This recognition highlights our collaborative efforts to introduce the RISE (Repair Harm, Inspire Change, Support Connection, and Empower Choice) model to older adults experiencing abuse, neglect, and exploitation, helping provide person-centered support that respects dignity, autonomy, and safety. Barbara Kelner first visited ONEgeneration’s Senior Enrichment Center over a decade ago with a friend. What started as a casual visit soon became part of her weekly routine. At OSEC, she enjoys meeting new people, playing lively games of table tennis, and music-related classes like Music Singalong and Music & Comedy. However, for Barbara, the center is more than just a place for activities, it is a place where she feels a sense of connection and community.

           Originally from the East Coast (born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Newark, NJ), Barbara made her way to Los Angeles in the late 1970s. Barbara recalls being very shy throughout her early life, which influenced her schooling and career paths. Instead of attending a traditional high school, she attended a vocational school called Park Beauty Academy. She then became a licensed cosmetologist and hairstylist, which helped her come out of her shell. Over the years, she also worked in retail, briefly as a waitress, and as an astrologist. Above all, Barbara’s true passion is people. “I love people. I like to see what makes people tick and how they act. I see people as a movie I am watching,” she said.

Her passion for people naturally merged with her interest in astrology. Barbara initially began learning about astrology to better understand herself and her shyness. She has also used astrology to better understand others through their signs and birth charts. She has even been hired to read people’s birth charts at parties and events throughout Los Angeles.

           Barbara is also passionate about food, especially her morning breakfast: a hardboiled egg, half an avocado, cottage cheese, berries, and coffee. “I am so happy eating breakfast,” she said with a smile.

           When it comes to words of wisdom, Barbara encourages others to accept people for who they are without trying to change them and to live in the present moment, though it can be the hardest thing to do. “Don’t look to the past. Don’t look to the future. Try your best to stay in the moment that you are in.”

Barbara now offers astrology readings at OSEC on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of every month

Thank you to the SpartanRepair Initiative, a student club from San Jose State University, for leading an engaging and informative technology class at ONEgeneration Senior Enrichment Center last month. Over 30 of our members participated, learning practical tips and tricks to make their smartphones more user-friendly—whether they use iPhone or Android. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions, gain confidence, and walk away with valuable skills they can use every day. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and we’re excited to share that this class has already been requested again! We’re currently working to bring the SpartanRepair Initiative back for another session. Stay tuned!

ONEgeneration's Senior Enrichment Center would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all of our members and staff for your patience, understanding, and flexibility during the installation of our new multipurpose room floors. We're excited to share that the project is now complete, and we're thrilled to see our members back in the space enjoying their classes once again! Your support throughout the process made this upgrade possible, and we couldn't be happier with the results. Thank you for being such an amazing community. The ONEgeneration Encino Farmers Market is an excellent way for everyone in the family to spend time together on a Sunday. Open year-round, over 30 farmers from all over Central and Southern California, over 25 food vendors, and over 10 crafters participate, with donations and a portion of the proceeds each week going towards supporting ONEgeneration’s community programs and services. The market is open every Sunday from 8am to 1 pm. Plenty of free parking.

Nathaniel “Nat” John Hutton 1941- 2026

ONEgeneration recently lost beloved our long-time Board Member, colleague and friend Nathaniel "Nat" John Hutton. Nat served on our Board of Directors since 2010 and greatly impacted our organization with his unwavering support of intergenerational connections, services for older adults, and equity in healthcare and housing. Nat will be greatly missed and his impact will be felt by the communities that he tirelessly served for decades to come. Read the Los Angeles Sentinel News Service's tribute to Nat's life.

Maxine Simons 1927-2026

ONEgeneration pays tribute to our long-time Senior Enrichment Center member and friend, Maxine Simons. Maxine was full of life and will dearly be missed by all who crossed her path. Maxine grew up in Hollywood in the 1930s and eventually relocated to the San Fernando Valley. What is a heat pump?

A heat pump is an all-in-one system that keeps your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Instead of making heat, it moves heat — which uses less energy and can lower your utility bills.

Good news!

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is offering rebates of $2,500 per ton for new heat pump heating and cooling systems. ONEgeneration can help you understand the program and apply.

The Elderly Aging

Aging can be experienced as a take-away for many elderly.

For these elderly, things change in time as the years past,

becoming less and less.

Many younger don’t relate to elderly decline,

especially when not in contact with the one in decline.

Those younger cannot be bothered.

Their heads are in different places.

They worry about jobs, money, kids and more.

From where many younger are, elderly aging is far-away.

The reality for the elderly is in the here and the now.

Outward features, deepening wrinkles, flabby skin, double chin,

lowered shoulders, walking slowly and carefully, are easily noticed.

The elderly must not hide from nor avoid the younger.

The elderly have much to give to and share with the younger.

The younger should take advantage of the elderly wisdom.
