Chief Financial Officer Shane Rhian spoke to the Board about allocating Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) grant funds.
Funds were allocated in three distributions.
- ESSER I: $23.2 million
- Funds were used by September 2022
- ESSER II: $86.4 million
- Funds were used by September 2023
- ESSER III: $194.6 million
- Funds are to be used by September 2024
Our district has implemented a multi-layered approach to ensure we spend money according to the four outlined pillars:
- Pillar I – Academics
- Pillar II – Student & Staff Well-Being
- Pillar III – Infrastructure
- Pillar IV – Family & Community Engagement
All ESSER II funds were spent by Sept. 30, 2023 and have been submitted to the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) for reimbursement.
ESSER III required that 20% of funds be spent on academic recovery. Our district currently projects that we will spend more than 40% on academic recovery.
Our district staff is reviewing opportunities to reallocate the projected surplus of $8.18 million from ESSER III. The surplus comes from cost savings on previous projections. Staff will bring any budget amendments to the Board in spring 2024. Our district anticipates spending all funds by the Sept. 30, 2024 deadline.
