Neighborhood Updates

Nominate a Neighbor or Community Assembly Volunteer for one of the following awards!

Nominations can be submitted online through Friday, Nov. 15.

  • "Spirit of the CA" Award": This is an acknowledgement of exceptional service to the Community Assembly (CA) and commitment to uphold the CAs purpose and values. Eligibility: Only CA representatives and alternate representatives are eligible for nominations in this category.
  • "Good Neighbor Award": This is an acknowledgement of exceptional service to the Spokane Neighborhoods and commitment to uphold the Community Assembly's purpose and values. Eligibility: Neighborhood Council members and officers, CA representatives and alternate representatives, and CA liaisons are eligible for nominations in this category.
  • “Jeanette Harras Award”: Jeanette exemplified what a lifelong commitment to community organizing and meaningful community work looks like. As an instrumental member of the earliest days of Community Assembly, in addition to being a part of the Logan Neighborhood Council, she advocated for the needs of the entire Spokane community. Jeanette served on CA’s committees, worked with the City on community funding, and worked with fellow neighborhood leaders to inspire projects, cultivate enthusiasm, and engage in strategic thinking. Nominees of this award should exemplify a commitment to community involvement, selflessness, a desire to see meaningful, and positive impacts in the broader Spokane community.
  • “Lifetime Achievement Award”: This award is presented to an individual who has devoted an extraordinary period of time to the CA and/or their neighborhood council over many years, marked by consistent high-quality work. It is generally presented at or near the end of the term of service.

Neighbors You Should Know

The video series will include short documentaries highlighting unique community stories of leaders untold. Nominate a leader from your neighborhood whose positive impact should be featured. Nominations can be submitted online through Friday, Dec. 6. Featured stories will be recorded by CityCable 5 and shared throughout 2025 as a part of the 25th Anniversary Celebration.

Spokane Neighborhood Leadership Academy

Want to make a difference in your neighborhood, but do not know where to begin? The Spokane Neighborhood Leadership Academy (SNLA) is now accepting applications for the 2025 cohort! SNLA is a five-month program designed to equip new and emerging neighborhood council leaders with knowledge, skills and resources to increase engagement and effectively address neighborhood priorities. Apply by Friday, Jan. 3, to be a part of the 2025 cohort! Click here for program details and to access the application.

Asphalt Art

The Spokane Arts Asphalt Art Program in collaboration with the City of Spokane's Traffic Calming program converts parts of streets and crosswalks into public art installations, enriching local neighborhoods while providing a traffic calming solution.

Each District is given the opportunity to have two Asphalt Art crosswalks (example shown). Residents will be able to vote on one location within their District. Once voting is completed the two crosswalk locations with the most votes will move forward to the design process over the winter of 2024-2025 and be painted in 2025. The surveys will close on Saturday, Nov. 30.

Vote for the Asphalt Art crosswalk location in your District:

Aren't sure which District you live in? Click here for the map to search your address to find your Neighborhood Council and which District it is in.

All neighborhood councils are eligible to receive an asphalt art traffic calming project to paint an intersection on a residential street. This pilot program ends in 2027 and the application process includes selecting and having the intersection approved, selecting an artist, and approving the design. The actual painting of the street process takes several months. So, if your neighborhood could benefit from this program, apply here

Want to see the completed projects? Find them at Joseph Ave. and Cook St. in Hillyard, 25th Ave. and Monroe St. by the Scoop in Manito-Cannon Hill, Third Ave. and Elm St. in Browne’s Addition, Pittsburg St. and Weile Ave. in Shiloh Hills, and Chestnut St. and Dean Ave. in West Central.
