Fr. Augustine Hilander, O.P.

WHEN YOUR CHAPTER HAS AN ELECTION
The laity in the Western Dominican Province is growing, with new Chapters and groups forming to become Chapters. As our Province grows it is important to keep your Lay Provincial Officers officers informed as to changes in your leadership, especially after your Chapter holds elections. Whenever there is a new prior or prioress, LPC Representative, or other officer is elected, it is important that you advise the LPC executive council:
Please send an email to the following people when there is a change in leadership:
1. Alejandra Barajas, LPC Secretary, at abarajas174@gmail.com
2. Fr. Augustine Hilander, O.P. at augustine.hilander@gmail.com
3. and, John Keenan, LPC President, at john@keenan.org
In that way, your Lay Provincial executive council can stay in touch with you and your Chapter! Thank you.

ROSARY CONFRATERNITY
Fr Lawrence Lew, O.P. has been hard at work in promoting the rosary. As Lay Dominicans, we can help
Being that it's the month of the Most Holy Rosary, there is no better time to consider joining the Rosary Confraternity, if you're not yet a member. Most of us already pray the rosary more than the frequency obligated by the Confraternity. The fruits of our prayers simply increase more than tenfold.
The benefits of membership are:
- The special protection of the Mother of God.
- A share in the prayer of many hundreds of thousands of members the world over, even after death.
- A share in the prayers, Masses and apostolic works of the entire Order of Preachers.
- The intercession of the entire heavenly court.
- Various plenary and partial indulgences.
- Six times a year the Rosary Center publication THE ROSARY, LIGHT AND LIFE is sent to those members who wish it. Its purpose is to provide sound doctrine and spiritual guidance for readers everywhere.
Obligations:
Each member strives to pray the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary each week (this does not bind under sin) and must have his/her name inscribed in the register of the Confraternity. There are no meetings, and no dues. As we pray, we pray also for the intentions of all the other members of the Rosary Confraternity worldwide, living and deceased.

SALT LAKE TRIP
On Saturday, October 12, 2024, Third Order members from various Chapters of the Dominican family gathered at the St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Salt Lake City, Utah, to receive the indulgence granted by the Holy Father under the auspices of St. Thomas Aquinas. It was a gathering of Lay Dominicans enjoying fellowship, prayer, Holy Mass, and lectures from Frs. Gabriel Mosher and Anselm Ramelow, O.P. The talks were excellent, the fellowship fulfilling, the food satiating, and the company was excellent. Fr. Augustine Hilander, O.P. organized it and it turned out well. Members from the Western Province showed up, including lay members from Montana, Idaho, Nevada, and Utah gathered together in fellowship. Thanks be to God!

MY CALL TO STUDY AND WORK ON THE PARTICULAR DIRECTORY |

The LPC tasked the Formation and Particular Directory commissions with revising the Particular Directory and working on a renewed formation program for the Province. The LPC has also revised the formal structure of the Lay Provincial Council; and authorized the development of the Province’s new website for the Dominican laity."

TRUTH BE TOLD - FALL 2024 |
"It has been six years since Truth Be Told was discontinued, and it is an honor to be asked to restart Truth Be Told as a supplement to the fine work Helen Nguyen is doing for the Province.
Since that time, we have all lived through increasing turmoil in the Church and civil society. It is not that we didn’t before then, but between the Cardinal McCarrick debacle and the Covid lockdowns, the enemy of our souls has increasingly presumed on his ascendency and exposed himself clearly and boldly. The entire world seems caught in the throes of a demonic effort to subject everyone to unspeakable and unrestrained evils. By human effort alone, the future appears very dark."

HONORING OUR BODIES AS TEMPLES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT |
"We should always remember that our bodies are not simply ours to do with as we please. After receiving the sacrament of Baptism, we become temples of the Holy Spirit (CCC 1265). The Spirit of God dwells within us, making our bodies His dwelling places here on earth. This tremendous honor carries responsibility with it: we must keep these temples pure and pleasing to Him by avoiding sin and immorality, as any impure acts would violate the sanctity of our bodies as God’s dwellings."

THE UNITY AND DIVERSITY OF THE MYSTICAL BODY OF CHRIST |
"In the Church, there is always a temptation to reduce the Church to one of her parts such as a single vocation, parish, apostolate, or religious order. When we view any of these as the entirety of the Church, every other form of the Church’s expression becomes an obstacle, an enemy."

BROTHERS IN ARMS, ROMEO AND JULIET, AND KNIVES OUT |
"There is a war on. We shouldn’t forget that. In fact, there’s more than one. Real wars, taking real lives, destroying real homes of real families.
It’s all too easy for those of us who aren’t doing the actual fighting and dying, living out of immediate danger, to simply dial down the volume and allow this reality to recede into the background static — just one more unpleasant thing going on which we have the luxury of paying attention to, or not, as we choose."

I'M WORRIED ABOUT THE GIRLS |

A WOMAN IS A HUMAN PERSON |
"What do we mean by that? In my last article, I detailed some of the many reasons I’m worried about the girls of this generation, who are more prone to anxiety, depression, and self-harm than any generation of girls on record. Not only are their teen years haunted by online bullying, pressure to mutilate and/or sell their bodies, and the normalization of “branding” themselves on social media, but they’re also offered very little vision of what healthy adult womanhood looks like. Instead, women are arguing about careers vs. tradwifery; the political “right” to end their own child’s life; and whether or not a woman, in principle, belongs in a significant political seat. "

A RENAISSANCE OF AQUINAS AT 800 |
"If you were born in 1224, the odds are not in your favor that you’ll have a blow-out 800th birthday celebration. But Thomas Aquinas is the exception to that rule. A recent conference at the University of Notre Dame, “Aquinas at 800: Ad Multos Annos,” brought 580 registered participants from twenty countries to hear more than 150 papers on the work of the great Dominican St. Thomas Aquinas. This conference was a fitting recognition of the Angelic doctor both in quantity of participants involved and the quality of papers presented. "

A FIRST LOOK AT 'THE COLLECTED POEMS OF J.R.R. TOLKIEN' |
"Writer, Poet, Scholar”: these words appear on the UK Royal Mint’s £2 coin commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of Tolkien’s death in 2023. Writer, of course: Tolkien has worldwide fame as the author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Scholar, yes, for Tolkien was an Oxford professor, a master of medieval literature and languages. But surprising though it might seem, it is no accident that “Poet” has central placement here."

LOVING OTHER CHRISTIANS, EVEN DURING AN ELLECTION |
"While John Paul II was perfectly clear that some actions are intrinsically wrong and can never be morally licit, faithful Catholics are entirely free to engage in prudential reasoning about most aspects of policy and voting. Some things are intrinsically wrong, but it’s less often the case that a particular action is intrinsically and universally correct. We are obligated to care for widows and orphans, yes, but whether this is best accomplished through this or the other party’s platform is something about which reasonable people of good will—faithful Catholics among them—can disagree."
