August marks National Make-A-Will Month. You might wonder: why does this month exist? It is a nationwide movement designed to help everyone, regardless of age or wealth, take control of their future.
At ONEgeneration, our mission is to support and enrich the lives of older adults, children, and their families throughout our diverse community, and that includes providing our community with the tools needed to protect what you’ve worked so hard to build. That’s why we are sharing a free secure online resource from our partner, FreeWill.
The Freewill virtual platform allows you create your will from wherever you have access to a computer and internet with no in-person meetings required. Just click on the link below, set up a user name and password and the program will guide you through each step of the will creation process through its interactive screens. You can save your work at anytime and return to it later.

What a wonderful way to celebrate summer! ONEgeneration's Grandparents As Parents families recently spent the day together at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, enjoying a picnic lunch on the lawn before exploring the museum's fascinating exhibits. The adventure ended with an exciting 3D dinosaur movie that was a huge hit with the kids!
Events like these give our kinship families the opportunity to connect, create lasting memories, and experience something new together while keeping our GAP kids engaged and active throughout the summer. Thank you to all of the families who joined us—we loved spending the day with you!
| | Our Grandparents As Parents Program was thrilled to host our 6th Annual Grandfamilies Camping Trip this summer! Kinship families from across Los Angeles County came together in Ventura for two nights of fun, relaxation, and unforgettable memories. Families enjoyed swimming, train rides, a water park, movies under the stars, delicious food, and plenty of opportunities to connect with one another. More than just a camping trip, this annual tradition gives caregivers and children a chance to take a break from everyday challenges, strengthen friendships, and celebrate the joy of summer together. Thank you to all of the families and staff who made this year's campout another incredible success, we're already looking forward to next year! | | Also, this summer Grandparents As Parents hosted several Family Cupcake Wars parties where guardians and children could use their creativity to decorate a tasty treat. Nina “Magdalene” Liu has lived a life filled with resilience, dedication, and a love for connecting with others. Born in Shanghai, she attended boarding school with nuns in Moscow, grew up in Hong Kong, and later worked for airlines before moving to the United States with her husband. Nina has called California home since 1967, first living in Palos Verdes before later moving to the San Fernando Valley to help support her family when her son welcomed twins.
Professionally, Nina spent nearly 20 years working as an executive senior secretary at NASA before stepping away from her career to help care for her family. Over the years, she has remained deeply involved in helping others through volunteer work at churches, schools, and hospitals.
Nina describes herself as a bit of a “tomboy” and enjoys staying active through exercise, bicycle riding, and spending time talking with people. At ONEgeneration, she especially enjoys classes like Soulful Steps & Sounds. What she appreciates most about the center is the welcoming environment and the kindness of the people around her, sharing, “Everybody is so kind. The instructors are great, and there is free food!”
With a warm spirit and caring heart, Nina continues to value community, connection, and staying active every day.
Her guiding philosophy is simple yet heartfelt: “Do it from your heart.”

We extend our sincere gratitude to Los Angeles City Council District 4, LACMA Los Angeles County Museum of Art our incredible volunteers, and dedicated ONEgeneration staff for helping coordinate and host an unforgettable afternoon of art and cultural enrichment for our members.
From exploring inspiring exhibits and learning about diverse artistic traditions to enjoying delicious sack lunches and traveling in the comfort of air-conditioned charter buses, every detail helped make the experience special. Our members had a wonderful time learning, exploring, connecting with one another, and creating lasting memories.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this experience possible. Community partnerships like these enrich the lives of older adults and create opportunities for lifelong learning and exploration. We look forward to many more adventures together!

Introducing a New Early-Stage Alzheimer's
Social Engagement & Respite Program

ONEgeneration is proud to announce the launch of an innovative new program designed specifically for individuals experiencing early-stage memory loss and those newly diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia. Made possible through a grant from the Alzheimer's Association Center for Dementia Respite Innovation (CDRI), this specialized pilot program addresses a critical gap in dementia care by providing meaningful support during the earliest stages of the journey.
Hosted within our Adult Daycare Center in a dedicated, welcoming space, the program is designed to help participants maintain social connections, purpose, independence, and quality of life. Grounded in memory café principles, the program offers a stigma-free environment where individuals can connect with peers, engage in enriching activities, and continue pursuing meaningful experiences.
Participants will enjoy enhanced therapeutic programming, including Art Therapy, Music and Movement, technology-based activities, engaging discussion groups, and ONEgeneration's signature intergenerational experiences that foster connection across generations.
If you or a loved one has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia and are looking for a supportive, engaging community, we invite you to learn more.

Volunteering at FIFA World Cup

American Heart Association
A heartfelt thank you to the American Heart Association for providing a valuable Hands-Only CPR Training for our members at ONEgeneration Senior Enrichment Center! We were thrilled to have 26 older adults participate in this engaging and educational session, where they learned lifesaving skills and gained the confidence to respond during a cardiac emergency. By teaching the simple but powerful technique of Hands-Only CPR, the American Heart Association is helping empower our community members to make a difference when every second counts.

Providence Health
ONEgeneration Senior Enrichment Center is proud to have partnered with Providence Health to participate in a 12-week Tai Chi program. Over the past three months, 17 of our members committed to improving their strength, balance, and overall well-being through this wonderful program and successfully completed it! We were thrilled to celebrate each participant as they received their certificate of completion. Their dedication and perseverance are truly inspiring.
Congratulations to all of our graduates! Your hard work paid off, and we are so proud of you.

Dept of Agriculture and Community Investment Department of Los Angeles
ONEgeneration helped hundreds of older adults receive Farmers Market Senior Nutrition Program cards loaded with $50 to use directly with growers at local Farmers Markets. Thank you to the Department of Agriculture and the Community Investment Department of Los Angeles for providing this impactful program. These cards assist seniors with additional nutritional support and supports local California farmers by increasing their customers. SFMNP Cards can be used at at any Farmers Market with registered vendors, including Encino Farmers Market on Sundays open 8-1pm (17400 Victory Blvd).

Jimmy has been delivering meals with ONEgeneration for over 5 years. He enjoyed spending a few minutes with those he delivered to, so they felt less lonely. Jimmy has a difficult route of all apartment buildings but somehow was always able to find parking or know to go without getting a ticket in his many years of driving.
He grew up in Hungary on a farm and then at 15 years old decided he needed to move to America and went to the American Embassy to ask for help in coming here legally. They helped him get a sponsor after he was very persistent. He arrived in New York on his own not speaking any English. He found his way to New Jersey where he really wanted to learn a trade and found an opportunity where he could learn jewelry manufacturing working his way up to $1.05 an hour. This allowed him to save up money. He would watch detective shows that took place in Los Angeles with Palm Trees and he knew this is where he wanted to be. So, he used most of his money to buy an American Airlines flight to Los Angeles.
He worked for many years in Jewelry manufacturing, even owning his own shop for many years. He was married for 52 years and they had 4 children, two of whom live here in the LA area. Jimmy and his wife would attend the senior center together as an activity while she had Alzheimer's until her passing.
Jimmy then found some friends at the center and would play cards with them outside. Eventually he met Mimi the Nutrition Coordinator at the senior center and he liked that she was always running around keeping busy. They were together for many years until her recent passing. They went through many health struggles together, but he cherished his time with her.
Now, Jimmy is retiring from delivering meals. He will very much miss those who de delivered to. He will go on to help his son and daughter-in-law who live in Altadena. There home was affected by the fire and Jimmy will help them through the restoration process, he looks forward to spending this time with his son.
Although we are disappointed to lose such a dedicated and compassionate meal driver, ONEgeneration wishes Jimmy a relaxing retirement and meaningful time with his family.

The ONEgeneration Encino Farmers Market is an excellent way for everyone in the family to spend time together on a Sunday. Open year-round, over 30 farmers from all over Central and Southern California, over 25 food vendors, and over 10 crafters participate, with donations and a portion of the proceeds each week going towards supporting ONEgeneration’s community programs and services. The market is open every Sunday from 8am to 1 pm. Plenty of free parking.
And, are you looking for some excellent organic produce? Then look no further. Our Market has many vendors that sell organic goods, including Etheridge Farms, G Farms, John Givens Farm, Menos Farms, and our newest farmer Sunrise Organic Farms. Featuring Cantaloupe, Dapple Dandy Pluots, Bi-Color Corn, Sunburst Squash, and Green Kale. The produce from Sunrise Organic Farms is not to be missed.
Also in August, we will be feature two new entertainers. A ukulele group called the Jumpin' Flea Circus Players, and Joseph Eid, a singer/songwriter new to the farmers market scene. And of course – please be sure to visit Stephen the Clown for some unique balloon animals for the kids!

What is a heat pump?
A heat pump is an all-in-one system that keeps your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Instead of making heat, it moves heat — which uses less energy and can lower your utility bills.
Good news!
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is offering rebates of $2,500 per ton for new heat pump heating and cooling systems. ONEgeneration can help you understand the program and apply.

ONEgeneration’s Grandparents As Parents (GAP) program has launched an initiative focused on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) supported by a grant from Cedars-Sinai. This program provides screenings, resources, and tools to support caregivers and children impacted by ACEs. As part of this effort, GAP publishes a monthly newsletter for caregivers and individuals who have experienced ACEs themselves or are raising children affected by them. This newsletter includes valuable information relevant to many and is shared here for the benefit of all.
