Phillip is a lifelong Californian, Navy veteran, and longtime public servant with a passion for learning, teaching, and helping others. Raised by parents who graduated from Tuskegee University and moved from Alabama to California, Phillip followed a path of service by joining the Navy at 18, where he worked with nuclear power plants aboard ships and gained extensive engineering and nuclear physics knowledge. He later worked as a contractor electrician before dedicating 30 years to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power as an electric station operator.
Phillip is married with two adult children and enjoys home design, chess, bridge, and meaningful discussions. At ONEgeneration, he found not only a place to play bridge, but also an opportunity to volunteer, connect with others, and continue teaching and learning. He especially values the strong sense of community and the kindness of the staff, sharing, “I thank ONEgeneration for being here to serve seniors. The people who work here are so nice. They really do the work. It’s not just a paycheck.”
| | ONEgeneration’s Grandparents As Parents (GAP) families recently enjoyed a special outing to the The El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood for a showing of Star Wars: The Force Awakens! Families received a full movie experience with tickets, soda, hot dogs, and popcorn making it a fun and memorable day for everyone. From the excitement of the big screen to the joy of sharing the moment together, it was truly a special experience. It was wonderful to see families from across LA County come together, connect, and enjoy this adventure side by side. Thank you to everyone who joined us—we love creating opportunities like this for our GAP families to build lasting memories! | | Our Grandparents As Parents Program and Penny Lane Centers recently partnered to host a special Family Photo Day for our clients! Families had the opportunity to take professional family photos and decorate picture frames to display their memories at home. For some families, it had been years since they last had a family portrait taken, and our caregivers and children truly embraced the fun and excitement of the day. Thank you to all of our participants for joining us and helping make this another wonderful and memorable event for our kinship community! | | GAP staff and clients were proud to attend the Kinship Care LA Conference on May 14th, a day filled with valuable information, resources, and connection for kinship caregivers across Los Angeles County. We were especially honored to have Samantha Carrera from GAP serve on a panel of speakers, where she shared her personal experience as a relative caregiver raising her siblings. The conference provided a wonderful opportunity to learn alongside caregivers and connect with organizations and DCFS staff who are dedicated to supporting kinship families. Thank you to everyone who helped make this meaningful event possible! | | ONEgeneration Mother's Day Celebrations | | | In honor of Mother’s Day, ONEgeneration celebrated the incredible mothers, grandmothers, and mother figures in our community with special activities across our programs. Are your heating and cooling bills higher than you’d like?
If your home feels too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter, it may be time to think about a new heating and cooling system.
ONEgeneration can help you apply for rebates that can lower the cost and help you save money.
What is a heat pump?
A heat pump is an all-in-one system that keeps your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Instead of making heat, it moves heat — which uses less energy and can lower your utility bills.
Good news!
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is offering rebates of $2,500 per ton for new heat pump heating and cooling systems. ONEgeneration can help you understand the program and apply.
For more information contact Juana Torres at jtorres@onegeneration.org or call 818-708-6603.
| | ONEgeneration's Grandparents As Parents Program | | | | | |
ONEgeneration’s Grandparents As Parents (GAP) program has launched an initiative focused on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) supported by a grant from Cedars-Sinai. This program provides screenings, resources, and tools to support caregivers and children impacted by ACEs. As part of this effort, GAP publishes a monthly newsletter for caregivers and individuals who have experienced ACEs themselves or are raising children affected by them. This newsletter includes valuable information relevant to many and is shared here for the benefit of all.

Older Seniors Need Not Be Lonely
a poem by Norman Molesko
Many older Seniors feel and perceive
themselves as being alone and not belonging.
They can become lonely and socially isolated.
However, to remedy such feelings, these Seniors
could start reaching out and start relating to each
another, like chit-chatting and sharing their lives.
They could talk about what is familiar and also new,
nostalgic and non-nostalgic, with each other.
These Seniors could be tuning in to other caring folks.
They could feel socially connected and content to belong.
Goodbye to being lonely and not belonging. They now belong.
