California Department of Aging -Success Story

ONEgeneration's Los Angeles County Meal Program was highlighted on the state of California Department of Aging's website as an Older Californians Nutrition Program 2026 Success Story. Senior Center Member of the Month

When Ana Gamboa first connected with OSEC, it was through a workshop that sparked her curiosity. A little over a year later, she has become a familiar presence who lights up the center with her positivity, humor, and kindness. Ana was born and raised in El Salvador and then moved to Indiana to attend Purdue University where she majored in psychology and studied computer programming. Ana finds a lot of enjoyment in listening to people and helping them feel better about the things going on in their lives, often through humor and laughter. “I really enjoy making people laugh. You can’t laugh and stay stressed at the same time.”

Ana has worn many hats throughout her life and feels grateful to have had jobs that she really loved. After graduating from college, she moved back to El Salvador and dove into her passions for people and math, working as a preschool teacher and math tutor for four years. She then moved to California and worked as a computer programmer for 30 years. After this, she worked as an employment specialist for 10 years. Now retired, she jokes, “I wake up every morning with nothing to do and go to bed every night with it only half done.” In her retirement, Ana volunteers as a HAM radio operator with LA County Disaster Communications Service and helps connect community members to valuable resources and educational opportunities, including connecting OSEC with a CHP-led seminar on safe driving for older adults.

Ana considers herself extremely lucky to have met some very interesting people in her lifetime. When asked about some of the interesting people she has met, Ana said that her mother stands out the most. Her mother, Ana Isabel, lived until she was 102 ½ years old. Ana joked, “And yes, the half really counts.” Ana recalls her mother dancing at her brother’s birthday about a week before she passed and was still “sharp as a tack.” Her mother taught her a lot about life and the importance of having empathy and compassion for other people. She remembers how her mother would gently challenge her perspective: “This person did this, this, and this. But do you know why?” Through her mother, Ana learned to look beyond surface actions and instead, understand people within the context of their lives and their struggles. In Ana’s words, her mother’s compassion had no limits. Ana’s sister and brother are also extraordinary and compassionate people, carrying forward their mother’s kindness and positivity.

When asked if she has any advice for others, Ana took a moment for reflection and said, “One thing that I think of, is to look for ways to make things better for someone else. It doesn’t require a lot of money. It just requires small things—opening a door, smiling at someone, telling someone something nice. There is always something we can do to make the world a little better for the people around us.” Ana believes in the power of positivity and demonstrates it every day she is at the center.

Ana recently started volunteering at OSEC, helping when needed, to facilitate the discussion group, “Let’s Talk Positive Events” on Fridays from 1:00-2:30pm.

In Gratitude

On the Move Riders Club

A big thank you to Metro Los Angeles On the Move Riders Club travel buddies Mika and Marcy for planning and leading a wonderful trip for members of the ONEgeneration Wilkinson Senior Center! Our group enjoyed exploring Campo de Cahuenga and taking a walk through Universal City Walk, followed by a fun lunch at Shakey’s Pizza. What a fantastic day of learning, walking, and connecting!

All for Kids & LACMH

Congratulations to the kinship caregivers in the Grandparents As Parents Program at ONEgeneration who completed a series of educational classes focused on mental health and wellness for themselves and their families. These classes were offered during our Los Angeles support group and provided valuable tools and support for caregivers.

Thank you to our partners All For Kids and the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health for helping make these classes possible and for presenting certificates to these dedicated caregivers.

St. Patrick's Day Dance Sponsors and Volunteers

St. Patrick’s Day was celebrated at Wilkinson Senior Center, we had California State University, Northridge Students, Tierra del Sol Foundation, staff, and other volunteers to make it a great success. People danced to DJ Mark. Refreshments provided by our Sponsors Julie Powers from Mission Community Hospital, and Lisa Crawford of Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield and Laura from Blue Shield of California - we appreciate their generous support.

Food Pantry Volunteers

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped at last month’s Food Pantry day at our Wilkinson Senior Center in Northridge. Over 80 older adults were given multiple bags of food including fresh produce, frozen meat and eggs. We truly appreciate your hard work and dedication to our community.

Blue Shield of California

The March Birthday Celebration at ONEgeneration’s Wilkinson Senior Center was filled with laughter, games, and plenty of sweet treats! Guests enjoyed cupcakes, cookies, and great company while celebrating together. The festivities were sponsored by Blue Shield of California and hosted by our wonderful volunteer, Yvette, who helped make the event extra special. A highlight of the day was introducing a new chocolate strawberry flavored cream for coffee, and it was a big hit with everyone! Thank you Blue Shield and Yvette!

Grandparents As Parents

Advocating for kinship families at the Capitol

ONEgeneration's Director of our Grandparents As Parents (GAP) program was proud to attend this year’s Caregiver Day at the Capitol alongside dedicated advocates, including Jenn Rexroad and partners from across the state. This important event, sponsored by Alliance for Children's Rights and California Alliance of Caregivers, brings caregivers and advocates together to learn about policies impacting child welfare and to elevate their voices with decision-makers.

During the day, we had the opportunity to meet with Senator Roger Niello and Assemblymember Patrick Ahrens to discuss issues affecting youth in foster care and the kinship caregivers who support them.

Caregiver Day at the Capitol is a powerful reminder that meaningful change happens when we come together, share our experiences, and advocate for the needs of our community. We are grateful to stand alongside so many passionate leaders working to create a better future for children and families.

Another wonderful evening with our kinship families! The Grandparents As Parents program at ONEgeneration recently hosted a Family Game Night in Santa Clarita for our kinship families. It was a fun-filled evening where families gathered to play games, enjoy snacks, laugh together, and connect with one another.

Events like this remind us how important it is to create space for our families to build relationships, share experiences, and strengthen their support network. We love being able to bring our GAP kinship families together and continue growing this amazing community.

Thank you to all the families who joined us—we can’t wait for the next one!

Expert Article by Paul Davis

Paul Davis, Paul Davis Insurance Services, Inc.

Why are Medicare supplement plan rates increasing so significantly?

We still believe that Medicare supplement plans are the preferred plan to be on if/when you have a significant health event. Nothing else gives you unfettered access to every hospital in the US and about 98% of the physicians without having to get an insurance company’s approval.

We are in a phase of Medicare supplement rate increases. We see rate increase this year of over 10%. This is the 3rd year in a row for double digit rate hikes.

This article is primarily focused on plans for California.

First, you should know that most Medicare supplement plans have 2 components that cause the rates to rise:

1.      As you get older your rates increase. This is true with most plans in the marketplace. Some carriers stop raising rates based on age changes. UHC stops at age 78. Anthem California stops at age 81. Blue Shield of California 84.

2.     Medicare supplement plans also have across the board rate increases. Typically, yearly. Anthem changes rates March 1. United Health changes June 1 and Blue Shield July 1.

In past years we saw total rate increases of 3-5%. For each of the last 3 years we have seen rate increase of 10-15% (when you add the 2 above components together).

If you are new to Medicare, you typically get a new to Medicare discount that lasts for 12 months. We get lots of calls from clients that forget about this and get hit with an age rate increase, the across-the-board increase and loss of their new to Medicare discount.

Why are Medicare rates increasing so much now? There are several factors in this perfect storm.

1.     Many procedures are now being done on an outpatient basis rather than inpatient. This dramatically increases the cost for Medicare supplement plans as they have a 20% share of cost with no maximum under Part B, whereas under Part A (in patient hospitalization) their maximum exposure was around $1700. Think knee or hip replacement.

2.     Part B drugs. Some very expensive therapies involve Part B drugs that are injected in a doctors’ office of infusion clinic. These are injections, infusions and formulated biologics. These sometimes yield dramatic results but are very costly. Think eye injections for macular degeneration or Prolia for bone loss.

3.     Covid A. We are still seeing the affects of Covid in the marketplace. Lots of people skipped their routine and other visits during Covid and are still catching up.

Are your heating and cooling bills higher than you’d like?

If your home feels too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter, it may be time to think about a new heating and cooling system.

ONEgeneration can help you apply for rebates that can lower the cost and help you save money.

What is a heat pump?

A heat pump is an all-in-one system that keeps your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Instead of making heat, it moves heat — which uses less energy and can lower your utility bills.

Good news!

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is offering rebates of $2,500 per ton for new heat pump heating and cooling systems. ONEgeneration can help you understand the program and apply.

For more information contact Juana Torres at jtorres@onegeneration.org or call 818-708-6603.

ONEgeneration's Grandparents As Parents Program

ONEgeneration’s Grandparents As Parents (GAP) program has launched an initiative focused on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) supported by a grant from Cedars-Sinai. This program provides screenings, resources, and tools to support caregivers and children impacted by ACEs. As part of this effort, GAP publishes a monthly newsletter for caregivers and individuals who have experienced ACEs themselves or are raising children affected by them. This newsletter includes valuable information relevant to many and is shared here for the benefit of all.

Water Getting Along With Another

a poem by Norman Molesko

In my mind, in my head,

there should be a spontaneous plan,

an active goal, a labor of care,

to get along with another soul.

I need to realize and accept that

some plants need water day after day.

Some folks need to receive in some way

an expression, an exchange

of tenderness, of kindness,

each and every day.

In doing for myself,

I do for others.

In doing for others,

I do for myself.

I need to remember this

and no longer forget,

 to offer to another niceties

when it is apropos.
