Last month, ONEgeneration held a Brick Dedication ceremony for the donors of our future  ONEgeneration  Community Room at our JOY Intergenerational Daycare Center. Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate this special occasion. Click on the link below for information on how you can donate to this campaign. For donations or $500, a brick will be engraved with your personal tribute and be set in the pathway to the site of the future Community Room as a lasting legacy.
Encino Farmers Market
The Farmers Market welcomes July and all of its great fruits and vegetables. Check out the heirloom tomatoes at Valdiva Farms. Brandywine, Cherokee chocolate and black cherry are considered the top variety in California. G-Farms now have yellow or red watermelons, always a big hit with customers. Burkdoll Farms from Visalia CA have a tasty treat, mango and honeydew nectarines. Murray Farms is just starting to bring their wide variety of table grapes to market. My favorite are cotton candy grapes, and yes they really do taste like cotton candy.

Also, did you know that our 25 year old  Encino Farmer's Market  was highlighted in the Valley News Group 's "Encino Enterprise's Special Summer Health & Fitness" edition that came out on June 21, 2019? Click here to read the article on page 3.

See you Sunday!

Carole  - Market Manager

The Encino Market accepts EBT/CAL Fresh (see below) and WIC at the main gate.
The Market is open Sundays 8 am to 1 pm and all proceeds benefit ONEgeneration's Senior Services.

Grandparents As Parents at the L.A. Zoo
On Saturday June 15 th ONEgeneration's Intergenerational Grandparents As Parents program held a "Welcome Summer" event at the LA Zoo. GAP families had their own private area at the zoo where they enjoyed face painting for the kids, a wonderful BBQ lunch, summer fun gift bags for each child and a gift card for the caregivers to help with the extra expenses that occur in summer when kids are home from school. After the party the families all enjoyed visiting the zoo and seeing the animals. Thank you to everyone who helped make our summer family event fun for all ages.
If you or someone you know is raising "kinship children", ONEgeneration has many resources to help your family including numerous Resource Support Groups, Court Navigation assistance, and much more. Please call 818-264-0880 for more information.

Childcare: Preschool Graduation 2019
Dr. Kristine Vardanyan
Director of ONEgeneration Childcare (NAEYC Accredited)
On Thursday, June 14, 2019, thirty-five of our "Leopards: and "Dragons" officially culminated from our ONEgeneration Preschool Program. The night was filled with singing, dancing, delicious food and of course lots of happy and bittersweet tears. What made this particular culmination extra special is the fact that many of our children who culminated were enrolled at ONEgeneration since they were infants. We will certainly miss all of our children but understand that they are ready to spread their wings and fly. Congratulations to all of our children and their families!

Adult Daycare & ADHC
We kicked off summertime at our Adult Day Care Center recently with a visit from some "furry" friends from a petting zoo. Bunnies, birds, guinea pigs and even a Chihuahua spent time with our seniors. Seniors held the animals and were able to feed them some lettuce and a carrot or two . See photos below.

Dr. David Stern's Expert Corner:
This month I will review postmenopausal osteoporosis. Bone is living tissue that is constantly being broken down and replaced. Osteoporosis causes bones to become weak, porous, and brittle. It occurs when the creation of new bone doesn’t keep up with the loss of old bone. Bones become fragile and the risk of fracture is the obvious outcome. The loss of bone occurs silently and progressively and the first fracture may be the first symptom. Osteoporosis results in 1.5 million fractures per year in the United States, most frequently occurring in postmenopausal women. Most of the osteoporosis related fractures occur in the hip, wrist, or spine.

Once the bones have been significantly weakened by osteoporosis signs and symptoms may
·         Back pain caused by a fractured or collapsed vertebra
·         Loss of height over time
·         A stooped posture
·         A bone that breaks much more easily than expected

Bone mineral density can be measured by a machine that uses low levels of x-rays to determine the proportion of mineral in the bones. Low bone density indicates the presence of osteoporosis. Measurement of bone mineral density is
recommended routinely in women aged 65 and over, and in others with risk factors for osteoporosis. Typically measurements of hip bones and spine bones provide the numbers doctors need to make the diagnosis.

Treatment will be discussed in next month's article.
