Course Enrollment

PHW222A: Biomedical Technology Policy (#33178) is open for enrollment!

  • New Spring 1 offering by the Division Chair of HPM James Robinson PhD, MPH - UC Berkeley Public Health Faculty 
  • 3 unit course that fulfills Policy requirement for HPM Concentration (as alternative to PHW220M) or can be an elective
  • This course examines the policy framework for biomedical technology, including medical devices, drugs, diagnostics, digital therapeutics, and algorithms. Emphasis will be placed on the funding of research and development, the protection of intellectual property, FDA market authorization, insurance coverage, and algorithm design. The focus will be on the United States but we will examine industrial policy and innovation nationalism within a global context.

Monthly Observances - Native American & Indigenous Peoples Heritage Month

In 1992, Berkeley became the first city to celebrate Indigenous People's Day. It was created to protest the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ arrival. Participate by reading one of the books on this list from the UC Berkeley library. Another recommendation is the story collection The Beadworkers by UC Berkeley Ethnic Studies Associate Professor Beth Piatote.

PHW236A Regulatory Science Journal Club Invitation 

Every Wednesday from 9 AM - 10 AM (PST) and 5 PM - 6 PM (PDT)


The teaching team from PHW236A: Regulatory Science, Drug Development, and Public Health are extending an invitation to the entire OOMPH community to attend the course's Journal Club session on Master Protocols for Evaluation of Candidate COVID-19 Therapeutics. The Journal Club is scheduled for Monday, November 22nd, at 5pm PST.


In their recent article, the Therapeutics-Clinical Working Group members of the Accelerating COVID-19 Therapeutics Interventions and Vaccines (ACTIV) public-private partnership describe the process by which nine master protocols were designed, developed, and launched between 14 April 2020 and 31 May 2021 to allow for the coordinated and efficient evaluation of multiple investigational therapeutic agents for COVID-19.


Two members of the Therapeutics-Clinical Working Group, including Dr. Judith S. Currier and Dr. Sarah Read will participate in the Journal Club session.
