Staff Presentation on K-6 Special Education Reading Intervention and Related Resource Materials Adoption for Use Beginning with the 2022-2023 School Year
Staff began the process by reviewing submissions to an RFP and potential textbooks and resources. Materials were also available for review by teachers, our community, and the Superintendent Special Education Advisory Committee. Materials were then selected based on the feedback for field testing in classrooms throughout our district. Additional feedback was collected from staff and students following the field testing.
Curriculum and Instruction Support staff will now work with potential vendors on negotiated agreements for selected materials. Curriculum and Instruction Support staff recommend moving forward with School Specialty: Sounds Sensible & Specialized Program Individualizing Reading Excellence (S.P.I.R.E.). This was chosen because it offers a multi-sensory approach that aligns with our K-6 English language arts standards. It also offers a consistent 10-step lesson plan with explicit teacher-led instruction and comprehensive and consistent assessments.
The final recommendation and negotiated agreement with the selected vendors will come back before the Board for approval in the future.
