Hello!

I hope you are doing well. I've been quite busy with many new students. Time to catch up!

OPERATIVE WORDS
Just what are Operative Words? Operative Words are words or groups of words in a sentence that are emphasized over other words in order to highlight them in some manner.
When you are communicating, it is important to be able to get across to the listener an exact concept of what you are saying. What words you stress will give specific meaning to your message. We normally do this automatically when speaking on subjects we have an emotional feeling about.

Effective use of Operative Words creates interest for the listener. In public speaking and doing prepared speeches for school or acting auditions, knowing how to use Operative Words can make a huge difference in how the audience receives your communication.

Some good tips on finding Operative Words are to locate the adjectives and adverbs in a sentence. These, along with the words they are modifying, are often good to stress above other words. Some examples are, "He
ran down the road quickly," and, "The ribbon was bright blue." Stressing opposites are also effective, as in, "Was it good, or bad?

Use of changes in vocal pitch can also set Operative Words apart from other words you are saying. This would be low, regular pitch or higher pitch, without straining the voice.

Another factor to help with this can be done by stretching the vowels in the words and making the consonants clearer and stronger. One can strengthen the main syllable of a word, along with stretching the vowels. An example of this is the word, "unbelievable." This could be stated as, "un-be-LIEV-able!"

PRACTICE

It is good to practice stretching vowels and strengthening consonants, along with changing vocal pitch to get more familiar with these techniques. Taking any reading material you might have around the house (magazines and even cereal boxes) and reading aloud for a few minutes each day will help these techniques to become more natural and easier to do.

Ultimately, how and what you wish to communicate will determine which Operative Words to find and use.

Along with working with Foreign speakers, Actors and Public Speakers, I also work with children. It is a wonderful opportunity to work with young children who need extra help with forming words and help them gain command of speech.

As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or comments--I'm here to help!
