Newly Elected Board Members Take Office
The two newly elected Board of Education members took their oath of office on Monday, Jan. 7. The new members are Nancy Kratky (pictured right), representing subdistrict 6 and Kimara Snipe, representing subdistrict 8 (pictured left).

Board Officers Selected
The Board of Education elected Marque A. Snow as the Board of Education President and Dr. Shavonna L. Holman as Board of Education Vice President. They will serve in these roles for the 2019 calendar year.
#OPSProud Spotlight - Benson Student Honored as Outstanding Violinist
Steven Pruss, a senior at Benson High Magnet School, has made outstanding accomplishments as a violinist in the Omaha area. He has been a violinist with the Omaha Area Youth Orchestras since 2008. He is the concertmaster of the Youth Symphony, Omaha Public Schools, All-City Orchestra and the Benson Orchestra. In October of 2018, Steven performed as a violin soloist with the Omaha Symphony and has been in the top ten violins of the Nebraska All-State Orchestra since 2017. Steven also enjoys teaching and has the opportunity to coach younger violinists.  Outside of music, Steven is a member of the Benson JROTC. He’s also on the tennis, swim and track teams.  We salute Steven for his ambition and dedication.

Board of Education Action Items
School at 32nd and Burt Named - Gifford Park Elementary School
Kim Jones, principal of the school located at 32nd and Burt Streets gave a presentation on the school naming process that included incoming parents, incoming students, community members, principal, executive director and district representatives.

The Board approved the committee's recommendation of Gifford Park Elementary School. The colors will be green, black and gold. Their mascot will be the groundhog.

Schematic Design Approval - 2018 Bond Program - Burke High School Capital Improvement & Renovation Project
The Board of Education approved the Schematic Design of the renovations and capital improvements taking place at Burke High School. The project now moves into the design development phase.

Grant Fund Budget Adjustments
The Board approved the Grant Fund Adjustments. These are receipts and expenditures for programs or services that the district provides that are reimbursable through grant funds.

Important Information for OPS Staff
CHI Health and Omaha Public Schools partner to honor teachers across the OPS district
CHI Health wants nominations of Omaha Public School teachers changing the lives of students. Each month, they’ll surprise a Top Teacher nominee with a treat basket for the teacher's lounge and a gift card. CHI will draw winners on the last Friday of the month. CHI Health will select winners from three different grade levels across the district.
Anyone can nominate a Top Teacher at  CHIhealth.com/TopTeachers .
Next OPS Board of Education Meeting
The next regularly scheduled Board Meeting will take place on Jan. 23. It is tentatively scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.
