Brr...Cold Weather Ahead!

The heating season is fast approaching. Soon, we’ll all be turning up the heat to beat the winter cold.

Buyer’s Buzz News (BBN) had a chat with Linda Wortman, Purchasing Agent from the Office of Purchasing and Contracting (OPC) and she filled us in on the current fuel contracts and options currently available for the State of Vermont and how to use them.

BNN: Hi Linda! Thanks for joining us to talk about fuel!
Linda: Hello! It’s my pleasure to talk to you.

BNN: One of your responsibilities is putting in place the fuel contracts. How did you go about this?
Linda: Statewide requirements were collected from State Agencies, Departments and political subdivisions into a Request for Proposal (RFP) which was put out for competitive bid.

BNN: There are quite a few fuel contracts. Why is that?
Linda: There are contracts in place for most cities and towns in the State of Vermont as well as for schools and higher education. These contracts vary by region and for various fuel types and method of delivery required; tank service (small shuttle service) or wagon transport (large tractor trailers).

Recently the Office of Purchasing and Contracting (OPC) team and invited guests attended a Sustainable Purchasing workshop provided by Green Electronics Council (GEC). GEC is a mission-driven, non-profit established in 2006, that collaborates to achieve a world in which only sustainable IT products are designed, manufactured, and purchased. GEC manages the EPEAT flagship program, including ensuring the integrity of the EPEAT system.
What is Sustainable Purchasing? Sustainable Purchasing or Environmental Preferable Purchasing ( EPP ) is about buying products that are less harmful to the environment and safer for human health. It refers to the acquisition of products made from recycled content, bio-based, or energy and water efficient, that use alternate fuel and renewable energy or that offer alternatives to hazardous or toxic chemicals.
The State of Vermont has been a national leader in the development and application of Environmentally Preferable Purchasing and control of Hazardous Material Use. We have established specific goals and objectives aimed at:

  • providing sound environmental stewardship,
  • protection of human health,
  • reducing state operating expenses associated with the use and control of regulated hazardous materials,
  • reduction of potential liability attributable to environmental impact.
 
Therefore, where applicable the following environmental criteria is considered for state purchasing requirements and contracts. This workshop reinforced our continuous efforts to improve the procurement process with best practices for sustainable procurement.
