OMRI Updates Standards Manuals

OMRI has revised the OMRI Mexico Standards Manual© for review to the Mexico Organic Products Law (LPO) regulations, the OMRI Canada Standards Manual©  for review to the Canada Organic Regime (COR) standards, and the OMRI Generic Materials List© (GML) for review to the National Organic Program (NOP) regulations. 


All revisions are effective June 7, 2023.


Summary of changes: 


OMRI Mexico Standards Manual 

  • Chlorine dioxide starting materials (Class PS): Created a new category with the restriction that sodium chlorite may be used to generate chlorine dioxide. 
  • Amino Acids (Class CF, CT): Amended the category to clarify that the uses on Annex 1 Table 1 are not restrictive, and as such, amino acids can be used as a nutrient source and not only as plant regulators and chelating agents as the category previously stated.

OMRI Canada Standards Manual 

  • Insect frass (Class CF), Insect frass, processed (Class CF): Created new categories to clarify that insect frass should be considered the same as “animal manure” and is required to be from organic insects if commercially available. 
  • Compost Feedstocks (Class CF): Amended the category to specify that insect frass, similar to animal manure, may be composted, as clarified by SIC response 548.1

OMRI Generic Materials List 

  • Agricultural Ingredients (Class PA): Amended the category to clarify that non-organic agricultural ingredients not listed at §205.606 may only be used on products labeled “Made with Organic (specified ingredient(s)).” 


This revision was also made to other categories in the PA use class, including: Algae; Beeswax; Black Currant Juice Color; Blueberry Juice Color; Carrot Juice Color; Casein; Cherry Juice Color; Chia (Salvia hispanica L.); Dillweed Oil; Egg White (Albumen); Sherry; Sweet Potato Starch; Tannins; Turkish Bay Leaves; Turmeric Extract Color; Vegetable Oils; Whey Protein Concentrate.

The search feature at OMRI.org has also been updated with the latest information. 


OMRI will be conducting Limited Re-Reviews of listed products impacted by these changes and issuing new certificates as appropriate. Affected suppliers will be notified within 60 days from when a Limited Re-Review is initiated. More information about the Limited Re-Review process is provided in §2.10.1 of the OMRI Policy Manual©. If you have a product that you would like to have listed in one of the new categories, you are welcome to submit a product change or new product application.
