Happy Thanksgiving

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the many volunteers who joined ONEgeneration to deliver meals to homebound older adults on Thanksgiving Day. Families and community members came together to provide a special holiday meal for those who had nowhere to go for the holiday. The smiles on the faces of these homebound seniors, who appreciated the presence of young children and compassionate volunteers, made a difficult day much brighter.

We also want to thank Sagebrush Cantina and the Calabasas Rotary Club for once again hosting a meal service for our more active older adults from both the ONEgeneration Senior Centers (in Reseda and Northridge). ONEgeneration arranged for two buses filled with older adults, who enjoyed a lovely holiday feast together, graciously served by wonderful volunteers.

In Loving Memory

Senior Center Member of the Month

Laughter drifts out of OSEC’s Activity Room on a Wednesday afternoon as members give their undivided attention to their Beginner Spanish teacher, Avi Leibovici, a multilingual educator, longtime social worker, volunteer, and self-described comedian. Avi has been volunteering at OSEC for about five months, and he is already a beloved teacher and member of the ONEgeneration community. He seamlessly blends humor with language education, making his classroom a lively environment for everyone who attends. Avi describes having a profound respect for people who want to feel closer to all cultures, to immigrants, to the history of California.

Avi has worn many hats throughout his life, all of which focus on helping others. He received his master’s degree in social work from UCLA and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). He was the CEO of VISTAS for over 30 years, a non-profit agency that provides day programs for adults with developmental disabilities and mental health conditions. He has also volunteered at several elementary schools in the Sherman Oaks and Van Nuys areas, mentoring and tutoring children, especially those struggling with language, and has facilitated Spanish-speaking parenting groups to help families build stronger skills at home. Click to read more.

Sages & Seekers

Childcare - Intergenerational Daycare

ONEgeneration’s Intergenerational Programs enjoyed a lively November filled with meaningful connections. Children and older adult “neighbors” came together for activities celebrating Veterans Day and Thanksgiving, including a special visit from a Smiling Sea dentist who taught hands-on dental hygiene.

Participants also enjoyed a Thanksgiving story and festive pie tasting. Meanwhile, teens and active older adults concluded the fall semester of Sages and Seekers with heartfelt tribute presentations, expressing gratitude for the conversations and relationships built over their eight weeks together.

In Gratitude

Thank you to Councilmember Imelda Padilla and her team for generously providing and distributing more than 100 turkeys at ONEgeneration’s Walk-Up Food Pantry. With their support, along with our dedicated partners, we were able to serve over 269 households with holiday food assistance.

We are grateful to the volunteers from Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills and West Coast University for lending their time and energy, and to SCAN Health Plan for supporting the pantry and sharing valuable resources for older adults. A special thank-you as well to Health Net, LLC for their ongoing commitment to our community food pantry efforts.

Resident Newsletter Poet

SMILING AT ANOTHER PERSON

a poem by Norman Molesko

A few Smiling at another person

can almost assuredly

initiate a positive relationship.

Such a relationship can generate

optimism towards one another.

When I smile, I smile back at myself.

Smiling back at me makes me feel good.

When another person sees me smile,

the smile is also picked up by this other person,

who in turn also smiles at me and makes me feels good.
