candidates need to demonstrate a very strong interest in the core themes of the program and willingness to participate in this multi-year CAN grant project, which includes collaboration with music educators nationwide and with other teacher leaders and NAfME’s counterparts in the areas of visual arts, dance, and theater.
The application deadline is December 15. In addition, the leading candidates will go through a robust interview process.

2023 NAfME Music in Our Schools Month
|
|
Celebrate Music In Our Schools Month® in your school and community!
Celebrate the 2022–2023 school year’s theme
NAfME President Scott R. Sheehan has designated "Music Is All of Us" as this school year’s Music In Our Schools Month® (MIOSM®) theme. Share how this theme resonates with you, your students, your school, and your community as we celebrate the 38th annual Music In Our Schools Month this March.
Advocate for Music Education
As we prepare to meet with elected officials this spring, please continue to submit your responses to the NAMM/NAfME survey on federal funding for music education. The deadline to take this survey is December 9, 2022. The survey asks questions about the use of funds under Titles I, II, and IV-A under the Every Student Succeeds Act and the emergency relief funding to help schools recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Music educators should consult with district-level staff who oversee these programs and are knowledgeable about district-wide K–12 music and arts instruction. Did your school’s music program receive federal funds to support your music education program? Take the survey.
Lesson Plans
New lesson plans are now available for kindergarten and grades 2 and 4. Past lessons are available for kindergarten and grades 1–5 without charge to teachers for their use during MIOSM and beyond. All currently available lessons are copyright ©2022 by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). View available lesson plans.
Concert Program Inserts
Concert program inserts for your concerts and other events are now available to download. Share how your community can support music education.
Sample Proclamation and Resolution
Encourage your state’s governor to issue a Proclamation and your school board, superintendent, local government, and PTA/PTO to issue a resolution declaring March as Music In Our Schools Month®. Use the following sample proclamation and resolution.
These resources will be available in the coming months:
· MIOSM merchandise will be available for purchase this winter, including pencils, posters, stickers, and buttons.
· Change your profile picture for the month of March! Downloadable graphics with the MIOSM logo for Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram will be available later this school year.
· Your MIOSM Chairperson is your main point of contact for MIOSM celebrations, with the goal of involving students, administrators, parents, civic groups, and community members.
Please contact nafme@nafme.org if you have further questions. And stay tuned for more updates and resources about Music In Our Schools Month!

Research Study—Grade 12 Students’ Intentions to Persist in Music Beyond High School using Expectancy-Value Theory of Motivation
Dear Secondary Music Educator,
My name is Cameron Siegal and I am a music education PhD candidate at the University of Oregon. I am currently recruiting participants for a research study examining grade 12 students’ intentions to persist in music beyond high school graduation using expectancy-value theory of motivation. This study has the potential to provide insight that will allow music educators to support students more effectively in music—both in high school and after graduation.
To this end, I am requesting your help in distributing a brief questionnaire to any grade 12 student who participates in band, orchestra, or choir. The online questionnaire takes roughly 15 minutes to complete and can be completed on a smartphone or computer at school or home. Participants will remain anonymous. The University of Oregon Institutional Review Board has approved this study.
Would you please distribute the information pasted below to all grade 12 students who participate in band, orchestra, or choir? You can reach me at csiegal@uoregon.edu with any questions. Thanks in advance for your support of this study which can support lifelong musical involvement. Please feel free to share this information with other secondary music educators. Your assistance will amplify the voices of Oregon’s students.
Sincerely,
Cameron Siegal
