Snow Sanctuary
God thunders wondrously with his voice;
he does great things that we cannot comprehend.
For to the snow he says, ‘Fall on the earth.’
From its chamber comes the whirlwind
and cold from the scattering winds.
By the breath of God ice is given,
and the broad waters are frozen fast.
(Job: 37:5-6, 9-10)
My favorite season is winter - but only if there's snow. For many people, winter is a mix of anxiety and frustration: worries about driving, rearranging cancelled plans, the headache and backbreak of shoveling snow...
But, there's just something quietly holy during a good snowfall. One minute, the world is busy and loud - filled with to-do lists and errands to run and appointments to keep. And the next snowy moment in time, things slow down as the world is wrapped in white, harsh edges softened by a crystalline blanket. Snow has a way of pressing pause on our schedules, gifting us with time to spend on indoor hobbies or outdoor memories of sledding and creating snowmen.
Snowfall turns our attention back to the simple beauty of creation. Step outside for a winter hike or a moment on your porch, and your soul will lift in awe at the silent beauty, the hush of snowflakes falling, familiar trees coated in crystal. In moments like these, many people say they feel closer to God; nature has a way of preaching without words.
Our worship this Sunday will be online only - virtual Morning Prayer at 10:00 on our Facebook page and YouTube channel (links at the top of this e-news). While we'll miss being together in person, I hope you'll see this as an invitation wot worship a different way: to rest; to breathe; to notice the beauty right outside your windows.
Blessings,
Rev Jill
