Encino Farmers Market
With summer in full swing the market is bursting with a wide variety of delicious stone fruit. Circle K Farms carries a tasty Summer Flame or, Henry Peach that works perfectly in a pie or crumble. Old River Farm is back at the market and they have a nice array of grapes and melons. Vision Sprouts is a local company that sells sprouted nuts, seeds and butters. Sprouted nuts are easier to digest because the soaking process releases their enzyme inhibitors and allows you to get the full nutritional value. You can find Vision Sprouts in the food section of our Encino Farmers Market.
Carole - Market Manager

The Encino Market accepts EBT/CAL Fresh (see below) and WIC at the main gate.
The Market is open Sundays 8 am to 1 pm and all proceeds benefit
ONEgeneration's Senior Services.

Dr. David Stern's Expert Corner: O steoporosis
Last month, I wrote about osteoporosis, a condition that results in 1.5 million fractures per year. While the vast majority of those fractures occur in postmenopausal women, osteoporosis is an important, yet often overlooked problem in men. An estimated one to two million men in the United States have osteoporosis. As in women, the risk of fracture in men increases with age. A significant difference is that peak incidence of fracture occurs about ten years later in men than in women. Although the lifetime risk of hip fracture is lower in men than in women, men are twice as likely to die after a hip fracture.

Because men have larger skeletons, bone loss starts later and progresses more slowly than in women. Men in their fifties do not experience the rapid loss of bone mass that women do, in
the years following menopause. By age 65 or 70, however, men and women lose bone mass at the same rate as the absorption of calcium, an essential nutrient for bone health throughout
life, decreases in both sexes. Excessive bone loss causes bone to become fragile, therefore more likely to fracture. The incidence of hip fracture increases substantially after the age of 70 years. Additional risk factors for osteoporosis in men include low body weight, physical inactivity, corticosteroid use, androgen deprivation therapy (e.g. for prostate cancer), hypogonadism (low testosterone levels), smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, COPD, low calcium intake, and vitamin D deficiency.

There are medications that slow the deterioration of bone density, prescribed when osteoporosis is diagnosed in routine bone density tests. Women routinely have these tests. Men rarely do. In men, the diagnosis is often not made until a fracture occurs or a man complains of severe back pain and seeks medical attention.

More next month.
