Protect Aging Services in

Los Angeles County

Call to Action

URGENT CALL TO ACTION: Protect Aging Services in Los Angeles County

From: ONEgeneration President & CEO, Jenna Hauss

Older adults across Los Angeles County are at risk of losing critical services that support their health, independence, and dignity.

The California Department of Aging (CDA) is proposing changes to the distribution of Older Americans Act (OAA) funding across the state, including a 17% budget reduction for Los Angeles County. While this may sound technical, the real-life impact is very clear: Los Angeles County could lose significant funding for essential services, including home-delivered meals, congregate dining, senior centers, case management, transportation, and caregiver support. To learn more, click here.

For many older adults, these programs are not optional; they are lifelines.

Los Angeles County is home to more older adults than any other county in California, with over 2.1 million residents age 60+. Many are living on fixed incomes, facing rising housing costs, and struggling to meet basic needs. Nearly 40% of older adults in our region already face financial hardship, and demand for services continues to grow.

If this proposal moves forward as written, it could result in fewer meals, fewer services, and fewer people served, at a time when the need has never been greater.

Why Your Voice Matters

State leaders still have time to ensure this funding formula is fair, accurate, and reflects real community needs before it is finalized. But they need to hear directly from you.

Your voice can help:

  • Protect the services you or your loved one deserves
  • Ensure funding reflects the true needs of Los Angeles County
  • Prevent harmful cuts to programs that support older adults every day

Take Action Today

We urge you, your family members, caregivers, and community members to speak out:

1. Submit a Public Comment to the California Department of Aging

📧 Email: CA2030@aging.ca.gov

📝 Subject Line: Public Hearing Comment: IFF Proposal

⏰ Deadline: May 12, 2026, at 5:00 p.m.

-Letter template for older adults (Click here)

-Letter template for caregivers/family members (Click here)

2. Contact Your State Elected Officials

Ask them to support a fair and transparent funding formula that protects services in Los Angeles County.

👉 Send a letter here:

https://actionnetwork.org/letters/ask-your-state-representatives-to-support-a-validation-step-for-aging-services-funding?source=direct_link&

3. Spread the Word

Share this information with friends, family, neighbors, and others in your community who rely on or care about aging services.

(If you need help with sending out a letter, please respond to this email, and we will be happy to help.)

Stand With Us

At ONEgeneration, we are committed to ensuring that older adults are not overlooked and that the systems meant to support them remain strong, equitable, and responsive.

But we cannot do this alone.

Your voice matters. Your story matters. Your action matters.

Together, we can protect the services that so many depend on.

In Gratitude

Wilkinson Senior Center

ONEgeneration’s Wilkinson Senior Center celebrated birthdays with the help of the Total Senior and host Yvette. Games were played and they had a special visitor of the Easter Bunny, and California State University, Northridge students stopped by to say hi, help and assist with an Easter egg hunt. 150 eggs filled with a variety of candies were hidden outside for our members to find. Later the egg seekers were given some chips and water for participation and then the birthday celebrations began! Total Senior provided cupcakes for the participants! Happy birthday to all of those born is April!

Week of the Young Child

ONEgeneration Celebrating the magic of childhood, at every age! For "Week of the Young Child", our children, teachers, and neighbors came together to create something beautiful, a rainbow mural made hand-in-hand.

Because at ONEgeneration, we believe in honoring not just the incredible children in our lives, but the child within all of us.

Earth Day at Wilkinson Senior Center

Wilkinson Senior Center hosted an Earth Day presentation by ONEgeneration's Community Environmental Outreach team. Our members learned what we can do to help save the planet, conserve water, and plant a plant. Snacks and refreshments were provided to all! Thank you to our volunteer Barbara who helped serve snacks and refreshments!

Los Angeles Police Department

Wilkinson Senior Center hosted "Coffee with a Cop" for our members. Thank you to Senior Lead Officer from the LAPD Devonshire District, Officer John Parker, 911 dispatch and team who came to talk about Senior scams/frauds, how to protect yourself, and emergency services. Thank you to Lysa Crawford for providing snacks.

LA Metro - Riders on the Move Club

Thank you to Mike and Marcy from the Metro Los Angeles On the Move Riders Club for leading a group of ONEgeneration's Wilkinson Senior Center members to the Getty using public transportation. The group toured the museum and had a nice lunch.

Grandparents As Parents

Recently, ONEgeneration was proud to host a Social Emotional Skills Building event for children in our Grandparents As Parents Program.

This special event focused on helping children develop healthy ways to understand and manage big feelings—building skills that support their emotional well-being and resilience. It is part of a larger initiative to provide kinship families with valuable tools and resources for supporting children impacted by Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Cedars-Sinai for their generous support in making our ACEs-focused work possible, as well as to Free Arts for leading an incredible art class that inspired creativity and expression. A special shoutout to our high-energy yoga instructor, Sidney, for bringing fun, movement, and positivity to the day!

GAP is truly grateful for the opportunity to work with such amazing children and to support our caregivers with education and tools that strengthen the entire family.

On April 1st, ONEgeneration’s Grandparents As Parents Program had the joy of taking caregivers and their children from SPA 2 and SPA 4 on a special trip to the Aquarium of the Pacific! Families traveled together by bus to Long Beach, where they enjoyed lunch, snacks, and most importantly, meaningful quality time exploring the wonders of marine life side by side. From colorful fish to fascinating sea creatures, it was a day filled with learning, laughter, and connection

We are incredibly grateful to our amazing partners, Penny Lane and All For Kids, for helping make this memorable experience possible for our families.

Are your heating and cooling bills higher than you’d like?

If your home feels too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter, it may be time to think about a new heating and cooling system.

ONEgeneration can help you apply for rebates that can lower the cost and help you save money.

What is a heat pump?

A heat pump is an all-in-one system that keeps your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Instead of making heat, it moves heat — which uses less energy and can lower your utility bills.

Good news!

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is offering rebates of $2,500 per ton for new heat pump heating and cooling systems. ONEgeneration can help you understand the program and apply.

For more information contact Juana Torres at jtorres@onegeneration.org or call 818-708-6603.

ONEgeneration's Grandparents As Parents Program

ONEgeneration’s Grandparents As Parents (GAP) program has launched an initiative focused on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) supported by a grant from Cedars-Sinai. This program provides screenings, resources, and tools to support caregivers and children impacted by ACEs. As part of this effort, GAP publishes a monthly newsletter for caregivers and individuals who have experienced ACEs themselves or are raising children affected by them. This newsletter includes valuable information relevant to many and is shared here for the benefit of all.

Resident Newsletter Poet

Go Away Demons of Stress

a poem by Norman Molesko

I aspire to walk down the path

of being good to myself.

I should learn to discern

how best to prevent onsets of stress.

Also other ailments I don’t yearn.

I should not allow little demons of stress,

to dance around as they wish in my head.

These demons of worry and concern

should be forced to leave my mind.

Breathing-in, breathing-out, ten times,

could be the way for a stress-free day.
