Happy Intergenerational Month 2018 ❤
Every day at ONEgeneration we celebrate Intergenerational connections but each September in honor of Intergenerational Month we add special Intergenerational activities such as a science presentation, a pancake breakfast, dress up tea party, an educational performance and a field game day. Watch for our October Newsletter to see the photos.
Happy Grandparents Day 2018
When Nisa first started attending ONEgeneration’s Intergenerational Daycare Center, she was hesitant to participant in activities because she wasn't confident in her ability to speak English. Nisa, an immigrant from Thailand, soon acclimated to the multicultural climate at ONEgeneration and now looks forward to coming to the Daycare every day. Her favorite activities are IGP and Bingo. IGP is short for Intergenerational Programs whereby the children of our Childcare join the seniors in our Adult Daycare in daily activities. Nisa lights up when she interacts with the children and loves helping them with projects.

The seniors attending our Daycare represent 24 countries of origin. Once a month, to celebrate and to learn about the traditions and cultures of these countries, ONEgeneration hosts “Around the World Wednesday”. Every month a different country is highlighted. When Thailand was showcased, our senior Nisa teamed up with Ammi, a ONEgeneration preschool teacher who also speaks Thai to help with this multicultural activity. The children started by locating Thailand on the globe. Later they worked on lotus flower and elephant themed crafts. Elephants in Thailand symbolize both power and peace.  Nisa also brought Thai snacks; “pink milk”, plantain chips and rice treats to share with the seniors and preschoolers. ONEgeneration is so grateful to Nisa and her family for assisting in making "Around The World Wednesday - Thailand" a fun and educational day.

Happy Grandparents Day to Nisa, and to all of our Grandparents at ONEgeneration.

Every year from October 15 to December 7 you have the opportunity to enroll or make changes in your Part D Prescription Drug plans or Medicare Advantage plans.

You should shortly receive your plan’s A nnual N otice O f C hange indicating what changes, if any, your plan will experience starting 1/1/19. We strongly encourage you to review those changes. We review these Annual Notice of Changes when they come out and alert our existing clients to significant changes or better options for them in the marketplace.

We also suggest that you confirm that your plan will continue to cover your prescriptions in a similar manner for 2019. provides the tools you need to accomplish this. Or, you should check with your plan or agent and have them confirm there are no significant changes.
If you think you may be starting any new drug regimen; visit your doctor soon, so that you can factor those new medications into the projection for 2019.

Every year we offer to review our existing clients’ prescription drug coverage. We also offer to review drug coverage for all of our Medicare Advantage clients. We shop and compare all available plans on We usually recommend to about 15% of our clients that they make a change in plans for a better value or because of new restrictions on their drugs. But, for 85% we often see no compelling reasons to change.

If you address this early in the Annual Election Period you may be able to get exceptions for the following year in advance.   We find that by doing this review, we have vastly reduced the panic calls from clients in January or February that suddenly discover their drugs are no longer covered or have new restrictions.

New for 2019 is the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period January 1 to March 31 . This may give you a onetime opportunity to change your Medicare Advantage plan or revert back to basic Medicare and get a Part D prescription drug plan.

National Adult Day Services Week
Every September, ONEgeneration celebrates National Adult Day Services Week. Sponsored by the National Adult Day Services Association, the third complete week of September is set aside to celebrate Adult Day Programs every year. This year, the dates are September 16 – 22.

Adult Day Services significantly improve the lives of adults with functional and/or cognitive impairments, enabling them to live at home with family and in the community. ONEgeneration is unique in its provision of intergenerational services. We work to build a better community every day for our seniors and children through mutually beneficial activities that enhance the lives of both populations.

During Adult Day Services Week, we make a special point of celebrating the hard work and dedication of our program staff. It is because of them that our adult day care services and intergenerational programs are such a success.
Dr. Stern serves as the Medical Director of ONEgeneration's Adult Day Healthcare Program. He reviews participant care plans and makes recommendations for enhanced care. Dr. Stern is available as needed for consultation on medical concerns .

Dr. David Stern's Expert Corner:
Alzheimer’s disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry out even the simplest tasks. About 5.7 million Americans are stricken with this disease. One in ten of us over the age of 65 is likely to be affected. There is no known cure. Yes, there are medications that may slow the rate of cognitive decline, but there is no cure. Many attempts have been made but all have failed.
That is why I was excited by news publicized at the recent Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Chicago. There is hope that at least two experimental drugs may successfully treat some people with Alzheimer’s.
One of the drugs works to reduce amyloid plaque deposits in the brain. While it has long been known that amyloid protein plaques or clumps build up in the brains of those with Alzheimer’s disease, no approach to decrease the amount of plaque has been successful in also reversing memory loss and cognitive confusion. That is, until now. While there needs to be further testing to be sure that initial findings hold up and that the drug is safe, the results thus far are hopeful.
The second drug uses genetic markers to help identify the patients who are most likely to respond favorably to the drug tested. The idea is that a medication to treat Alzheimer’s may work well in some dementia patients and not so well in others. When the right patients get the right medicine at the right time, treatments will be more effective and have fewer side effects. The second new medication found that for the right patient “clinically meaningful” improvements were found in their ability to reason, remember, and carry on daily activities.
New drugs must be tested on large numbers of people to confirm that they are safe and that they do work, are beneficial. But there is hope .

“I had heard of GAP for quite a few years having been in foster care for 23 years and didn’t realize what a blessing this group really is. I have only been attending the meeting for about six months and have found it to be a great support system and I really look forward to attending. Sometimes it is just a matter of this being my only social outlet. I have made friends and we all look out for each other.”
