2025 "If I Were Mayor..." Essay Winners Announced

The Mayors’ Council of Oklahoma (MCO) and the Oklahoma Municipal League (OML) recently announced the 2025 winners of the annual “If I Were Mayor” essay contest.

This year, the Potts Family Foundation partnered with OML on the annual essay contest and they generously provided a $250 stipend to the teacher of the winning student.

The essay contest provides an opportunity for 8th grade students from across Oklahoma to engage with their communities.  The MCO asks that the Mayors in each community reach out to their 8th grade students to discuss the role that a Mayor has in municipal government, and the vital role that they have in leading a community.

The 2025 Winners are:

1st Place – Jarrod McCary, Wright City Junior High

2nd Place – Josiah Gilbert-Byers, Cheyenne Middle School

3rd Place – Ryder Drennan, Alex Middle School

Jarrod’s teacher, Mrs. Edna Ruth Turner received a $250 stipend from the Potts Family Foundation.

OML Regional Council Meetings

The OML Regional Councils will serve as an Advisory Board to the OML Board of Directors, and will play an important role in our Legislative Efforts. OML wants to have more representation from all of our cities and towns across the State, and to have our members more involved with OML.  


The Next Regional Council Meetings:

Region 2 Drumright - March 7th, 10:30 am - 2:00 pm

Region 4 Lawton - March 14th, 10:30 am - 2:00 pm

Region 6 Hochatown - May 16th, 10:30 am - 2:00 pm

New Officials Institutes for 2025

Next Event March 13th - Lawton

The NOI teaches the statutorily required topics such as Municipal Budget Requirements, the Oklahoma Open Meetings Act, the Oklahoma Open Records Act, Ethics, Procedures for Conducting Meetings, Conflicts of Interest, and Purchasing Procedures.


State law requires each newly elected official or anyone appointed for the first time as an officer of a municipality to attend an institute for municipal officials The statute is codified at Title 11 O.S., Section 8-114.


The Oklahoma Municipal League is certified by the Department of Career and Technology as a trainer to implement this Act.

The NOI offers 7 hours of General Education Credit and .5 hours ethics through the CLE program.

OWRB Offers Levee Safety Training - April 16th

Experts from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will provide an overview of the ten potential failure modes during levee floods, along with remedial measures, such as sandbag filling and placement. The training will also cover a case study on a collapsed culvert and best practices for managing sand boils.

Tribal Municipal Symposium May 15th, Hochatown

The Tribal Municipal Symposium was established to provide a forum in which ideas concerning common municipal issues could be exchanged amongst peers in a community building environment. It is our goal that through building communication streams, unity, and combining shared resources, an enhanced commonality between tribes and municipalities will be created. There is much more that unites us than divides us and the best way to unite is through communication and establishing a shared vision. 


The Oklahoma Municipal League will be hosting these events throughout the State, and we invite you to attend to hear from both tribal leaders and municipal officials as we work together to find solutions that affect all Oklahomans.
